WINDOWS 8/HARDWARE SIG MEETING NOTES Date of meeting: November 7, 2012 SIG leader: George Harding Location: Pima County Medical Society FIVE-MINUTE SECURITY TECHNIQUES: USING "ENCRYPTING FILE SYSTEM" (EFS) TO PROTECT DATA FILES AND FOLDERS IN A "WINDOWS.." COMPUTER Five-Minute Security Techniques Demo #2 by Karl Odgers: Remember how the cassette tape would go up in smoke and self-destruct after it is played at the beginning of each episode of the "Mission: Impossible" television serial? Now, you can approximately do this digitally for e-mail messages that you send: Using the free http://oneshar.es Web-based service, you can send secure e- Mail messages that self-destruct after the recipient views them OR after a designated period of time if the recipient does not view them. See PCWorld's article entitled Send Sensitive Information by Email
A second Web-based service is https://privnote.com. This Web service adds the capability of receiving a return email that notifies you that the sent email has been opened. Unlike "oneshar.es", "privnote.com" does not let you send a self-destruct time if the recipient does not read the e-mail messages. The actual usage of these two services should be straightforward, but if you are still not sure also see http://howto.cnet.com/8301-11310_39-57377686-285/this-e-mail-will-selfdestruct..--heres-how/ Additionally, the FAQ of "Privnote" is well worth close reading for background information and overview on the why and how of encryption. Also the privacy notice, #9, should be noted and evaluated. The comment section of the abovementioned CNET article could also be read to help your evaluation of your security needs.
Lastly, your security will be increased if you send information in 2 or more separate emails or use 2 or more channels of communication, i.e. telephone. INSTALLING A OCZ SOLID STATE DRIVE (SSD) INTO AN imicro EXTERNAL HARD DRIVE ENCLOSURE Robert Thompson brought in an OCZ Vertex Plus R2 Solid State Drive (SSD) and an imicro IM25COM-BK hard drive enclosure. Francis installed the SSD into the enclosure. Due to time constraints, Francis will install a bootable "Windows To Go" image of "Windows 8 Enterprise Evaluation 64-bit" onto this hard drive and then return it to Robert. The net result is that Robert will be able to use this SSD to non-destructively boot up any of his laptop or desktop and run "Windows 8 Enterprise Evaluation".
Making "Windows To Go" Bootable USB Flash Drives and USB External Hard Disk Drives for Non-Destructively Booting Up Computers with "Windows 8 Enterprise Evaluation" For USB 2 or USB 3 external hard drives, use the "Windows To Go" icon inside the "Control Panel" of a real or virtual computer that is running the 32-bit or 64-bit version of "Windows 8 Enterprise Evaluation". For USB 3 flash drive devices that emulate a hard drive, use the "Windows To Go" icon inside the "Control Panel" of a real or virtual computer that is running the 32-bit or 64-bit version of "Windows 8 Enterprise Evaluation". For USB 3 flash drive devices that do NOT emulate a hard drive and for USB 2 flash drive devices, do the following from inside a computer that is running any version of "Windows 7", or "Windows 8": Run the diskpart, imagex.exe, and bcdboot commands, as described in http://tweaks.com/windows/52279/how-to-create-a-windows-to-go-usb-drive/ or http://www.aidanfinn.com/?p=12119 Warning: "Windows To Go" will run much slower in USB 2 flash drives and USB 2 external hard disk drives compared to USB 3 flash drives and USB 3 external hard disk drives. Warning: When running "Windows To Go" with "Windows 8 Enterprise Evaluation", you CANNOT remove the USB flash drive or USB external hard drive while the computer is powered on: Wait until the computer is totally powered off before pulling out the USB flash drive or USB external hard drive.
"WINDOWS XP HOME" RUNNING IN A VIRTUAL MACHINE RUNNING INSIDE "VMWARE PLAYER 5" IN A "WINDOWS 8 PRO" HOST COMPUTER For the above-mentioned security techniques presentation, Karl Odgers used a "Windows XP Home" virtual machine. This "Windows XP Home" virtual machine resides inside "VMware Player 5" in a "Windows 8.." host computer. The recently-released version 5 of "VMware Player" is fully compatible with "Windows 8.." host computers. *
"WINDOWS 7.." RUNNING IN A VIRTUAL MACHINE RUNNING INSIDE "VMWARE PLAYER 5" IN A "WINDOWS 8 PRO" HOST COMPUTER Francis used a "Windows 7 Enterprise Evaluation" virtual machine to demonstrate various features of "Windows 7..". This "Windows 7.." virtual machine resides inside "VMware Player 5" in a "Windows 8.." host computer.
"WINDOWS 8 PRO", "WINDOWS 8 PRO PACK", AND "WINDOWS 8" COMPUTERS AT A TUCSON "COSTCO" STORE! Francis showed photos of "Windows 8.." software and computers being sold at a local "Costco" store:
