Palacio de Comunicaciones Courtyard Roof, Madrid Type of structure: Freeform glazed grid shell Owner/Client: City of Madrid Expected completion 2007 Scope of SBP work is the conceptual design, detailed design Architect: Arquimatica, Madrid Dimensions of the roof 100 x 45 m Height approx. 8 m Roof surface 2800 m² The free-formed glass roof covers the Courtyard of the Palacio de Comunicaciones in Madrid. The building used to be the main post office of Madrid and will now be the new town hall of the City of Madrid. Due to the irregular layout of the courtyard a triangular mesh solution for the roof was the most suitable approach and using the idea of the hanging structures. The horizontal cable net that braces the edge beam takes all horizontal reactions of the roof. As a result, mainly vertical reactions are transmitted into the old building. LANIK, San Sebastian
Swimming Stadium Balcon al Mar Valencia Type of structure: 2-layer, insulated membrane roof supported by grid shells Owner/Client: AUMSA / Ajuntament de Valencia Expected completion 2007 Scope of SBP work is the conceptual design, detailed design Architect: Areas Ingenieria Y Architectura S.L., Valencia Roof over Swimming Pool - 99 m x 67m Roof Surface approx. 6.000 m² Roof over Diving Pool 38m x 67m The two pools at the new swimming complex in Valencia are to be spanned by grid shells. The covering of the grid shell is achieved by a double-shelled roof construction. This consists of two layers of PTFE fibreglass membrane, with a layer of transparent thermal insulation in the space between. Every second arch of the primary construction is elevated. Valley cables run between these arches, giving the outer membrane (PTFE glass) its folded appearance.
