Foreward Thomas H. Davenport I m pleased that NewVantage Partners conducted this survey and made the results available to me for review prior to publication. There is a lot of interest in the topic of Big Data as evidenced by the high response rate to the survey. The survey yielded some interesting findings, many of which are relevant to research I have conducted: There is more going on in large firms in the Big Data space than I would have expected. Both the press and my research suggest a high level of Big Data activity among startups, but less among large companies. This may mean that financial services companies, which were heavily represented in the survey, are ahead of most other firms in their exploitation of Big Data. It may also mean that the respondents didn t make a strong distinction between Big Data and traditional analytics projects. The results suggest and I already believed that Big Data is not a terribly useful term. For the survey respondents, the variety of data sources is a more salient attribute than the volume of the data. Perhaps we should call it mashup data instead. My research on Big Data startups suggests that the primary objective is less to support internal decisionmaking, and more to support new customer-facing products and processes. There is some support for this in the survey; three years from now, the most common benefit expected is an improved customer experience. Now, however, it s better decision-making. Regardless of whether the data are supporting decisions or products/processes, the primary beneficiary of Big Data appears to be the customer. The single most common application of Big Data in this survey is probably reading between the lines of several question responses the use of multiple customer data sources to better understand their needs and target promotions and offers to them. Big Data is often described as unstructured, but these responses suggest that structured transactions are the most common data source. In many cases these are probably being combined with less structured data like web clickstreams and social media content. Since the respondents are focused on integrating various sources and types of data, data integration will continue to be one of the greatest challenges faced by IT organizations. There is a storm approaching on the Big Data talent front; 70% say they plan to hire data scientists, but they already find this challenging to extremely difficult, and there is no reliable source of new talent in this category. It would seem to be a wise move to begin building such talent as well as buying it. In addition, the survey results suggest that organizations need to provide training to executives and decisionmakers on how Big Data is going to change their businesses, and how to manage it. This sampling of Big Data activity is one of the few I have seen that focuses on large organizations and offers responses from C-level executives. It should be very useful to organizations in suggesting immediate and longer-term actions for managing this valuable new resource. Thomas H. Introduction In the Spring of 2012, executive participants at one of NewVantage Partners Executive Thought Leadership Roundtable discussions asked us to explore the issues and business trends in America s leading companies relating to Big Data. We believe that the key to success is the ability to create a Big Data environment that can accelerate the time-to-answer critical business questions that demonstrate business value. In response, during the summer of 2012, NewVantage Partners conducted an exclusive survey with C-level executives and function heads from many of America s leading companies. This in-depth industry survey targeted the most senior Fortune 500 and Federal Agency business and technology leaders responsible for overseeing enterprise Big Data initiatives. The survey identified five core Themes and Trends, which were highlighted in our survey report issued in September 2012: The Promise of Improved Data-Driven Decision Making Customers and Risk are the Primary Focus It s About Variety, Not Volume Organizational Alignment is Critical to Success The Biggest Roadblock May Be More about People Than Technology The potential power of Big Data technology is clear, but the path to success for companies is neither simple nor straightforward. It is complex and requires careful planning and clear roadmaps to offer the highest likelihood of success. This consolidated report represents condensed version of the complete survey findings and results of the subsequent executive briefings, organized into three sections: Themes and Trend People: A Key to Success Creating a Big Data Environment to Accelerate Business Value. These themes and trends were also core to in-depth follow-on briefing discussions we conducted with the original survey respondents, as well as a couple dozen additional firms that subsequently expressed interest in the survey and shared their perspectives with us on the state of their own Big Data initiatives. This is our consolidated summary report and shares what we learned from both the data gathered in the survey and our subsequent briefings with respondents. It combines an analysis of the survey findings with a synthesis of the state of Big Data in the enterprise and how organizations should be planning for successful implementation of their initiatives. 3 www.newvantage.com

