MEDICINE: FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS What is the minimum GPA required to apply? Applicants need to have a minimum GPA of 70% (roughly a 2.7 on a 4.0 scale) in order to apply. Some universities will assess your GPA based on the last three years of undergraduate study, and others will factor in all years of undergraduate study. Contact GlobaLinks Learning Abroad for details. What are the MCAT requirements? The minimum MCAT requirement is an 8/8/M/8. If you do not meet this minimum requirement, you will not be eligible to apply to the graduate entry MBBS programs available through GlobaLinks Learning Abroad. If you are below the minimum requirement, you will need to re-sit the exam prior to the application deadline or your application will not be considered. Some exceptions apply contact GlobaLinks Learning Abroad for details. At the end of the first year you have a four week period where you can do an elective in a hospital or travel overseas. Applications open between February and April each year. You can begin/submit your applications at this time. Most students begin their applications in their final semester of university. Tuition fees for international students range from $36,000 - $66,000 AUD per year. What is the latest date I can sit the MCAT? Most application deadlines are in June, so you will want to sit the MCAT no later than early May to ensure your scores are available prior to the deadline. If your scores are not available by the application deadline, you are encouraged to contact our office when they are released to see if there are any programs still accepting late applications. Some universities will take applications until October 31st, but only if international student spaces are still available. Can I sit the MCAT more than once? Yes, you can sit the MCAT as many times as necessary to meet the minimum 8/8/M/8 requirement. The universities will be able to see all of your scores, but you will only be assessed on the highest score that meets the requirement. The other test results will not have an effect on your application outcome. If I study medicine abroad, can I practice in Canada? To transfer your international medical degree back to Canada, there are multiple exams required that are administered through the Medical Council of Canada (MCC). For the most up to date and detailed information, you are encouraged to contact the Medical Council of Canada. Additionally there are also residency requirements that must be met in order to practice in Canada. What is the difference between the Bachelor of Dental Surgery and the Doctor of Dental Surgery/Doctor of Dental Medicine? In Australia and New Zealand, dentistry has traditionally been offered at the undergraduate level, though select Australian universities are now offering it at the graduate level (Doctor of Dental Surgery/Medicine). Both options provide you with the necessary qualifications to practice dentistry. What are the application requirments? Application requirements vary by university. Effective March 31, 2010, a reciprocal agreement was reached between the Australian Dental Council and the Commission Dental Accreditation of Canada (CDAC), promising recognition to Canadian graduates from accredited Australian programs for certification and licensure. The reciprocal agreement does not apply to dentistry programs in New Zealand.
