UNTERLAGE FÜR SCHÜLERINNEN STAGES OF A QUEEN S LIFE QUEEN ELIZABETH II OF ENGLAND A After the end of the war, Elizabeth attended public functions and travelled a lot throughout the British Isles. She accompanied her parents and sister on overseas tours. Elizabeth married Lieutenant Philip Mountbatten, now Prince Philip, The Duke of Edinburgh. The Royal couple had four children (and later seven grandchildren). B She never fully recovered from her husband s loss he died of typhoid and she remained in mourning [Trauer] for the rest of her life. Among the great achievements of her reign was probably the expansion of the British Empire, which doubled in size, taking in India, Australia, Canada and parts of Africa and the South Pacific. Foto: Buckingham Palace Press Office C Princess Elizabeth was born in London on 21 April 1926. Her father was King George VI and her mother was Queen Elizabeth. She grew up at the Royal Lodge in Windsor, her parents country home near London. The princess also spent much time at the country homes of her grandparents, King George V and Queen Mary. Princess Elizabeth was educated at home with Princess Margaret, her younger sister. Later she studied constitutional history, law, art and music. D Only five years after her marriage, Elizabeth received the news of the death of her father, King George VI, during a journey to Kenia. A year after her father s death her coronation [Krönung] took place in Westminster Abbey. As the Queen of England, Elizabeth became head of the Navy, Army and Air Force of Britain. The Queen maintains close contact with the Prime Minister and the government. E Mr Melbourne, the Prime Minister, aged 58 and a widower [Witwer] who had lost his only daughter, viewed her as his own child, and encouraged in her a conservative approach [konservative Haltung] to her task of ruling Britain. He was also concerned for her personal well-being. 148

UNTERLAGE FÜR SCHÜLERINNEN F That was the time when she learned to ride (she has been a horsewoman ever since) and enjoyed her hobbies like amateur theatre and swimming. As the Princess grew older she began to take part in public life and carried out her first public engagements [Verpflichtungen], particularly with children s matters. Shortly after her 18th birthday, Elizabeth took over some of the duties of a Head of State during the King s absence. G One of the recent events was when Prince Charles married his long-time lover Mrs Camilla Parker-Bowles. In the near future Elizabeth is going to celebrate her 80th birthday. The Queen continues to carry out her official duties after over 50 years on the Throne, including travelling to foreign countries, hosting receptions and attending public ceremonies. H She receives all Cabinet papers and daily summaries of events in Parliament. The Queen is patron or president of over 700 organisations. With her husband Prince Philip she undertook innumerable visit tours to foreign countries. Each year she undertakes a large number of engagements, for example some 478 (!) in 2003. I Beside her public duties, Her Majesty entertains some 48,000 people at Royal Garden Parties and other occasions every year. She also appears at many festivals and ceremonies. A few years ago she celebrated her golden wedding anniversary which was a memorable royal event. Adapted from the British Monarchy web site, 1997-2005, Buckingham Palace Press Office. 149