Methodology The survey posed 65 in-depth questions designed to provide a useful benchmark for enterprises seeking to understand the state of Big Data initiatives among peer institutions, and to answer critical questions such as: How much are enterprises investing in Big Data initiatives? Where is the sponsorship and funding for Big Data initiatives coming from? What are the initial applications, kinds of data, and solutions/approaches that enterprises are employing for their Big Data initiatives? Why is Big Data an important initiative for leading enterprises? Where do organizations stand in terms of the comparative maturity of their Big Data initiatives and their rate of progress? Which kinds of enterprises are at the forefront of Big Data capabilities and initiatives? Demographics Survey respondents included Chief Data Officers, Chief Information Officers, Chief Technology Officers, Chief Analytics Officers, Chief Information Architects, Line-of- Business Heads, and senior Function Heads (SVP/VP). The breakdown of respondents was as follows: Organizationally and functionally, the roles of the respondents were: IT 47% Business Analytics 30% Line-of-Business Management 23% Over fifty executives representing leading Fortune 1000 companies and large Federal agencies participated in the survey. All participants were executives with budgetary and decision-making responsibility or direct visibility and influence for Big Data initiatives. Financial service companies have traditionally been at the forefront of using strategic data and analytics to support their core business functions and were the most strongly represented industry group. Industry representation is summarized as follows: Financial Services 53% Insurance 19% Government 10% Other Business 18% The majority of these organizations are very large, with at least 30,000 employees, and they operate diverse businesses in multiple markets. C-Suite Executives 30% Enterprise Function Heads (EVP/SVP) Head of Analytics, Head of Informatics, Head of Enterprise Information 50% Data Program Head (SVP/VP) Head of Data Architecture, Chief Data Architect 20% Note: The total percentage in a table does not always add up to exactly 100%, but a number very close to it (e.g., 99 or 101), because of rounding. Executive Summary Big Data is top of mind for leading industry executives. The Big Data Executive Survey conducted in Summer 2012 identifies a set of trends and themes common to the survey respondents: The Promise of Improved Data-Driven Decision Making: Big Data has arrived and is being tested or is in use at major organizations 85% of the respondents have Big Data initiative planned or in progress. Analytic capabilities in companies are still challenging, but regardless of those skills, all respondents are looking for Big Data to have a major impact on their business. The primary reason organizations are investing in Big Data is to improve analytic capabilities and make smarter business decisions. Customer and Risk Management are the Focus: Big Data is being considered for a surprisingly broad range of applications. In all, 17 different business functions were named as driving Big Data initiatives. However, when asked to identify the biggest opportunity for Big Data, over half the respondents cited customer insights and customer experience. ability to analyze diverse data sources and new data types, not managing very large data sets. Organizational Alignment is Critical to Success: Big Data initiatives need to address organizational and data silos to achieve success. 80% of the respondents saw Big Data initiatives as reaching across more than one lineof-business or function. Biggest Roadblock may be People and Skills: The big data opportunity carries with it a huge challenge around organizational development and change. More than just new technical skills, organizations are looking to create new roles, processes, and programs to leverage big data. However, expanding these teams with new leader- ship that understands big data and its application is viewed as very challenging. 42.6% rated the ability, by executives and business leaders, to use data and analytics to improve or transform business as less than adequate. It s about Variety, not Volume: The survey indicates companies are focused on the variety of data, not its volume, both today and in three years. Themes and Trends This report summarizes our high level observations and shares the major themes and trends identified by the survey. We also plan to publish additional reports focused on specific industries and issues in Big Data. To establish a baseline on what Big Data is, at the beginning the survey the following definition was given to the participants: Why Big Data? The primary reason organizations are investing in Big Data is to improve analytics capabilities and make smarter business decisions. Most respondents cited the ability to integrate and analyze a wide variety of data as the primary value of Big Data platforms. [Figure 1] Big Data is a term used to describe data sets so large, so complex or that require such rapid processing (sometimes called the Volume/Variety/Velocity problem), that they become difficult or impossible to work with using standard database management or analytical tools. Manipulating data sets like these often require massively parallel software running on tens, hundreds, or even thousands of servers. Big Data growth includes the explosion of social media, video, photos, and unstructured text in addition to the data gathered by ubiquitous sensing devices including smart phones. Among the many difficulties associated with Big Data are capture, storage, search, sharing, analysis, and data visualization. In reviewing the survey results, several themes became clear. What follows is an explanation and interpretation of these themes and potential trends. They are using Big Data to address significant gaps in accessing relevant data and developing analytic skills. Over half the respondents rate their access to relevant, accurate and timely data as less than adequate and only 21.3% rank their company s analytic capabilities as more than adequate or world class. [Figure 2] The Promise of Improved Data-Driven Decision Making Big Data has arrived and is being tested or is in use at major organizations. 85% of the respondents have a Big Data initiative planned or in progress and almost half are using Big Data in some type of production/operational capacity, ranging from production reporting to 24/7 mission-critical applications. 7 www.newvantage.com

