MICROSOFT WINDOWS BACKUP This manual explains how to backup and restore the system information contained in Windows NT, Windows 2000 and Windows XP servers, such as the Primary Domain Controller, using the Arkeia plug-in for Windows. An Arkeia plug-in is an optional component, which can be used with both Arkeia Network Backup and Arkeia Server Backup to make a specific task easier to do, or to add some functionality to Arkeia. The system information that can be backed-up and restored by this plug-in can be divided into four distinct parts: 1. The Windows Registry. 2. The Windows Active Directory (Windows 2000/XP only). 3. The Windows Certificates (Windows 2000/XP only). 4. The Windows Event Logs.! Backing up and restoring the system information of a Windows server is a complicated task. Before attempting any operation with Arkeia, its Windows client and the sysinfo plug-in, you should be thoroughly familiar with the procedures in this instruction. An error or missed step may result in severe data loss or damage to the Windows operating system! The Windows Registry, Active Directory and Certificates backup and restore operations are supported only by Arkeia 5.0.7 and higher. If you have a version of Arkeia 5 earlier than v5.0.6, you should upgrade to Arkeia 5.0.7 or later, to use these functions. Installation The Arkeia Windows plug-in is installed automatically with every copy of the Windows client. Therefore, no special procedure is needed to install and use the specialized Windows plug-in. The use of the plug-in requires a valid license for your Windows clients. If you do not have a valid Arkeia license for your Windows client computers, your Arkeia 5 server will not be able to connect and or backup the data present on them. Arkeia Plugin for MS Windows 9

Backup the Registry through the sysinfo plug-in To backup the Registry of a Windows computer through the standard sysinfo plugin of Arkeia, follow the steps outlined below. At the Main menu, click on Backup >Savepacks > new to reach the Create Savepack menu. Enter a name for the Savepack of the system information, and press the Enter key (or click on the OK button) to create the Savepack and return to the main Savepack list. Select the new Savepack in the Savepack list and click on Browse Trees. This will display a list of all clients registered on the Arkeia server. Double-click on the Windows client you want to backup. This displays the list of plug-in available on the client, as can be seen in the screenshot below. Then, click on the sysinfo/ plug-in. The following screen will be displayed. To backup the Windows Registry with Arkeia, click on the registry file. Once this is done, right-click anywhere in the list of plug-in and click on Validate in the pop-up menu. 10 Arkeia Plugin for MS Windows

The operation described above selects the Registry for backup in a Savepack. The next time the Savepack is chosen as the target of a backup operation (Interactive or Periodic backup), the content of the Registry of the Windows client will be saved to tape by the Arkeia server, along with all the other files and directories selected for backup. When displayed, the tree path of the registry should be: computer_name.domain.tld!sysinfo:/registry. For instance, if three Windows computers are available, named: paris, madrid and berlin in a company named acme.com, the following trees are correct: paris.acme.com!sysinfo:/registry madrid.acme.com!sysinfo:/registry berlin.acme.com!sysinfo:/registry If a backup contains both the Windows Registry and the Active Directory, the restoration should always start with the Active Directory and finish with the Registry. Please see below, the section titled Restoring the Active Directory with the sysinfo plug-in on page 13, for more information on the restoration of the Active Directory. Backup of the Windows Active directory The backup of the Windows Active Directory is managed in the same way as the backup of the Windows Registry. The only change is the name of the tree itself in the sysinfo plug-in, which is activedir/. Therefore, to backup the Active Directory of a Windows computer, use the same procedure described above for the backup of the Windows Registry, but, within the sysinfo structure, select the activedir/ directory instead. For instance, the following tree path would be a correct one to backup the Active Directory of the Windows computer named foobar, within the domain named acme.com: london.acme.com!sysinfo:/activedir The procedure for backing up the Active Directory is, internally, slightly more complicated than the backup of the Registry, as Arkeia connects to the Active Directory service, and saves the database and the transaction logs into the directory: $ARKEIA_DIR/tmpreg/arkeia_activedir Where $ARKEIA_DIR is the directory in which the Arkeia client has been installed. Once the database has been correctly saved to the temporary directory, the Arkeia Windows client will prepare the Active Directory data and send it to the Arkeia server, where it will be saved to tape.! Since the Arkeia Windows client will use a local directory to store the data to be backed-up before sending it to the Arkeia client, the Arkeia Plugin for MS Windows 11

