There is no parallel teaching in this course. 2.3 Summary of Course The course provides you with an introduction to the concepts, techniques and technologies relevant for creating and managing business databases. Databases are major components of information systems. Information systems require databases to capture, transmit, store, retrieve, manipulate and display information used in business processes. Databases are of critical importance in virtually every industry sector. The course provides foundational knowledge on business databases. The knowledge and skills that you will learn in this course are foundational for many advanced courses and are essential for you if you intended to work with business analysts, systems analysts, system developers, software developers or system engineers (or take on such positions yourself). 2.4 Course Aims and Relationship to Other Courses This course is a core first year course in the information systems curricula offered by the School of Information Systems, Technology and Management. The course does not have any prerequisite courses. The course itself is a prerequisite for INFS2603 Business Systems Analysis, INFS2609 System Delivery and Implementation and INFS3608 Data and Information Management. The course aims to give you the background of, and a process for, database development. Furthermore, the course aims to develop your conceptual and logical database design skills. Finally, the course aims to develop your skills in using and managing databases. You will practice self-directed work in groups that will help you to develop your interpersonal communication, project management and quality assurance skills. 2.5 Student Learning Outcomes The course aims at the following Course Learning Outcomes, which are the qualities, skills and understandings we want you to have on successful completion of this course: INFS1603 Business Databases 4

Course Learning Outcomes On successful completion of the course, you should be able to: 1. Discuss the role and function of databases in information systems (IS). 2. Discuss the relation between database and IS development processes. 3. Apply conceptual database modelling methods (e.g., ER modelling). 4. Apply normalisation techniques to database schema. 5. Design a small size database system. 6. Use the SQL language to create and use databases (e.g., in Oracle). 7. Prepare a technical report in writing. Present the technical report orally. 8. Work professionally in a project team. 9. Explain the roles of database administrators (DBAs) in organizations. 10. Discuss privacy and ethical issues of database systems. Exam 5b Social and cultural awareness (Not a focus of this course) 3 LEARNING AND TEACHING ACTIVITIES 3.1 Approach to Learning and Teaching in the Course The lecture and the lab aim to provide you with a chance to learn fundamental database knowledge and skills. There will be several course activities to foster your critical thinking, develop your basic problem-solving strategies, facilitate your acquisition of life-long learning skills and prepare you to work effectively in the information economy. We provide practical assistance through PASS leaders and lab instructors (facilitating hands-on exercises in the labs) to you. However, you need to take the initiative to self-learn the practical components throughout the course. Learning is not achieved through attending formal lectures and labs, but is nearly exclusively achieved through self-initiated learning. Formal lectures, labs and the textbook can only provide the context, structure and resources for your learning. You will find that your own practical engagement with the material in self-study or in group works as well as informal communications with your peers is the crucial elements of your learning. The major assignment is a group project, reflecting how real-life commercial systems are built. In this course, we will use Chen s entity relationship (ER) notation (other notations are not acceptable in the assignment and the exam) and the Oracle SQL query language (other notations are not acceptable in the assignment and the exam). 3.2 Learning Activities and Teaching Strategies There are several components contributing to the learning in this course: lectures, labs, selfstudy, exercises, assignments, and PASS Leader classes. You are required to attend the lecture (two hours) and one Oracle lab (one hour). The lecture focuses on conceptually creating databases. You will learn the conceptual background and analytical techniques relevant for ER and database design. The lecture notes also include exercises that you can solve in class or at home. The exercises provide an opportunity to test your knowledge and understanding. There will continuous opportunities to ask questions and actively participate in class. The labs focus on using and managing database. You will become familiar with Oracle as a main database tool. The Oracle labs are interactive, collaborative sessions in which students hands-on apply the concepts of the lecture. You will learn essential SQL skills, which will allow you to write queries against single and multiple tables, manipulate data in tables, create database objects, use the dictionary views to retrieve metadata and create reports about schema objects. You also learn some of the date-time functions available in Oracle. The Oracle lab instructors are responsible for all laboratory sessions and your database design project. You should always refer to your lab instructor first with problems regarding the laboratory or the database design project. As above, self-study forms the major part of your learning. Especially, you will need to work in groups on your assignments, read the lecture notes, lab manual, textbook sections relevant for each week, solve the lecture and lab exercises and work with Oracle SQL Developer (on campus or at home). You should also familiarize yourself with a tool of your choice for graphically representing your ER designs (one common tool is Visio). 4 ASSESSMENT 4.1 Formal Requirements To receive a pass grade in this course, you must meet all of the following criteria: Attain an overall mark of at least 50%. Attend at least 80% of all classes. Attain a satisfactory performance in each component of the course. A mark of 45% or higher is normally regarded as satisfactory. Attain a mark of at least 45% in the final exam. Lab Exercises 5% Weekly Final Exam 60% 2 hours Exam period 4.3 Assessment Component: Lab Exercises You need to complete the weekly lab exercises at home and show you solutions to your lab instructor. The lab exercises support the development of skills required for part B of the assignment. A manual for completing weekly lab exercises will be provided in the labs (as a complement to the textbook). Note that late submissions are not accepted and there is no special consideration for this assessment component. 4.4 Assessment Component: Assignment A + B You need so solve the assignment in a group of students. The assignment involves the design and the implementation of a database. The assignment consists of two parts: Part A includes entity relationship diagram, relational model and data dictionary. Part B includes the actual database implementation (in Oracle) and an oral presentation. The assignment provides an opportunity for you to experience teamwork in a practical database design and implementation project scenario. Your skills in written communication will be evaluated through your project report. Your skills in oral communication will be evaluated through your group presentation. You will need to learn Oracle for the group assignment. Marks from the assignment might be adjusted based on peer assessment/peer marking. The assignment requirements document will be available on the course website. The LIC will provide further advice on the assignment in the lecture. INFS1603 Business Databases 9