Whether their current analytics capabilities are ranked as minimal or as world class, all respondents are looking for Big Data to have a major impact on their business. Advanced companies with large analytic staffs (over 25% of respondents have over 500 data miners and analysts) are seeking to push the productivity of these teams with advanced tools and automation, while less mature companies hope to use Big Data to leapfrog their capabilities to gain to parity. Some Leaders are Emerging While most organizations have begun allocating exploratory budgets for investigation and growth, some leaders are making a major commitment to Big Data. About a quarter of the companies are spending under $1 million annually to evaluate Big Data, while half are launching preliminary solutions with budgets between $1 million and $10 million dollars. On average, each respondent will spend more than $14 million annually on Big Data in 3 years. Initiatives are supported from the Top and Across Multiple Lines of Business Big Data clearly has the attention of the C-suite. 40% of the respondents held a C-level title and two-thirds of them are seeking a broad, enterprise benefit from Big Data. The thought leadership behind these initiatives is crossfunctional with 75% of respondents indicating they are coming from a business/it collaboration. Over 75% of respondents indicated that they expect an impact across multiple lines of business, and that a C-level executive or head of a line of business is sponsoring 85% of the initiatives. [Figure 4] A quarter of the respondents are even more committed, spending in excess of $10 million on Big Data this year. A handful of firms are forecasting spending over $100 million annually in 3 years. [Figure 3] Companies expect to generate business value from Big Data, but vary on how to measure it. Over half do not have a ROI driven business case, but 85% expected a qualitative or quantitative benefit to business or IT performance. For half the respondents this is an incremental spend and could be just the beginning for increased budgets for Big Data. 8 www.newvantage.com

The two primary benefits resulting from Big Data initiatives that were cited by respondents are better, fact-based decision-making and improved customer experience. [Figure 5] respondents cited customer insights or customer experience as the biggest opportunity: Understanding cross-channel activities to signal a customer opportunity/action Customer retention and customer experience We are just starting to explore. Largest potential is to understand customer trends and issues. Customer and Risk Management are the Focus Big Data is being considered for a surprisingly broad range of applications. In all, 17 different business functions were named as driving Big Data initiatives (the 9 listed below and 8 identified as other, such as finance, actuarial, clinical analysis, and investment management.) [Figure 6] I believe the biggest opportunity is in enhancing our ability to more accurately target consumers to provide them with a differentiated, more personalized experience. A close second would be better understanding our consumers to more effectively inform the product development process. The other most-cited opportunity areas included marketing, fraud detection, product innovation, and service efficiency, in addition to quality, multi-channel coordination, and process efficiencies. This diversity, with a strong focus on managing the customer relationship, was also highlighted in the data domains being incorporated in Big Data initiatives. Over 70% of respondents were using customer transactions, while channel, market, product, service and fraud data were being used by over 30%. It is a worth noting that the existing data in an organization (transactions, clickstream, content from Office documents) is seen as the major use of Big Data by 60% of respondents, today and in 3 years. When asked to identify the biggest opportunity for Big Data, some dominant themes emerged. Half the 9 www.newvantage.com

