Friends Life Protection Account Critical Illness Cover Guide Taking care of tomorrow

Critical Illness Cover Taking care of tomorrow Friends Life Critical Illness Cover is here for you through whichever route life takes. We offer comprehensive cover that s designed to support you and your needs. Covering what matters We recognise how vital it is for you to have comprehensive protection arrangements in place covering you for the most likely events. That s why our Critical Illness Cover includes protection for the most common critical illnesses: Heart Attack, Stroke, Cancer and Multiple Sclerosis (MS). In fact, nearly 80% of all our critical illness claims are paid out for one of these conditions*. Comprehensive Cover We cover 38 individual conditions that you will find listed on the table in this guide. Our cover for these conditions gives you the peace of mind to know that if you suffer a specified critical illness, you ll have some financial support in place to be able to concentrate on getting better. More than the industry standard Our Critical Illness Cover not only meets the required levels set by the Association of British Insurers (ABI), but in many cases exceeds them. For 10 of our critical illnesses we go beyond the industry standard, offering you added protection. Heart Attack Stroke Benign Brain Tumour Coma Coronary Artery Bypass Grafts Heart Valve Replacement or Repair Paralysis of Limb Loss of Hand or Foot Third Degree Burns Aorta Graft Surgery This improved quality of cover is known as ABI+, and you ll find more detail on these 10 conditions inside. Added value with additional covers Our Critical Illness Cover offers a wide range of additional covers. Each of these covers offers you an additional payment without affecting the amount of cover: Low-grade Prostate Cancer Cover Total Mastectomy Cover Children s Cover Accident Hospitalisation Cover. Other additional covers include Major Heart Surgery Cover and Terminal Illness Cover that provide an advance payment of all or part of your amount of cover when you need it most. These are designed to give you added protection where it matters. For example, Prostate Cancer is responsible for almost 25% of newly diagnosed cases of cancer every year**. You ll find more details on these covers inside. * Protection Account Claims Department 2009 ** Office for National Statistics; Incidence of the major cancers, 2007.

Our additional covers explained We give you more cover than you may expect by including the following additional covers that offer a one-off payment, without affecting the amount of cover. Total Mastectomy Cover If you are diagnosed with a carcinoma in-situ of the breast that is treated by total removal of the breast (a total mastectomy) we will pay either 20% of the amount of cover or 15,000 (whichever is lower). Accident Hospitalisation Cover If you are immediately admitted to hospital with a severe physical injury as a result of an accident and need to stay there for 28 consecutive days, we will pay either 20% of the amount of cover or 50,000 (whichever is lower). We recognise that certain circumstances require specific financial support. That s why we offer advance payments of your amount of cover for certain situations. Low-grade Prostate Cancer Cover If you are diagnosed with low-grade prostate cancer that results in treatment either by complete removal of the prostate, external beam or interstitial implant radiotherapy, we will pay either 20% of the amount of cover or 15,000 (whichever is lower). Children s Cover To give you and your family extra protection we include Critical Illness Cover for your children (both natural and adopted). You can make claims for up to four eligible children aged between 30 days and 18 years, or 21 years and in full-time education, on diagnosis of a specified critical illness. We will pay up to 50% of the amount of cover or 25,000 (whichever is lower) for each claim. Only one claim can be made per child. Where an eligible child is covered under more than one Account because of a different person covered, a claim for Children s Cover can be made within each Account, up to 25,000 per Account. The overall maximum amount claimed per eligible child cannot exceed 50,000, regardless of the number of Accounts held. For full details on our Critical Illness Cover please refer to our Key Features Document and Critical Illness Guide which are available on request from your financial adviser Major Heart Surgery Cover We will make an advance payment of all or part of your amount of cover to pay for private major heart surgery for the following procedures: Aorta Graft Surgery Heart Valve Replacement Coronary Artery Bypass Graft We pay the benefit directly to the hospital where the surgery is taking place to ensure treatment as early as possible. If we do not pay out your full amount of cover the remaining amount will be made available once surgery has taken place. You need to be on an NHS-approved waiting list to qualify. This cover also applies to eligible children. Terminal Illness Cover If you are diagnosed with a terminal illness that is expected to lead to death within 12 months and before the cover ends, we will make a payment of the total amount of cover. Once paid, the cover will then end. This applies whether one or two persons are covered. Your monthly payments We believe you should only pay for the cover you receive. If we are unable to cover you for Cancer or Multiple Sclerosis (MS), we will reduce your payments to us when these are removed from your cover.

