The heel of a cowboy boot was developed to prevent a rider s foot from slipping through the stirrup when working on horseback, which could cause the cowboy to be dragged in the event he became unseated or fell from the horse. Today, cowboy boot heels have evolved into many styles, each with a different function. The original, classic cowboy boot toe was one that tapered and often rounded, allowing the cowboy to easily slip his foot in and out of the stirrups. Through time, the style of toe preferred has changed and varies by region. Today, Tony Lama offers a wide range of toe profiles, from the broad square toe to the fashion snip toe. The traditional cowboy heel (#4) is a tall, under slung heel that is also commonly known as a riding heel. The walking heel (#7), while similarly styled, has a slightly lower heel height. Over the years, the modern roper heel (#23) was created to meet the needs of rodeo cowboys, particularly those involved in calf roping. In an event that requires the competitor to rope a calf from their horse before dismounting, running to, and tying the calf, the lower, squared-off heel made running easier.