It s About Variety, Not Volume Interestingly, the survey indicates companies are focused on the variety of data, not its volume, both today and in three years. The breadth of applications and data domains cited leads to a logical, yet surprising result: the most important goal and potential reward of Big Data initiatives is the ability to analyze diverse data sources and new data types, not managing very large data sets. This theme was reinforced in responses to the definition of Big Data. 40% of the respondents comments mentioned data variety, complexity, and quality, while only 10% mentioned data volume: Our problem is less about volume and more about variety. This emphasis on analyzing known data sources was reflected in the data structures that respondents expected to use. Relational data models are the most common standard used in Big Data projects, followed by unstructured text and time-series data, now and in 3 years. While the NoSQL models have some advantages, the structure of existing data assets and SQL skill base still makes relational models central to most Big Data initiatives. These two responses to the definition of Big Data were typical: We include structured data in the definition. We agree that video, photos and other multimedia format are part of the definition, but we don t touch those spaces. This aligns with the types of data focused on by the respondents. Marrying transactional, unstructured, and clickstream data together for analysis is a challenging, perennial problem with high potential business value. The prospect of adding new data sources, from social media to sensor data, may provide an incremental benefit, but is not the primary focus of companies now or in 3 years. Most respondents are using Big Data to attack known problems (integrating and analyzing diverse data) from known data sources. [Figure 7] The only qualifier is the convergence of analytics across varieties (e.g. analytics that span structured and unstructured). The most significant challenge is creating the bridge to legacy technology and data, you can t ignore your past. New Insights, Not New Data New analytic discovery is driving many of the Big Data initiatives. Most respondents intend to use Big Data to garner new discoveries and insights from their data assets, over improving accuracy of existing models or accelerating the analysis process, and they expect discovery analytics to be the primary focus 3 years from now. This reflects a belief that there is still a lot of untapped value in existing data assets and that new discoveries will not require entirely new data sources. This theme runs counter to much of the Big Data discussion, which emphasizes the value of external data, such as social media. This also implies that discovery is more important than optimization or automation, which has been a major focus of traditional business intelligence. 10 www.newvantage.com

Organizational Alignment is Critical to Success Respondents indicated that Big Data initiatives need to address the existence of organizational and data silos to achieve success. 80% of respondents saw Big Data initiatives as reaching across more than one line-of-business or function, with a significant focus on integrating a wider variety of data from across the enterprise. This requires alignment and coordination across business units, as well as solid capabilities for accessing data, performing analytics, and applying insights. Sourcing and discriminating the relative value of different types and sources of input data; then internal hurdles to accessing transactional data (cost & data sharing restrictions) Siloized and inefficient and data infrastructure Biggest Roadblock may be People and Skills Big Data has the potential to provide answers to many key questions for businesses, but asking the right questions remains the first step. The survey revealed that IT and business units have some different perceptions about the state of big data and the readiness for it. 61% of IT respondents thought that access to data was less than adequate, while only 46% of data users (analysts or business users) gave this rating. The ability of executives and business leaders to use data and analytics to improve or transform the business revealed an even bigger gap: 57% of IT felt that it was less than adequate while only 18% of business users gave this rating. This mismatch in perceived capabilities indicates that alignment is a potential issue. Another challenge is understanding the data. Many respondents felt that accessing existing data sources, and understanding which new ones are most worthwhile, will be a barrier to generating value. Respondents indicated various factors contributed to the challenges of effectively utilizing Big Data: Lack of knowledge of the possibilities. For many it is still a fancy IT thing. To make sure we properly define the problems we are trying to solve. Finding a solid use case. Most use cases are notional. We know what it can do generally, but we can t quantify it down to a specific use case that will pass the CBA process and get funding Conveying the business value and getting adequate funding. Painting the business vision of why a whole new approach to data infrastructure is needed to harness the business value from Big Data. More than half did not have adequate access to relevant, accurate, and timely data now, and cited the following as the biggest challenges to adopting big data: We receive consumer data from multiple sources, each with often differing permissions for use. Tying those together in a compliant/appropriate way while maintaining and enforcing explicit usage rights for different data components is a significant challenge. Many organizations are looking to create new roles, processes, and programs to leverage Big Data. Although many had a large existing staff of strong analysts, most were very concerned about developing and acquiring skills needed to leverage Big Data. 11 www.newvantage.com

