Initial Enrollment Period Knowing when to sign up for Medicare can be a challenge if you want your health care coverage to continue seamlessly. Use the chart below to help understand when you can start looking for coverage and when your coverage will start. your birthday month If you sign up during this month...... your coverage will start this month No Medicare coverage three months prior each brick equals one month Signing up during the months before you turn 65 can help you avoid a delay in coverage. To get Part A or Part B the month you turn 65 you must sign up during these months. General Medicare Enrollment Period If you do not sign up during your Initial Enrollment Period, you can sign up between Jan. 1 March 31 each year. Coverage for signing up during this period will begin July 1. Special Enrollment Periods You will have the opportunity to sign up for Medicare outside of the General Enrollment Period during two different time frames. 1. You can sign up any time if you have a group health plan through your current employment either by your employer or a union. * 2. When your employment ends you have eight months after you stop working to sign up for Medicare Part A or B. * Note: COBRA and retiree health plans are not considered coverage on current employment and mean you are not eligible for a Special Enrollment Period.

What types of plans are available? Medicare does not cover or pay for everything when it comes to medical expenses. Medicare Supplement, or Medigap Plans, help close the gaps in your coverage for expenses Medicare approves but does not cover. Each of the different Medicare supplement plans can help close the gap depending on your situation. One benefit of Avera Health Plans Medicare Supplement plans is that you can switch or cancel your plan at any time. You don t have to wait for an enrollment period. Medicare Advantage Plan, often called Part C, is a type of Medicare health plan offered by a private company that contracts with Medicare to provide you with your Part A and Part B benefits. You may pay a monthly plan premium, which varies based on the type of plan, coverage and company you choose. There are often co-pays and out-of-pocket expenses associated with Medicare Advantage plans. You can enroll with Medicare Advantage plans Oct. 15 Dec. 7. The disenrollment period is Jan. 1 Feb. 14.
