Program objectives Support excellent post-doctoral fellows to prepare for careers in a broad spectrum of health research and research user roles. In the researcher role, advance knowledge In the research user role, increase evidence-informed decisionmaking related to health and the health system Successful applicants receive a competitive stipend award to protect research time for a maximum of three years: Post-PhD, or Post-health professional degree 5
Program highlights 70 percent of total funding allocated to the four research themes (biomedical, clinical, health services, population health) 30 percent of total funding allocated to clinical, health services, and population health research themes to build capacity in these areas Knowledge translation is an essential component of the research project 6
Eligibility requirements Open to Canadian citizens, permanent residents, and foreign nationals Not have held a PhD degree for more than five years or have been a health professional in active clinical service for more than 10 years for the duration of the MSFHR award Apply for at least one year of support Hold or be eligible to hold a post-doctoral fellowship position by award start date and for the duration of the award 7
Eligibility requirements Not have held a previous MSFHR post-doctoral fellowship award As a PhD, commit at least 75 percent time to research training As a health professional in active clinical service, commit at least 50 percent time to research training Supervisor(s) must be an established researcher with an academic appointment with a BC university Research project must have clear link to human health 8
Award term and amount Award consists of a taxable stipend and a research/travel allowance Years since degree Stipend Research/ travel allowance < 3 (0-36 months) $37,000 $4,500 3 5 (37 60 months) $42,000 $4,500 > 5 10 (61 120 months) $47,000 $4,500 The maximum period of support is three years Top-up and/or incentive funding available for successful applicants receiving external stipend awards Start date may be deferred up to 12 months; deferral may affect award term 9
Top-up and incentive funding Available for MSFHR post-doctoral fellows who hold other external stipend and research and travel awards: An external award is one that: Is external to BC Is granted through an open competition Is peer-reviewed Is 50 percent or more in value than the MSFHR award 10
Knowledge translation (KT) MSFHR encourages applicants across all research themes to include appropriate KT activities. KT may be included in research projects in one of two ways: 1. As components of a research project (the practice of KT) 2. As the focus of the project (KT science) 11
KT is about making a difference KT activities include: Traditional dissemination activities such as publications and presentations OR Non-traditional development and implementation of toolkits; educational sessions with patients, practitioners, or policy makers; media engagement KT science explores the theories, mechanisms, concepts and/or methods by which evidence is used in healthcare practice and policy. 12
Partnership awards MSFHR partners with leading organizations to build capacity and fill strategic gaps in health research in BC. Applying for a partnered award in no way affects your chances of receiving a regular award. Process: Link within the competition guidelines will take you to the Partnership section on MSFHR website Follow the instructions for registering your interest for a partnered award by completing the partnership form Only those applications that receive a MSFHR peer review rating of 3.8 or above will be considered Partners make the final decision based on relevance to their mandate 13
Evaluation process Review panel members meet face-to-face to evaluate applications from the four research themes Expertise of the primary and secondary reviewers is matched to the research project Three principles of the evaluation process: confidentiality, impartiality and parity Strict compliance of MSFHR conflict of interest guidelines 14
Evaluation criteria Each application will be evaluated against the criteria in the following categories: Research project Training environment Research activities and related research achievements Career development References Reviewers will assess KT activities as part of the research project. Note: If the research project is fully focused on KT science, it will be evaluated against specific KT science criteria. 15
Notes Be aware of the internal deadlines and application process at your host institution Communicate with your supervisor(s) and referees well in advance of your host institution internal deadline Supervisor(s) and referees must have an MSFHR ApplyNet account to upload their forms and letters Make sure you have the exact email addresses of your supervisor(s) and referees that they used to create their accounts in MSFHR ApplyNet Refer to the Research Trainee Instructions document when completing your online application 16