All respondents cited having issues in sourcing analytical skills and over 75% said it was challenging. [Figure 8] Adjusting to a new methodology for analytics vs traditional modeling process. Change Management Challenge Managing change is perceived as a critical factor is enabling the success of Big Data initaitives. 43% of respondents rated the ability, by executives and business leaders, to use data and analytics to improve or transform business as less than adequate. As skills issues are addressed, many organizations are concerned that their ability to change will end up being the biggest barrier to success: Searching for Data Scientists One of the biggest challenges is filling the new role of the data scientist, which 70% of organizations planned on hiring. The survey defined data science as a discipline, still somewhat loosely defined, that incorporates applying varying degrees of statistics, data visualizations, computer programming, data mining, machine learning, and database engineering to solve complex data problems. Challenges with adoption of new technologies and educating end users. Big Data is potentially threatening to old line information vendors who competed on the ability to horde data, whether unique or commoditized. Big Data requires you to think differently about the traditional operating model. Institutional inertia favoring conventional systems 80% of the respondents said it was challenging to fill this role. Many respondents cited a lack of the right skills as among the biggest challenges to effectively using Big Data: entrenched, single purpose data sets and owners lack of clarity and confidence around payoff data sharing/usage policies rethinking BI and data mining with today s technologies/tools vs. traditional pathways Finding people who understand the sources of data and how to analyze and leverage Getting comfortable with data being hosted; analytic tools and capabilities needed to manage the data Staff not trained to deal with admin or use of hadoop distributions. Landscape is very unsettled, tools are immature...skills on tools (technical and analytical)... Create organizational alignment across boundaries to take action on a more holistic view of customers The ability to incorporate strong change management capabilities will be a critical success factor. 12 www.newvantage.com

People A Key to Success There is a storm approaching on the Big Data front. Tom Davenport While 85% of survey respondents indicated they have a Big Data initiative underway, what is less clear is how firms are organizing to support these initiatives from a business and human resource perspective. When asked their opinion of the biggest obstacles to realizing value from Big Data initiatives, survey respondents referenced talent repeatedly: Lack of knowledge on the possibilities. For many it is still a fancy IT thing. Understanding the grain and nuance of Big Data. Finding people who understand the sources of data and how to analyze and leverage. Chief Information Officers and Chief Technology Officers/Chief Architects led the way with 24% and 17% respectively, but, perhaps more interestingly, 31% chose Other as their response. This answer included the titles of Chief Privacy Officer, Chief Administrative Officer, Head of Marketing, Chief Innovation Officer, and Head of Retail among others. Having a clear understanding and consensus around our business objectives with sufficient clarity in order to action. Painting the business vision of why a whole new approach to data infrastructure is needed to harness the business value from Big Data. Big Data Leadership Challenges Big Data is still in its infancy in many organizations and, for most of those companies, the leadership structure may still be a work in progress. This often results in a lack of clarity around who is driving enterprise Big Data initiatives. When asked, Specifically, who owns or drives the thought leadership for Big Data? [Figure 1], there was a broad range of responses. This covers a broad range of organizational functions and is an indicator of the uncertainty over which groups are, or should be, leading these Big Data initiatives. It also demonstrates the broad scope of Big Data in the enterprise, with initiatives touching almost every division and department within a company. This broad reach means ownership and responsibility for these projects will need to bridge organizational divides and will not likely be the responsibility for any single individual in a company. Clear roles and cooperation across an organization will be critical to success. 13 www.newvantage.com

When asked, Does Thought Leadership on Big Data come from IT or the Rest of the Business? respondents further confirmed this need for cross-functional cooperation and leadership. [Figure 2] Based on our experiences and input from clients, the survey explored how companies are recruiting and developing talent for their Big Data initiatives, and what impact challenges these efforts are having on their productivity and business alignment. Big Data talent is hard to define and difficult to find. We chose four talent areas to ask respondents about: Analytical Skills Data Scientists Big Data IT Professionals Business Leaders While this question offers recognition of the need for cooperation across the organization, when combined with the broad range of functions mentioned as the providers of Thought Leadership around Big Data, it also may indicate there is still uncertainty about where the responsibility for driving these initiatives rests. Organization by line-of-business silos can be critical to ensuring business flexibility and responsiveness to customer and market needs, but it can often present a challenge when it comes to managing shared resources, like data. The complexity of Big Data initiatives means that organizations must give thoughtful consideration to how best to organize around the Big Data function. Analytical Skills One of the primary reasons that organizations cited for investing in Big Data is to improve analytics capabilities and make smarter business decisions. The current state of analytical capabilities was ranked as fair, with 63% ranking those capabilities as adequate or better and 37% calling them less than adequate. Only 6%, of respondents however, considered themselves to be world class. The existence of strong analytic capabilities is viewed as a critical business skill that needs to move to a higher level of performance in organizations. The gap in analytical skills crosses a broad range of positions and levels of seniority across the enterprise. Big Data Talent Just as Big Data holds huge potential for increasing business performance, there is a widespread perception that there exists a talent gap that is creating significant challenges for companies and jeopardizing the likelihood for success of early Big Data initiatives. 14 www.newvantage.com

