An Order for Morning Prayer on Sunday

This Service of Morning Prayer on a Sunday is designed to be used when a Minister fails to arrive for the Sunday Service. It is designed to be led by a Churchwarden or Licensed Lay Minister. There are opportunities to sing hymns where this is possible. It would not be usual or expected for a sermon to be preached under such circumstances. However that s not to say that a group discussion in the style of a bible study might not be welcomed by parishioners. The Diocesan Liturgical Committee would very much welcome any feedback you may have about this Service and how it worked in your parish when you had occasion to use it. We can be contacted through Diocesan Church House.

An Order for Morning Prayer on Sunday Preparation O Lord, open our lips and our mouth shall proclaim your praise. Grace mercy and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ be with you and also with you. The person leading the Service welcomes those present. A Hymn may be sung here Prayer of Thanksgiving We have come together in the name of Christ to offer our praise and thanksgiving, to hear and receive God s holy word, to pray for the needs of the world, and to seek the forgiveness of our sins, that by the power of the Holy Spirit we may give ourselves to the service of God. Prayers of Penitence Jesus says, Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is close at hand. So let us turn away from sin and turn to Christ, confessing our sins in penitence and faith. Seek the Lord while he may be found, call upon him while he is near. Lord have mercy Lord have mercy Let the wicked abandon their ways and the unrighteous their thoughts. Christ have mercy Christ have mercy

Turn back to the Lord, who will have mercy; to our God who will richly pardon. Lord have mercy Lord have mercy Grant, we beseech you, merciful Lord, to your faithful people pardon and peace, that they may be cleansed from all their sins and serve you with a quiet mind; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Blessed are you, Lord our God, creator and redeemer of all; to you be glory and praise for ever. From the waters of chaos you drew forth the world and in your great love fashioned us in your own image. Now, through the deep waters of death, you have brought your people to new birth by raising your Son to life in triumph. May Christ your light ever dawn in our hearts as we offer you our sacrifice of thanks and praise. A Hymn may be sung here The Word of God Psalmody The response to the verse: The Commandment of the Lord is pure, is: and gives light to the eyes. Psalm 19 The commandment of the Lord is pure 1 The heavens are telling the glory of God and the firmament proclaims his handiwork. 2 One day pours out its song to another and one night unfolds knowledge to another. 3 They have neither speech nor language and their voices are not heard, 4 Yet their sound has gone out into all lands and their words to the ends of the world.

5 In them has he set a tabernacle for the sun, that comes forth as a bridegroom out of his chamber and rejoices as a champion to run his course. 6 It goes forth from the end of the heavens and runs to the very end again, and there is nothing hidden from its heat. The commandment of the Lord is pure 7 The law of the Lord is perfect, reviving the soul; the testimony of the Lord is sure and gives wisdom to the simple. 8 The statutes of the Lord are right and rejoice the heart; the commandment of the Lord is pure 9 The fear of the Lord is clean and endures for ever; the judgements of the Lord are true and righteous altogether. 10 More to be desired are they than gold, more than much fine gold, sweeter also than honey, dripping from the honeycomb. 11 By them also is your servant taught and in keeping them there is great reward. The commandment of the Lord is pure 12 Who can tell how often they offend? O cleanse me from my secret faults! 13 Keep your servant also from presumptuous sins lest they get dominion over me; so shall I be undefiled, and innocent of great offence. 14 Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in your sight, O Lord, my strength and my redeemer.

Glory to the Father and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning is now and shall be for ever. The commandment of the Lord is pure Old Testament Reading Old Testament reading is taken from the lectionary for the day. Old Testament Canticle A Song of David The response to the verse: Splendour and majesty are yours, O God, is: you are exalted as head over all. Splendour and majesty are yours, O God; you are exalted as head over all. 1 Blessed are you, God of Israel, for ever and ever, for yours is the greatness, the power, the glory, the splendour and the majesty. 2 Everything in heaven and on earth is yours; yours is the kingdom, O Lord, and you are exalted as head over all. 3 Riches and honour come from you and you rule over all. Splendour and majesty are yours, O God; you are exalted as head over all. 4 In your hand are power and might; yours it is to give power and strength to all. 5 And now we give you thanks, our God, and praise your glorious name. 6 For all things come from you, and of your own have we given you. 1 Chronicles 29.10b-13, 14b Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning is now and shall be for ever. Splendour and majesty are yours, O God; you are exalted as head over all.

New Testament Reading New Testament reading is taken from the lectionary for the day. The Gospel Canticle may be said, or sung Gospel Canticle Said version: The response to the verse: You have raised up for us a mighty Saviour, is: born of the house of your servant David. You have raised up for us a mighty Saviour, born of the house of your servant David. 1 Blessed be the Lord the God of Israel, who has come to his people and set them free. 2 He has raised up for us a mighty Saviour, born of the house of his servant David. 3 Through his holy prophets God promised of old to save us from our enemies, from the hands of all that hate us, 4 To show mercy to our ancestors, and to remember his holy covenant. You have raised up for us a mighty Saviour, born of the house of your servant David. 5 This was the oath God swore to our father Abraham: to set us free from the hands of our enemies, 6 Free to worship him without fear, holy and righteous in his sight all the days of our life. 7 And you, child, shall be called the prophet of the Most High, for you will go before the Lord to prepare his way, 8 To give his people knowledge of salvation by the forgiveness of all their sins. You have raised up for us a mighty Saviour, born of the house of your servant David. 9 In the tender compassion of our God the dawn from on high shall break upon us, 10 To shine on those who dwell in darkness and the shadow of death, and to guide our feet into the way of peace.

Sung version: Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning is now and shall be for ever. You have raised up for us a mighty Saviour, born of the house of your servant David. Now bless the God of Israel who comes in love and power, who raises from the royal house deliv rance in this hour. Through holy prophets God has sworn to free us from alarm, to save us from the heavy hand of all who wish us harm. Remembering the covenant, God rescues us from fear, that we might serve in holiness and peace from year to year. And you, my child, shall go before, to preach, to prophesy, that all may know the tender love, the grace of God most high. In tender mercy, God will send the dayspring from on high, our rising sun, the light of life for those who sit and sigh. God comes to guide our way to peace, that death shall reign no more. Sing praise to the Holy One, O worship and adore. To God the father, fount of grace, through his beloved Son, with god their Spirit, bond of love, be glory ever One. Luke 1.68-79 (Tune: DCM, eg Kingsfold ) Copyright Archbishops Council (2005) Daily Prayer. Church House Publishing. Pg 611.) The Creed Do you believe and trust in God the Father, source of all being and life, the one for whom we exist? We believe and trust in him. Do you believe and trust in God the Son, who took our human nature, died for us and rose again? We believe and trust in him. Do you believe and trust in God the Holy Spirit, who gives life to the people of God and makes Christ known in the world? We believe and trust in him. This is the faith of the Church. This is our faith. We believe and trust in one God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

Prayers Intercessional prayer is offered. This might include: Prayers for the Church, the Archbishop, Bishop(s), the worshipping community, your interregnum and those who have been chosen to discern a new incumbent. Creation, the world, human society, the Sovereign, those in authority. The local community. Those who suffer, those who are sick. Those who have died, the grieving and bereaved. God of glory, by the raising of your Son you have broken the chains of death and hell: fill your Church with faith and hope; for a new day has dawned and the way to life stands open in our Saviour Jesus Christ. The Collect As our Saviour taught us, so we pray Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done; on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory, for ever and ever. A Hymn may be sung here The Conclusion The Grace The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit, be with us all evermore.
