ITNW1392 Special Topics in Computer Systems Networking and Telecommunications COURSE SYLLABUS COURSE NUMBER AND TITLE: ITNW1392 Special Topics in Computer Systems Networking and Telecommunications COURSE (CATALOG) DESCRIPTION: Topics address recently identified current events, skills, knowledge, and/or attitudes and behaviors pertinent to the technology or occupation and relevant to the professional development of the student. This course was designed to be repeated multiple times to improve student proficiency. Voice Over IP (VOIP) Integration B. Software Evaluation for Virtual Cloud C. Virtualization Management In each unit you will be given a lecture/demonstration and then be expected to perform the assignments for each unit. Each assignment will be demonstrated and explained so that you can then attempt it. After each unit there will be a knowledge exam and a performance exam. Each unit is based on the information discussed during the lecture, the reading assignments as well as the lab assignments given. This course is a face to face course that will meet during the stated scheduled hours for lecture and laboratory. All unit assignments are due the class prior to each unit exam. Lecture slides and lab assignments are available in Moodle. Lab assignments build on prior assignments, for this reason labs must be completed in sequence. LEARNING OUTCOMES: Student Learning Objectives for ITNW 1392 At the end of this course the student will have demonstrated the ability to: A. Voice Over IP (VOIP) Integration 1. Describe VoIP, components of a VoIP network, VoIP and signaling protocols, special requirements for VoIP calls, and Codecs. 2. Implement a VoIP system using soft phones, standard analog phones, and/or IP Phones. 3. Define and implement a dial plan on a voice gateway. 4. Configure routers. switches and servers in support of VOIP.
5. Use a network protocol analyzer to capture and display VoIP packets for analysis and troubleshooting. 6. Prepare integration plan for new processes, protocols and equipment 7. Perform network fault management 8. Prepare capacity and throughput plan for use with VOIP implementation 9. Troubleshoot and maintain client, server and network systems B. Software Evaluation for Virtual Cloud 1. Plan and document system configuration based on customer needs assessment 2. Support, track and document change implementation for the software select to meet customer business need 3. Make recommendations for system optimization, improvement and security C. Virtual Management 1. Prepare integration plan for new processes, protocols and equipment with emphasis on network health 2. Prepare capacity and throughout plan 3. Manage inventory 4. Manage and implement contingency and emergency recovery plans 5. Develop maintenance and upgrade plans 6. Instructional/Evaluation Methodology Students work in teams to develop and test a possible virtualization management solution to address management s request. Students demonstrate their team s recommendations to the management team (dept. instructors). Students will complete a self assessment of their group performance via a survey, which is used for feed back and individual scoring. Student select several cloud based application to meet different client communication needs. Students oral presentation to the client (instructor) with includes a mini introduction and training session for the client s evaluation. Scoring rubic is
used to calculate student score. DUE DATES: All unit lab assignments are due the class period prior to unit exams, it is the student s responsibility to review moodle online course calendar and notification for important dates and announcements. Labs must be completed in sequential order; lab content builds upon the prior lab. Assignments will not be accepted after the due date, and a grade of zero (0) will result. It is the responsibility of the student to find time outside of class to make up any missed lab time; hand on labs must be completed in the classroom b. The Instructor must give permission before taking photos in class. Eating and drinking is prohibited in classrooms and laboratories. Cheating and/or copying will earn a grade of zero (0) for all parties involved. Cheating and/or copying are determined by the Instructor, usually with the concurrence of another Instructor. You may appeal your grade, by making an appointment with the Program Chair. No downloading of games or software is allowed, and no game playing on lab computers.