A similar level of need was shown in the rating of the ability of company leaders to use data and analytics to improve or transform the business. [Figure 3] new breed is a critical ingredient in the wave of Big Data initiatives, finding them is challenging and the survey indicates there will be plenty of competition for their talents. Talent is a critical lynchpin to Big Data success. 70% of the respondents indicated they are hiring or planning to hire Data Scientists. The challenge of finding Data Scientists is daunting. [Figure 5] The perceived lack of confidence in the ability of leadership to leverage the results of detailed analytics efforts, into which Big Data initiatives fall, highlights an additional issue. And while companies are seeking to fill the gap with more analytical skills, the quest will be a challenging one. [Figure 4] Where and how are companies finding Data Scientists? They are looking far and wide, trying to source from academia, Wall Street, Silicon Valley, and industry competitors. [Figure 6] Data Scientists Tom Davenport and D.J. Patil titled their recent Harvard Business Review article, Data Scientist: The Sexiest Job of the 21 st Century. Meet the people who can coax treasure out of messy, unstructured data. This article offers a detailed look at the role of the data scientist and the requisite skills for the position. While this It is also worth noting that when asked, How are you getting Data Scientists skills into your organization? 69% indicated companies indicated they were training existing analytical professionals, but 91% were hiring new people. 15 www.newvantage.com

Big Data IT Professionals Finding individuals with strong data management skills has never been easy. When you include the need for familiarity with the broad range of new technologies that apply to Big Data, it becomes an even more daunting challenge. Only 2% of respondents indicating they have no issues finding skilled resources. [Figure 7] professional services firms with big data expertise, and 31% are using product vendors professional services teams. Business Leaders As was noted earlier, in most organizations there is a perceived gap in the skills of business leaders to use data and analytics to improve or transform the business. Not only is this a current shortcoming in companies, it is a recruiting challenge as well. [Figure 8] Like the search for Data Scientists, 81% of the respondents indicated they were looking to hire new people, but 76% were taking a shot at training existing IT professionals. For this role, 43% of organizations are also seeking the help of 16 www.newvantage.com

Creating a Big Data Environment to Accelerate Business Value Big data is out there. The trick is finding ways to make it work for your company. The ability to accelerate Time-to-Answer (TTA) is key to realizing the value of Big Data initiatives. Adi Ignatius, Editor-in-Chief Harvard Business Review Improve Data-Drive Decision Making When asked to rank the tangible benefits they hope to achieve through Big Data, survey respondents offered a broad range of responses, but most commonly cited the ability to: make better, fact-based decision-making improved customer experience. [Figure 1] Most executives who participated in the survey would be among the first to understand that leveraging Big Data to deliver business value will require a carefully focused strategy that leverages and protects existing data assets, develops new capabilities that are production-ready and reusable, and is capable of managing the deluge of new data that is created every day. Big Data, Analytics, and Organizational Alignment There has been much discussion about the difference between traditional analytics and Big Data, and organizational responsibility for each within an enterprise. This survey suggests the two are becoming closely intertwined and functions must work together to deliver the promised results of Big Data. Breaking down organizational boundaries and creating close integration between IT organizations and the business units is a critical step for any organization hoping to build a winning strategy for Big Data. The promise of improved data-driven decision-making has been consistently identified as a major focus of the organizations that participated in the survey. Data management and analytics have often resided in different parts of the organization. IT departments usually controlled the data and analytics was conducted in either a special group or within a business unit. While 85% of the participating companies have Big Data initiatives underway with the stated reason of improving analytic capabilities and making smarter business decisions, our subsequent briefings highlighted the real quantum leap for companies comes from the ability to accelerate the speed at which they can get to a decision. The survey confirms that organizations understand close integration is necessary. 17 www.newvantage.com

