WELFARE SERVICES Addiction Recovery Program Overview LDS Family Services 1

President James E. Faust (1920 2007) The Church has an addiction recovery program that has been adapted from the original Twelve Steps of Alcoholics Anonymous into a framework of the doctrines and beliefs of the Church. These 12 steps are found in A Guide to Addiction Recovery and Healing Ensign; November 2007, pgs. 122 124 2

Purpose The purpose of the Addiction Recovery Program (ARP) is to assist individuals and families in recovering and healing from addiction and to more fully enjoy the blessings of Church participation and temple covenants Recovery meetings are based on an adapted version of the original Twelve Steps of Alcoholics Anonymous and provide participants an opportunity to give and receive support 3

Program Workbook Written by those who have suffered from addiction and experienced the miracle of recovery and healing Based on gospel principles and focused on the Atonement of Jesus Christ Developed as a workbook Adapted from the original Twelve Steps of Alcoholics Anonymous Also available in Spanish, Portuguese, Norwegian, Finnish, Danish, and Swedish Currently being translated into other languages 4

Program Workbook Table of Content Honesty Hope Trust in God Truth Confession Change of Heart Humility Seeking Forgiveness Restitution and Reconciliation Daily Accountability Personal Revelation Service 5

A Comparison of the Twelve Steps Step The Original Twelve Steps of Alcoholics Anonymous Doctrinal Foundation The Adapted Twelve Steps of the Restored Gospel of Jesus Christ 1 We admitted we were powerless over alcohol that our lives had become unmanageable. Honesty Admit that you, of yourself, are powerless to overcome your addictions and that your life has become unmanageable. 2 Came to believe that a Power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity. Hope Come to believe that the power of God can restore you to complete spiritual health. 3 Made a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of God as we understood Him. Trust in God Decide to turn your will and your life over to the care of God the Eternal Father and His Son, Jesus Christ. 4 Made a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves. Truth Make a searching and fearless written moral inventory of yourself. 5 Admitted to God, to ourselves and to another human being the exact nature of our wrongs. Confession Admit to yourself, to your Heavenly Father in the name of Jesus Christ, to proper priesthood authority, and to another person the exact nature of your wrongs. 6 Were entirely ready to have God remove all these defects of character. Change of Heart Become entirely ready to have God remove all your character weaknesses. 7 Humbly asked Him to remove our shortcomings. Humility Humbly ask Heavenly Father to remove your shortcomings. 8 Made a list of all persons we had harmed, and became willing to make amends to them all. Seeking Forgiveness Make a written list of all persons you have harmed and become willing to make restitution to them. 9 Made direct amends to such people wherever possible, except when to do so would injure them or others. Restitution and Reconciliation Wherever possible, make direct restitution to all persons you have harmed. 10 Continued to take personal inventory and when we were wrong promptly admitted it. Daily Accountability Continue to take personal inventory, and when you are wrong promptly admit it. 11 Sought through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with God as we understood Him, praying only for knowledge of His will for us and the power to carry that out. Personal Revelation Seek through prayer and meditation to know the Lord s will and to have the power to carry it out. 12 Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these steps, we tried to carry this message to alcoholics, and to practice these principles in all our affairs. Service Having had a spiritual awakening as a result of the Atonement of Jesus Christ, share this message with others and practice these principles in all you do.