4.5 Assessment Component: Quiz A + B You need to participate in two quizzes during regular class times. These quizzes are short, formal tests of your knowledge and skills. Quiz A will be on ER modelling and normalization (in the lecture). Quiz B will be on SQL (in the lab). For administrative purposes, you can attend quiz B only in the lab that you are enrolled in. Quiz A and B are marked automatically/electronically. Note that late submissions are not accepted and there is no special consideration for quiz A+B. However, if you have illness or misadventure reasons to have missed a quiz, the above satisfactory performance rule will not be applied to that quiz. 4.6 Assessment Component: Exam You need to participate in the final exam in the examination period. This is a formal, closed book examination of your knowledge and skills. All material covered in lectures, labs, assignments and readings are examinable. You will be asked to both discuss and apply the concepts explained in those sources. Your ability to clearly and coherently frame your answers will be part of the evaluation. You must plan on being available for the full examination period to attend the final exam. In addition, you should also ensure that you would be available for a supplementary examination in the event of illness or misadventure. The LIC will provide further advice on the exam in the lecture. 4.7 Assessment Format Assignments need to be submitted in the standard UNSW format. Especially, the assignment needs to including the signed UNSW standard assignment cover sheet. Further details will be provided in the assignment specifications document. 4.8 Assignment Submission Procedure Assignments need to be submitted as a PDF soft copy online and as a hard copy on the due day (both with signed UNSW cover sheet). Assignments will be screened with plagiarismdetecting software. The submission of non-original materials will be considered plagiarism and will be pursued. 4.9 Late Submission Late submission of an assignment is not desirable, disrupt the course timelines, and are a sign of poor time management. Assignments are to be submitted on or better before the due date. The late submission of assignments carries a penalty of 10% of the awarded marks for that assignment per day of lateness (including weekends and public holidays). For example, a 70 marking would be reduced by 7 marks per day of lateness. An extension of time to complete an assignment may be granted by the LIC in case of illness or misadventure. Applications for an extension need to be made to and approved by the LIC by INFS1603 Business Databases 10

email or in person before the due date. You will be need to sent appropriate evidence such as medical certificates, accident reports etc. with your application. Please note that workload, work commitments and computer failures are usually considered insufficient grounds for an extension. For group assignments only: groups are expected to plan ahead and to being able to balance out a missing member without an extension. An extension is unlikely to be granted for groups. All applications for special consideration (for assignments, attendance or the final exam) must be made following the guidelines in the UNSW A-Z Student Guide. Quality Assurance The ASB is actively monitoring student learning and quality of the student experience in all its programs. A random selection of completed assessment tasks may be used for quality assurance, such as to determine the extent to which program learning goals are being achieved. The information is required for accreditation purposes, and aggregated findings will be used to inform changes aimed at improving the quality of ASB programs.