65% of respondents felt that Big Data is an integral part of Data Management, and 68% further felt that Big Data is part of the Advanced Analytics toolbox. [Figure 2 & Figure 3] Whereas the most vaunted business and IT capabilities used to be scalability and scale, the new advantages are based on discovery and agility the ability to mine existing and new data sources continuously for patterns, events and opportunities... This requires a sea change in IT activity with in organizations... As big data evolves, the architecture will develop into an information ecosystem: a network of internal and external services continuously sharing information, optimizing decisions, communicating results and generating new insights for business. Accelerating Time-To-Answer One of the clearest messages from the survey was the desire of companies to make better business decisions, faster. We refer to this critical measure of analytical prowess as Time-to-Answer (TTA). Organizations are using Big Data platforms to answer questions in seconds rather than days, and in days rather than months. Integrating real-time, full analytic capabilities into the business and operating units will enable the type of quick reactions to key business questions and challenges that can build competitive advantage and improve performance. As pointed out by Thomas Davenport, Paul Barth and Randy Bean in their recent MIT Sloan Management Review article, How Big Data is Different, : Accelerating TTA can enable organizations to answer questions that have stubbornly resisted analysis, develop test and learn processes that quickly adapt to the market, and automate complex workflows. It is critical to focus on the question think of Big Question, rather than Big Data. Leaps in TTA may be lost however unless a careful process is followed and the relationship between Big Data and traditional solutions are clearly defined and governed. Coming to terms with big data is prompting organization to rethink their basic assumptions about the relationship between business and IT and their respective roles... The core value of data analysis is to provide answers. The accuracy and speed of those answers are critical to their value. 18 www.newvantage.com

Simplifying Data Engineering In traditional data warehouses, significant effort is spent on data engineering to ensure that all the data is productionworthy before releasing it to users. Before a company can hope to leverage a strategy to improve TTA, it is important to understand the steps involved in preparing to answer a complex business question: 1. Clarify the question and the type of answer needed = build the business case 2. Identify the data required and analysis approach 3. Source the data 4. Cleanse, normalize, and integrate the data 5. Analyze the data 6. Validate the results 7. Present or apply the answer = measure the results These steps are far from a simple, sequential process. Most companies spend 80% of their time on data engineering rather than actually analyzing the data. When asked about the data management functions that are most important, survey respondents highlighted approaches that offered less expensive storage and processing, and improve the quality of data management [Figure 4] Quantifying the Benefits The low price and high capacity of Big Data platforms allow businesses to load all the data from source systems, regardless of whether or not it may be needed for the question at hand. While this may seem wasteful, it eliminates two important delays: writing programs to select just the data needed, and going back to source systems multiple times as new insights generate new questions that need new data. Building traditional data marts and data warehouses is extraordinarily complex and costly. The broad range of open source offerings coupled with flexible, scalable grid computing systems create an environment that not only drives down costs, but also offers the potential of decreasing query times exponentially. Big data platforms - unlike relational databases - allow analysts to organize, clean, and integrate data selectively, ignoring records and fields that are not the current focus of analysis. By deferring full data engineering, big data platforms accelerate TTA during discovery-oriented analysis, and eliminate the engineering effort on data that does not deliver value. A movement away from traditional relational databases is clear. This is by no means abandonment, but the cost of scaling these systems makes Big Data cost prohibitive and doesn t create an environment that can effectively leverage large volumes of disparate data. 19 www.newvantage.com

The focus on Hadoop and Grid is strong, followed closely by appliance and other specialized systems. [Figure 5] Before new data discoveries, organizations must first govern their trusted sources of data. These are the architecture guidelines that should be considered for governing known information: These emerging technologies and methodologies can have a dramatic impact on accelerating analysis and more quickly providing answers to complex business questions, but many products are new and unproven. Organizations must carefully enter this new environment and make sure they possess the requisite skills and are organized to successfully leverage these new platforms to achieve their goals. Understanding the New and the Known A key to sustainable success in the business world is to learn what you do not know. Successful companies constantly challenge their assumptions and learnings of the past by constantly looking for new insights into their customers, markets, products, and risks. This approach pursuing the new while operating on the known is a healthy continuous improvement model. However, it has an important impact on how companies leverage their data and analytics and most do it wrong. Cleansed, mastered, and pre-integrated analytic and operational data Common metrics, models, and BI capabilities Up-to-date business and technical metadata Rigorous change management TTA Accelerators: Standards, scale & high availability Conversely, the new data generated today can be a bit more unruly. Enabling new corporate insights requires organizations to draw on data from sources both internal and external, including social media, government data, service and sales data, and research. Therefore, new discovery must be lightly governed, and include Access to known data & definitions Secure, large workspace for working with external data Rapid profiling, quality, and data integration tools Non-standard analytic routines and data structures Ability to load complete data sets without data modeling TTA Accelerators: Powerful infrastructure, specialized tools 20 www.newvantage.com