Our ABI+ definitions explained We go above and beyond the industry standard, offering you more comprehensive cover where it matters most. Heart Attack standard requirement for you to experience the typical chest pains associated with a Heart Attack. Heart Attacks are one of the most claimed-for critical illnesses and cases without chest pain are a real occurrence, most likely contributing to the 124,000 cases of Heart Attack every year*. This is why we have decided to cover you for this. Stroke standard exclusion for strokes caused by injury to brain tissue or blood vessels. We recognise that this type of injury can lead to stroke and believe you should be covered if it does. Aorta Graft Surgery We ve expanded our condition on Aorta Graft Surgery, moving away from the industry standard to include surgery for trauma as well as disease. We feel that any surgery to repair your heart is serious and should be covered. This is why we have decided to cover you for this. Heart Valve Replacement or Repair standard for these procedures to be completed through surgery with division of the breastbone. Medical advancements mean some of these operations are now completed through key-hole surgery. We reflect this in your policy giving you the financial support you need after such an operation. Coronary Artery Bypass Grafts Similarly we ve removed the industry standard for procedures to address narrowing of the arteries to be completed through surgery with division of the breastbone. Again because this is a serious operation, we believe you should have the financial support you need. Benign Brain Tumour We now do more than the industry standard and will cover you following surgery to remove a brain tumour. We recognise that undergoing brain surgery is in itself a significant medical procedure, so will now pay a claim on this alone. Coma standard requirement of a continuous 96 hour comatose state from our coma definition. We recognise being in a coma on life support for any amount of time is likely to cause permanent neurological deficit with persisting clinical symptoms that have a big impact on a person s life. Third Degree Burns We ve expanded our condition regarding third degree burns, moving away from the industry standard, to improve our coverage for burns to the head, neck and face. We recognise the serious psychological impact of burns to these areas so will now offer a payout for burns covering 30% of the head and neck or 50% of the face. Loss of Hand or Foot standard requirement for the loss of two hands or feet for a payout on this condition. Losing one hand or foot will now qualify for a full payout of your amount of cover. Paralysis of Limb Similarly we ve removed the industry standard requirement for the paralysis of two limbs for a payout on this condition. Again, paralysis of any limb qualifies for full payout of your amount of cover. * British Heart Foundation 2010

We recognise that life can be unpredictable, that s why we ve designed our Critical Illness Cover to include a wide range of features and additional covers ensuring you have the protection you need now and in the future. Parents with children at home Being a parent is a time of greater financial responsibility. Our Critical Illness Cover can help should you or your children suffer a critical illness, and unlike any other insurer, we will cover your children to age 21 if they re still in full-time education. Our additional covers really add value, offering a payment should you have a Total Mastectomy or treatment for Prostate Cancer. Our Children s Cover completes our package of covers offering increased protection for the whole family without reducing your amount of cover. Older people without children at home As you get older your financial responsibilities will change. This, combined with a greater risk of ill health, means more emphasis should be placed on your protection needs. Unlike some insurers, we don t have age restrictions on any illnesses we cover, so you re still covered as you get older. As you progress through life the flexibility of our Guaranteed Options come into play. These allow you to adjust your amount of cover without the need for further underwriting, taking into account your changing protection needs, for example, getting married, having a baby or purchasing a house. For increases in the amount of cover, the new cover is set up on the terms and conditions in place at the time of the change. For an extension to the term of cover, the change will use the existing terms and conditions of the cover. Critical Illness Cover gives a one off payment if you are diagnosed with one of 38 critical illnesses. It pays out when you live for 14 days after diagnosis, or have a terminal illness expected to cause death within 12 months and before the Cover ends. The one off payment will be equal to the amount of cover and is payable only once, on diagnosis of a critical or terminal illness. The cover will then end. This applies whether one or two persons are covered. You must be aged 18 to 64 to take out this Cover and it must end before you turn 70. We only cover the illnesses listed. Some forms of illness such as certain types of cancer are not covered. Full details of every illness we cover are in our Critical Illness Guide, available from your financial adviser.
