Precept Ministries International 14 Holiday Drive Brantford, Ontario N3R 7J4 Leading David writes, The law of the Lord is perfect reviving the soul. :7 Do you believe it?, is a song celebrating God s perfect law, the Torah. This psalm can easily be broken into three segments. Over the next three days you will study one segment at a time. Day One You ll find printed on the last page of this lesson. Begin with prayer and then read the entire Psalm out loud. 1. How would you segment? a. b. c. 2. Read the first six verses and mark heavens and God. Once you have finished create a list on all you have learned about the heavens and God. Heavens God 2014 Precept Ministries International 1

Leading 3. Look up the following cross references and list what you learn regarding creation. Ask who, what, when, where, why and how as you read. a. Genesis 1 a. Isaiah 40:28 a. Romans 1:18-21 4. Look up the Hebrew Word for declaring. What do you learn? 5. Fill in the blanks God through His Did you get the blanks? The heavens are telling of the Glory of God, literally means that God speaks through His creation. Paul writes in Romans 1 that man is without excuse for God has been seen at work since creation. 6. How does knowing this truth transform the way you live? Look around you, can you see it? God s glory is revealed through His wonderful creation. Take a few minutes today and spend some time looking around, listen to the birds, watch as the sun goes down. God is at work don t miss it. 2 2014 Precept Ministries International

Day Two Leading Refresh your mind by reading the entire Psalm out loud again. Remember repetition is good for memorizing scripture. Don t skip out on this, you will be blessed. 1. Read verses 7-11 and mark all references to the Law including pronouns (testimony, precept, commandment). List all you learn about the Law. 2. Look up the Hebrew definitions for the following words: a. perfect (v. 7) b. right (v. 8) c. fear (v. 9) By the way, did you mark fear of the Lord when you were marking references to God s Word? 3. Look up the following cross references about the fear of the Lord a. Deuteronomy 4:10 b. Psalm 111:10 Based on these cross references, why does David refer to the fear of the Lord as clean, enduring forever. 2014 Precept Ministries International 3

Leading 4. Look up 2 Timothy 3:16-17. What does it say in regards to the Word of God? 5. How do these verses relate to :7-11 6. How does David describe the value of the Law? 7. What does David say the Word of God does in verse 11? 8. Fill in the blanks God through His 9. How have these truths opened your eyes to the value of God s Word for your own life? 4 2014 Precept Ministries International

Day Three Leading Today is our final day of study in before we meet at Recharge. I am looking forward to discussing these truths with you. I pray that your eyes have been enlightened to what God is saying and that you will be ready to share these truths when we have our discussion during the session. Again refresh your memory by reading out loud. Don t be shy, use it as a prayer to start your study. The final three verses take a huge 180 degree turn. David has been firing arrows of worship towards God for eleven verses but then he turns the arrow away from God and now points it toward himself requesting God to now look at his life. 1. Read verses 12-14 and mark all references to sin including pronouns (faults, transgressions) and draw a heart over the word heart. List everything you learn about sin. 2. What do you think David means by hidden sins? 3. Look at verse 6. How does the word hidden relate to verse 12? 4. How does David s description of the Law in verses 7-10 relate to verse 12? 5. What are presumptuous sins? 2014 Precept Ministries International 5

Leading 6. Look up the Hebrew word and definition for presumptuous. What do you learn? 7. Sins committed in arrogance, are sins that are done in disregard to the commands that God has laid out in His law. David indicates that presumptuous sin leads to what other type of sin in verse 13? 8. Look up the following verses that show the result of sin: a. Numbers 15:30-31 b. Romans 3:23 c. Romans 6:23 9. Sin leads to death and separation and David knew that. More than once He asked God to search his heart. Look up why he asks Him to do so: a. Jeremiah 17:9 b. James 1:22-25 c. Psalm 139:23-24 6 2014 Precept Ministries International

Leading 10. What does David want to be before God? 11. Look up the following verses a. 1 John 1:9 b. Romans 8:1 c. Romans 12:1-2 David s desire is to be acceptable before God. What about you? What has God shown you in regards to hidden, presumptuous and enslaving sins in your life? 1 John 1:8 says, if we say that we have no sin, we are deceiving ourselves and truth is not in us. Friend are you deceiving yourself? May your prayer today be the same as David s, Search My heart Oh Lord, search my heart. Father, I am so thankful for your Word, Your Word is truth and because it is truth it pierces to the heart. Father I pray you search my heart and reveal to me sin in my life that is hidden...sin I continue to commit knowing it s wrong. Father I am thankful for your Son Jesus and the cross, because of the cross you give me life. May my life glorify You in all I do and say. Father forgive me of my sins, make me blameless and innocent before you today. Amen! 2014 Precept Ministries International 7

Observation Worksheet Leading THE heavens are telling of the glory of God; And their expanse is declaring the work of His hands. 2 Day to day pours forth speech, And night to night reveals knowledge. 3 There is no speech, nor are there words; Their voice is not heard. 4 Their line has gone out through all the earth, And their utterances to the end of the world. In them He has placed a tent for the sun, 5 Which is as a bridegroom coming out of his chamber; It rejoices as a strong man to run his course. 6 Its rising is from one end of the heavens, And its circuit to the other end of them; And there is nothing hidden from its heat. 7 The law of the Lord is perfect, restoring the soul; The testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple. 8 The precepts of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart; The commandment of the Lord is pure, enlightening the eyes. 9 The fear of the Lord is clean, enduring forever; The judgments of the Lord are true; they are righteous altogether. 10 They are more desirable than gold, yes, than much fine gold; Sweeter also than honey and the drippings of the honeycomb. 11 Moreover, by them Your servant is warned; In keeping them there is great reward. 12 Who can discern his errors? Acquit me of hidden faults. 13 Also keep back Your servant from presumptuous sins; Let them not rule over me; Then I will be blameless, And I shall be acquitted of great transgression. 14 Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart Be acceptable in Your sight, O Lord, my rock and my Redeemer. 8 2014 Precept Ministries International
