Basic Training Course for Troop Leaders Session No. 7/Handout THE BOY SCOUTS PROGRAM The program of the Boy Scouts Section is for boys from the age of 10 to 17 who join Scout Troops sponsored by the different institutions of society, be these government or non-government, civic or religious, professional or non-professional, profit or non-profit organizations. The following defines the concept, the objectives, and characteristics of the Program of the Boy Scout Section: 1. It is home, institution, community, and outdoor centered. 2. It is service-oriented. 3. The concepts of character development, citizenship training, and skills for self-reliance are value based and directed towards selfless service to others. 4. Activities are boy planned and boy implemented but with adult guidance, supervision, and direction. 5. Varied outdoor experiences and education for life through camping, hiking, community involvement and the like are pursued and earnestly implemented. 6. Teamwork is promoted through the system which develops the value of interdependence and provides practical opportunities for leadership training. The Ideals of the Boy Scout Section The Ideals of the Boy Scouts Section is the same as that of the Boy Scouts of the Philippines. The Scout Oath On My honor, I will do my best: To do my duty to God and my country, the Republic of the Philippines And to obey the Scout Law; To help other people at all times; To keep myself physically strong, mentally awake and morally straight.

BTC-TLs/S7-HO-The Boy Scout Program/page 2 The Scout Law A Scout is: Trustworthy Loyal Helpful Friendly Courteous Kind Obedient Cheerful Thrifty Brave Clean Reverent. The Scout Motto: Laging Handa Ang Batas ng Scout Ang Scout ay: Mapagkakatiwalaan Matapat Matulungin Mapagkaibigan Magalang Mabait Masunurin Masaya Matipid Matapang Malinis Maka-Diyos. Be Prepared The Scout Slogan: Gumawa ng Mabuti Araw-araw Do a Good Turn Daily Leadership in the Boy Scout Section The Adult Leader responsible for the effective implementation of the Program of the Boy Scout Section in a Boy Scout unit is called the Troop Leader. He is assisted in the performance of his responsibilities by two (2) Adult Leaders, the Assistant Troop Leader for Program and the Assistant Troop Leader for Administration. They, however, are not the functional leaders of the unit. Effectively, they are the ones that provide guidance and direction to the unit through boy leaders who are the real leaders of the Boy Scout Unit. These boys are elected by the Scouts and sits in what is called as the Troop Leaders Council. These are the Senior and the. The Troop Scribe, the Troop Quartermaster, and the Junior Assistant Troop Leader also sit with them. Organization of a Boy Scout Unit A Boy Scout Unit is called a Troop. It is composed of a maximum of thirty two (32) boys plus three (3), the Senior, the Troop Scribe and Treasurer, and the Troop Quartermaster. A Troop is divided into four (4) sub-units called s each headed by a s. A patrol has a minimum of six (6) and a maximum of eight (8) members. It is organized as follows:

BTC-TLs/S7-HO-The Boy Scout Program/page 3 1. 2. Assistant 3. 4. 5. Grubmaster 6. Quartermaster 7. Hikemaster 8. Cheer Leader Advancement Ranks in the Boy Scout Section When a boy registers as a member of a Boy Scout Troop, he starts with the rank of Tenderfoot. Then as he grows and develops along the advancement trails and passes the requirements, he is awarded the following ranks: 1. Second Class 2. First Class 3. Outdoorsman 4. Venturer, and the highest of them all 5. Eagle Scout Properly implemented, the Boy Scouts of the Philippines feels certain that the program of the Boy Scout Section wold have planted the seed of true citizenship, a citizenship anchored on age of 17. Least we be misled, however, let us bear in mind that the Program for the Boy Scout Section does not pretend to make leaders our of the Boys Scouts. It does not pretend to make successful Presidents, nor Governors, nor Mayors, nor Officers of the Armed Forces, nor Heads or Top Executives of a business enterprise. Rather, the program of the section provides a wide range of opportunities for developing the leadership potential to the fullest.an education for life A decisive first step would enable them to live a happier and a fuller life.
