5. Validation types of SSL certificates What s a validation and what s its goal? The activity performed by Certification Authorities aims at confirmation, in a manner which is documented and compliant with assumptions, that an applicant applying for an SSL certificate is the owner of a domain/ip, as well as a business whose data will appear in the certificate. Under the PN-EN ISO 9000:2001 standard validation is a confirmation through providing objective evidence that specific usage requirements have been met. There are three types of SSL certificate validation: 1 Domain Validation Certificate (DV Certificate) primary security level displaying an Authentication Authority-verified domain or IP address, which a certificate has been issued for. The applicant s confirmation of ownership title to the domain or IP address precedes the issue of the certificate. 2 Organization 3 Extended Validation Certificate (OV Certificate) provides a high security level, displays verified business or organization data, along with a domain which the certificate has been issued for. Certification issue is preceded with a thorough verification of the applicant s data, as well as their title to the domain and IP address. Validation Certificate (EV Certificate) the highest security level, where the applicant s identity is verified in several stages: Stage I (online verification) a favourable verification of domain access rights is required from the applicant Stage II (document verification) an applicant is required to provide documents (corporate and identity documents) Stage III (submitting an application and a contract) EV SSL certificate issue requires submitting an application and entering into a contract with the Certification Authority. www.certum.eu 5
