Taking Classes Take classes according to the following priority 1. Prerequisite classes assigned at admission 2. Degree core/specialization core 3. Electives 4. Project or Thesis

Conditional admission Completing a Prerequisite Course Enroll in and pass the course (B or better) (CMPE 180, section = course # minus 100, example: CMPE 138: CMPE 180 section 38) -OR - Take the challenge exam for the course Satisfy other conditions as stated in your admission letter You must complete your prerequisite courses before you take more than 9 graduate credits

Prerequisite Classes Take prerequisite classes in this order: 1. Object-Oriented Language (CMPE 046 or Java Course) Math Prerequisite classes (Math 042) Complete before starting CMPE 272 2. Data Structures (CMPE 126 or CS 046B) Software Engineering (CMPE 131) Complete before starting CMPE 202 3. Database Systems (CMPE 138) Operating Systems (CMPE 142) Complete before starting specialization core Note: CMPE 271 and undergraduate courses cannot be used for degree credit

Challenging Prerequisite Classes Contact the course instructor between 1/23 and 1/30 You can take the challenge exam only once for each course

Graduate Writing Assessment Requirement (GWAR) Required of all students Usually satisfied by completing CMPE 294

Graduate Writing Requirement All graduate students in the Computer Engineering department must meet the graduate writing requirement in one of the following ways: Met writing requirement as an undergraduate at a California State University Sole author in professional publication* Completed technical writing course at another university** Complete CMPE 294 or ENGR 200W * Requires approval by AVP Graduate Studies and Research ** Requires approval by COE Technical Communications Director and AVP Graduate Studies and Research

Graduate Writing Requirement (continued) Most Computer Engineering department students meet requirement by taking CMPE 294 Students will be given an essay test during the first class meeting to determine if additional help is required Students failing the essay test will have to concurrently take and pass ENGR 90W Students with a passing Writing Skills Test (WST) score will not have to take the in class essay test

Maintaining Good Standing Students must maintain a GPA of 3.0 or above or they will go on probation Once on probation, students must attain a GPA of higher than 3.0 in each subsequent semester or they will be disqualified

Maintaining Active Student Status Newly admitted students must take at least one class in the first semester Students will lose their active status if they do not take classes for two semesters Requires reapplying to the university to regain active status Students can file a Leave of Absence prior to the first semester of leave to avoid losing active status while on leave

Internships Students are expected to gain professional experience to prepare for and to support their culminating experience, e.g. by including 0-6 units of internship (CMPE 298I) to their program of study Some companies require course enrollment Enroll in CMPE 298I (3 units)

Internships (International students) Highly recommended to enhance your culminating experience Can work on campus right away (TA, etc.) Max 20 hours/week during the semester, max 40 hours during the breaks (Summer, Winter) Take Curricular Practical Training (CPT) for each semester Maximum two (2) CPTs allowed Enroll in CMPE 298I (3 units per semester) Must be on program of study Maximum 6 units Prerequisite F1 visa 3.0 or better GPA Completed all classification conditions Completed two semesters at SJSU as a full-time student (9 units per semester) Can extend internships for up to 18 months after graduation (OPT)

Curricular Practical Training (CPT) Submit to Department Office CMPE 298I form Program of Studies form Completed CPT form Offer letter

Culminating Experience A student must take either of two plans to satisfy his/her culminating experience required for the degree Plan A - CMPE 295A & CMPE 295B (project) Plan B - CMPE 299A & CMPE 299B (thesis) A student should acquire professional experience (CMPE 298I) to enhance his/her culminating experience A student is allowed to take CMPE 295A or CMPE 299A if he/she: 1. Is in good standing and is classified or able to reach classified status 2. Has completed the degree core courses 3. Has satisfied the GWAR 4. Has completed two specialization core courses NOTE: One of the courses listed in items 2 and 3 above may be taken concurrently with CMPE 295A.

Graduating CMPE 295A or CMPE 299A File Candidacy form CMPE 295B or CMPE 299B File Request for Award of Masters Degree Form with graduate studies File Course Substitution form if necessary
