AC JumpStart Application Guidelines What is AC JumpStart? AC JumpStart is an innovative incubation and mentorship program aimed at helping technology startups establish and grow their business in Southern Ontario. The Accelerator Centre (AC) will deliver this program over the next 4 years in partnership with Conestoga College, University of Waterloo, and Wilfrid Laurier University. Funding for this program was provided in January 2015 by the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario (FedDev Ontario). What is the mandate of AC JumpStart? Broaden the offering available to early-stage companies AC JumpStart companies will have the opportunity to benefit from the capabilities and services offered by all AC JumpStart partners. Increase mentorship hours and expertise AC JumpStart will increase the number of mentorship hours and the type of advisory expertise available to each company. Provide new seed funding for mission critical activities AC JumpStart will provide high-potential companies with an initial $30,000 in seed funding at a critical and formative stage of development. A select number of University of Waterloo AC JumpStart applicants will be eligible to receive matching capital from the University (eg. top University of Waterloo applicants may receive a total of $60,000 in seed funding). Expand the investor, customer and R&D partner networks available to companies Building on a proven model and leveraging strong regional partnerships and delivery capacity, the collaborative efforts of the AC, Conestoga College, University of Waterloo, and Wilfrid Laurier University will significantly increase access to potential customers, partners and investor connections. Why should I consider AC JumpStart for my startup? Access to funding and dedicated mentorship at the formative stage is a significant hurdle for startups. AC JumpStart addresses both of these challenges by providing essential seed funding and access to experts who can provide the critical guidance and mentorship geared to helping young companies realize their business goals. It is a formula that builds a foundation for commercial success. AC JumpStart will create a strong business foundation for participants and companies that consistently innovate, create new products, clients, jobs and economic value. Our goal: help create more market, customer and investment-ready firms in many sectors, enable these companies to achieve rapid traction and commercial impact, and drive their sustainable contribution to our regional economy. Access to Funding The program will provide seed funding to each AC JumpStart company to support eligible*, mission critical activities during the formative stage of development. This investment will be matched in cash by all recipient firms as required by FedDev Ontario. Specifically: The Accelerator Centre will allocate $30,000 in seed funding for each AC JumpStart company emerging from the AC. Conestoga s Centre for Entrepreneurship will allocate $30,000 in seed funding to each AC JumpStart company emerging from Conestoga College. University of Waterloo will provide the required $30,000 in matching seed funding to a select number of top AC JumpStart companies led by a University of Waterloo student or graduate (ie. total funding combined would be $60,000 consisting of $30,000 from FedDev Ontario and $30,000 from the university with no cash match required by the applicant). Laurier LaunchPad (Wilfrid Laurier University) will allocate $30,000 in seed funding to each AC JumpStart company led by a student or graduate from Wilfrid Laurier University, and provide access to mentors who contribute to the LaunchPad Program. *See further eligibility requirements on page 3 Dedicated Mentorship The AC has developed an internationally-recognized mentorship program for startup technology businesses and their founders. AC JumpStart recipients will receive up to $10,000 of in-kind mentorship services for 12 months from world class mentors in the following disciplines: Sales & Marketing Public Relations & Communication Technology and Product Development Finance AC JumpStart Application Guidelines Jan 2015 Page 2

Human Resources, Leadership & Culture Market Research and Validation AC JumpStart will provide companies access to the market research and analysis expertise of the Canadian Innovation Centre (CIC). Each company will have the opportunity to receive a CIC Market Validation Evaluation Study. The study will examine the proposed innovation from three perspectives technology impact, business proposition and market dynamics. The assessment will feature a high-level overview of: customer requirements, the company s proposed service model, market growth rate and trends, and key competition. CIC may also address patent reviews and licensing opportunities at a high-level. Linkages to Prospective Investors and Customers AC JumpStart will broker linkages between companies, and prospective customers, investors and R&D partners. Each participating company will have the opportunity to tap into the broad and collective regional, national and international networks established by all partners. Potential for Incubation at the Accelerator Centre Participants in the AC JumpStart program may also qualify for acceptance into one of the Accelerator Centre s additional programs. If accepted, applicants will receive increased mentorship support, turnkey workspace, and access to networking and educational events.