The new and the known are not islands; they must be symbiotic systems connected to and feeding each other. New analyses require rapid access to all the known data representing the reality of today s business. Conversely, there must be a disciplined approach to promoting new insights, data, and models to evolve the known. Without this linkage, the systems diverge into incoherence that does not reconcile or scale. Strong governance and the oversight of known data capabilities must coexist with agile data analysis that paves the way for new data discoveries. Emerging technologies and methodologies including Hadoop, Cloudera, database appliances, accelerators and self-learning and genetic algorithms can dramatically reduce TTA. The key to streamlining the time from a corporate question to game-changing business insight is to right-size the approach to analysis: rapid iterations during discovery, and rigorous engineering into production. Enterprises with the capability to create an ebb and flow between dynamic discovery and scalable execution position themselves for sustainable success and dominance over their competitors. 21 www.newvantage.com

Turning Insights into Action Creating an Ecosystem Big Data must be viewed as an ecosystem: capture and create data, clean and organize it, mine business insights from it, and use those insights to drive intelligent business actions. This must be a closed loop that feeds data back into the system to allow companies to use data to test, learn and improves processes. To provide meaningful and actionable insights, the data must be good data. This means there must be established practices for creating and managing high quality enterprise information assets. These include all standard data-management capabilities, such as: data sourcing and integration quality and metadata management data modeling data governance. Insight Capabilities include tools data processes for management reporting advanced analytics. Action Capabilities provision data and business intelligence to applications, business processes, and business partners, and capture responses to interactions. Big Data presents both opportunities and challenges in each of these domains: Data management leverages Big Data technology to eliminate redundancy and provide scalable infrastructure for managing Big Data assets. Insight uses appliances and accelerators, NOSQL technology, and automated analytics to expose new value hidden in big data. Businesses deploy these insights through intelligent agents mediating both internal and external communications and interactions. Organizations must continue to focus on this important data management effort. Big Data enables companies to more effectively deal with a larger volume and wider variety of data, but it does not address or solve issues around the quality of that data. Big Data is not a panacea. The promise of Big Data has been an emerging theme in recent years, yet companies have been trying to leverage data to gain critical insights and help improve their businesses for decades. Some of the tools and capabilities are new, and certainly the economics of accessing and managing data have improved, but many of the challenges remain the same. Big Data presents organizations with new capabilities for driving business value, but realizing the potential will only come with careful formulation of sound strategies accompanied by thoughtful execution plans. Our Executive Survey and resulting discussions with firms that are at the forefront and in the mainstream of corporate Big Data initiatives have highlighted several dominant themes. In conclusion, we offer our final perspectives: An Ecosystem must be created: Focus on the quality and integrity of the data. Bad data is always bad data. Turn insights into action and be prepared to measure the results and refine or modify actions as necessary. Know what question you are asking and why. Big Data offers huge potential for business gains. New technologies are more powerful, yet less costly and there is a real chance to improve decision-making and act more quickly, but it is critical to remember that the path to success will not be simple. It will require careful planning, clear definition of goals, hard work, and a willingness to embrace organizational change. The traditional three V s associated with Big Data Volume, Variety, and Velocity must be expanded for some industries that require a higher degree of accuracy with results. Several companies we have spoken with include Veracity or Validity to carry on the V theme. Regulatory, risk and compliance projects have a miniscule margin of error, as do life science and healthcare projects, while a consumer marketing campaign can tolerate a higher margin of error. Don t focus too much on the Big of Big Data. It s really not about volume. The key is to make better decisions, faster. Sometimes this may mean working with less data, but the right data. Remember there is a distinction between what s going on in the enterprise today and the experience of, and initiatives underway at, companies that were born into Big Data, like Facebook, Google, LinkedIn, ebay, Yahoo, etc. These companies have powerful Big Data efforts underway, but they have never faced the challenge of dealing with older legacy data and systems. 23 www.newvantage.com
