1. MULTI-PURPOSE DRAINAGE MANAGEMENT PLANS

WHAT IS MULTI-PURPOSE DRAINAGE MANAGEMENT? Engineered drainage systems that provide both private drainage benefits and public water management benefits - Al Kean, BWSR

WHAT IS MULTI-PURPOSE DRAINAGE MANAGEMENT? Faribault County SWCD Received 2013 Conservation Drainage Management Grant - Utilizing Clean Water Funds Faribault SWCD and Faribault County Drainage Authority developed and managed Martin County 2013 Conservation Drainage Management Grant BWSR ISG Developed and Managed with Martin County Drainage Authority Soil Erosion and Drainage Law Compliance (SEDLCP) 2015 Blue Earth County Drainage Authority and ISG Developed and Managed Blue Earth County SWCD is reviewing

WHY SHOULD WE DO MULTI-PURPOSE DRAINAGE MANAGEMENT? Estimated over 20,000 miles of Open Ditch and Potentially more than that in Public Tile Systems are in Need of Repairs and Upgrades THESE ARE ALL OPPORTUNITIES!

WHAT IS MULTI-PURPOSE DRAINAGE MANAGEMENT? Preventative Measures Conservative practices that can be applied towards the existing agricultural land without dramatically changing the layout of the landscape. Control Measures Either conveys water, controls flow direction and rate, or maintains a desired water elevation. Treatment Measures Treatment of runoff and drainage water by providing filtering through use of vegetative cover or water storage.

WHAT IS MULTI-PURPOSE DRAINAGE MANAGEMENT? On Field (Preventative and Control Measures) Practices that can be applied to all farmland in a watershed. Nutrient and Tillage Management Crop Rotations On Farm (Preventative and Control Measures) Practices that a individual landowner may implement. Surface Water Subsurface Water On Drainage System (Treatment and Control Measures) Practices that will include a group of landowners or public drainage system. Peak Flow Reduction Water Treatment

SUMMARY CHANGES TO 103E.015 Implementation of MDM plans into all drainage projects Allows for More Landowner Involvement When incorporated into a Repair or Improvement can provided options that can be utilized immediately or when landowners have issues Allows to Look for Conservation Funding at the Start of Projects Utilize Plans when problems occur on a System