local hard disk should have enough free space available to store a complete copy of the Active Directory database and logs. To check this, verify the size of the directory named winnt/ntds, which contains the Active Directory database (named ntds.dit) and its logs (named edb*.log). Backup of the Certificates through the sysinfo plug-in The backup of the Windows Certificates is done by Arkeia, through its sysinfo plug-in. The procedure to select the Windows Certificates is the same as the one detailed above for the Windows Registry, except that the directory to be selected within the sysinfo/ directory is certificateserver/.! The directory certificateserver/ will only appear in the tree structure of the sysinfo/ plug-in if the service named Certificate Server (which is controlled by the binary named certsrv.exe) has been launched. If this entry does not appear while browsing the sysinfo/ structure, make sure the corresponding service is launched. Arkeia can perform the backup of the Certificates only if the Certificates service is running. Arkeia does not backup the private keys of the Certificates service. However, it is possible to save these keys, by using the Windows command certutil to create an Object backup within Arkeia. The Windows help files detail the syntax of the certutil command. For more information on the Object backup of Arkeia, please refer to the Arkeia User Manual. To check if the Certificates service is running on your Windows 2000 or Windows XP server, use the Services MMC snap in, by clicking on Start > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services. Backup of the Event Logs through the sysinfo plug-in The Windows Event Logs can be backed-up by an Arkeia v5 server by using the sysinfo/ plug-in, in the manner described above for the Windows Registry. To backup the Windows Event Logs, the system administrator who is creating the Savepack should select the eventlog/ entry in the Arkeia Navigator. Like the other Windows information, the Windows Event Logs are saved to a temporary directory, on the hard disk of the Windows Arkeia client, before being sent to the Arkeia server. This temporary directory is named: $ARKEIA_DIR/tmpreg/arkeia_eventlog_backup Sufficient disk space should therefore be available to keep this temporary copy of the Windows Event Logs. For more information, please refer to the previous section of this appendix. 12 Arkeia Plugin for MS Windows

Restoration of the Windows system information Restoring the Windows Registry with the sysinfo plug-in Restoring the Windows Registry information can be done by selecting the correct, original path, within the Restoration screen. To do this, use either the Navigator function or the Search file function. Once the correct backup has been selected, launch the Restoration from the Arkeia Server to the Arkeia Windows Client. For more information on the Restoration functions of Arkeia, see Chapter 9:Data restoration on page 131. Restoring the Active Directory with the sysinfo plug-in To restore the Active Directory backed up by Arkeia : 1. Restart the Windows computer in Directory Services Restore mode. This reboot mode is available by pressing the F8 key during the reboot of the computer. Arkeia will NOT restore the Active Directory if this service is running. While the Active Directory service is off-line, the authentications are still performed locally, through the SAM database of the Windows Registry. Never restore the Registry database while restoring the Active Directory, or before rebooting the computer hosting the Active Directory service. The restoration of the Active Directory should always be performed before the restoration of the Registry, and the Active Directory should be completed, and the server rebooted, BEFORE restoring the Registry.! After the Restoration has been completed by Arkeia, the computer hosting the Active Directory service should be immediately rebooted in normal mode. When the computer has completed its reboot, the Active Directory should detect the restoration and start a recovery process. During this recovery process, it will check the internal structure of the Active Directory database and add the different logs. If the Windows NT/XP/2000 server restarts normally, the restoration has been successful.! The Restoration process, like the backup is a two-step procedure and will create a copy of the Active Directory files on the local hard disk drive. Please make sure there is enough free space on the drive to hold a complete copy of the Active Directory database and logs before attempting a restoration. Restoring the Certificates with the sysinfo/ plug-in. The Windows Certificates should be restored while the Certificates service itself is off-line. To do this, click on Start > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services and use the MMC snap-in to list the services and stop the Windows Certificates service. If the Certificates service is not stopped when the restoration is launched, Arkeia will refuse to restore the data to the Windows client. Arkeia Plugin for MS Windows 13

The restoration of the Windows Certificates may require a large amount of disk space to be available on the Windows client computer. Please make sure there is enough free disk space on the client before attempting to launch the operation. When the restoration has been completed, the Certificates service can be restarted through the Microsoft Management Console by using the procedure detailed above. The Certificates service will recover the data from its restored database. Once this recovery is completed, a new Certificates backup should be performed immediately, as the recovery process itself may modify a lot of information within the Certificates log. Restoring the Event Logs with the sysinfo/ plug-in The Windows Event Logs can be restored to the Windows client of Arkeia without any special manipulation, simply by selecting the correct files in the Restoration Navigator of Arkeia (see above for more information). The files are restored to the temporary directory used for the backup (see above for more details). However, the Windows Event Logs, once they have been restored to the Windows client, should be specifically opened within the Windows Event Viewer, in order to be displayed. Otherwise, the Windows Event Viewer will only open the standard Windows log files and NOT the restored files. To open the restored Windows Event Logs, open the files ending with the extension.evt in the directory named: $ARKEIA_DIR/tmpreg/arkeia_eventlog_backup Replace $ARKEIA_DIR with the name of the directory that contains the Arkeia Windows client. 14 Arkeia Plugin for MS Windows
