Training Positions Guide Nationwide General and Acute Care Medicine Advanced Training TASMANIA Launceston General Hospital The Launceston General Hospital is a 350 bed teaching hospital with excellent opportunities to undertake advanced training in general medicine. This includes regular outpatient clinics, access to time in procedural specialties and teaching opportunities in an undergraduate and post graduate forum linked with the University of Tasmania incorporating the Northern Clinical School. There is an opportunity for rotation into the private sector at the hospitals run by Calvary Health Care Tasmania, Launceston. This role is most suited to trainees nearing the end of their training who wish to develop more autonomy, experience medicine in the private sector and develop their peri-operative medicine skills. The Launceston General Hospital has a fully operational 28 bed Acute Medical Unit which directly interfaces with the Department of Emergency Medicine and also the adjacent Medical Day Procedure and Diagnostic suites. The Department of Medicine has a strong research culture with many physicians and trainees undertaking clinical research with affiliation with the Clifford Craig Medical Research Trust. The Advanced Training program offers rotations to an Acute Medical Unit, Stroke Unit, Cardiology, Nephrology, Rehabilitation and rotations to the trainees chosen sub-specialty. The roles are structured to provide exposure to inpatient, outpatient, teaching and professional development sessions. We also have a senior registrar position which allows flexibility for a trainee in their final year of AT or fellowship year. The program includes relocation and rental assistance for candidates moving to Hobart as well as support to attend one international and one national professional development event annually. Nationwide RACP Advanced Trainee Selection & Matching (ATSM) Service What is the Advanced Trainee Selection and Matching (ATSM) Service? The ATSM Service is provided by the RACP to help trainees secure an Advanced Training position with an accredited training hospital or health service. Trainees who have secured a position will still need to apply for Advanced Training before they can start their training. General Medicine Advanced Training QUEENSLAND In Queensland all general medicine advanced training positions are managed through the General Medicine Advanced Training Pathway. The pathway provides a streamlined and consistent process for the selection and allocation of general medicine advanced trainees across the state. Nationwide Neurology Training - Australia The Australian and New Zealand Association of Neurologists (ANZAN) coordinates recruitment and appointment of neurology trainees throughout Australia. Centralised interviews are conducted in each state on the same day. Below is a list of hospitals with accredited core training positions. Neurology training comprises two core years and one elective year of accredited training. Training Positions Guide Australian Capital Territory The Canberra Hospital Paediatrics & Child Health Registrar Positions for Basic and Advanced Trainees in 2016 The Canberra Hospital is accredited for: 2 years of Basic training in Paediatrics, including Paediatric Surgery, Paediatric ED and Neonatology 2 years of Advanced Paediatric training in general paediatrics. 6 months Rural/Regional training for Advanced Paediatric trainees 6 months Developmental/ Community Training for Advanced Trainees; including involvement with ACT Child at Risk Unit. Applications are invited for Advanced and Basic Trainee Registrars in Paediatric. The period of employment will be from 1st February 2016 for 12 months, with a view to extension. All hospital terms are in general paediatrics with sub specialty interests. All positions include after hours commitments:-night duty, weekends and relief. Canberra Hospital is the major teaching hospital for the ACT and surrounding regions and is affiliated with the Australian National University Clinical School. The Department of Paediatrics and Child Health is co-located within the new Centenary Hospital for Women and Children and is the principal centre for children s medical and surgical services in the ACT. There is a large inpatient department incorporating General and subspeciality Paediatrics, Paediatric Surgery and Adolescent Medicine. The paediatric outpatient department reflects current out-patient/ambulatory models of care and will give trainees broad exposure to a range of general and subspeciality Paediatrics, including Endocrinology, Nephrology, Respiratory and Sleep Medicine. The ability to attend other visiting subspecialty clinics is readily available. The department also provides an innovative teaching program for students from the Australian National University Medical School which will facilitate medical teaching experience in appointed trainees. Selection criteria: Essential: Registered or eligible to register with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency Excellent communication skills and demonstrated ability to engage and liaise effectively with other health professionals Demonstrated commitment to further education and professional development Basic computer skills Desirable: FRACP Written and Clinical Examinations (required for General Medical Fellow and Advanced Trainee Applicants) Advanced Paediatric Life Support or equivalent Experience in Research and Quality Assurance activities General Medical Fellow Paediatrics & Child Health A General Medical Fellow position in Paediatrics at The Canberra Hospital will be offered for the 2016 clinical year. The fellow is appointed via the Sydney Childrens Hospital Network with interview being held in Sydney. Applications via NSW Health JMO recruitment portal. The Fellow position incorporates three roles: leadership, education, and clinical. Leadership is a particular emphasis with supervision and clinical guidance for registrars and residents. The education role includes the organisation and oversight of educational programs for junior medical staff including the Sydney Childrens Hospital Network lectures series, journal club, and Paediatric Grand Rounds. The successful candidate is encouraged to pursue their clinical interests with clinics in general paedatrics, endocrinology and diabetes, nephrology and respiratory medicine available. Outreach clinics may form a component of the position. Participation in a well-supported on-call consultant roster is expected. ACT General and Acute Care Medicine Advanced Training Nationwide The Canberra Hospital is a 550-bed tertiary level teaching hospital with exciting opportunities to undertake advanced training in General Medicine. There are 4-6 General Medicine advanced trainee positions offered at Canberra Hospital with interesting, busy rotations available in acute and general medicine and ambulatory care. Advanced trainees will gain experience in in-patient medicine, general medicine and sub-specialty outpatient clinics, conducting research and quality improvement projects and taking leadership positions on committees and in education forums. There is a strong and vibrant ACT physician community with numerous hospital-wide and Unit-specific educational events open to trainees. All medical specialties are represented at Canberra Hospital and there is scope for training in sub-specialty areas in subsequent years. The Rehabilitation, Aged and Continuing Care Service, ACT Health provides integrated aged care services to the ACT region and registrars have the opportunity to complete core rotations in acute geriatrics with a subacute component, a dedicated ortho-geriatrics service, and the community aged care service. The community registrar rotation was developed as a distinct teaching rotation under the expanded specialist training program funded by the Commonwealth Department of Health & Ageing. A strong presence within the ANU medical school faculty provides trainees with the opportunity to participate in the graduate teaching program and ensures an adequate framework exists for research. New South Wales Liverpool Hospital Available from January 2016 Liverpool Hospital is a 885 bed teaching hospital in South Western Sydney, one of the fastest growing regions in the metropolitan area, which offers excellent and exciting opportunities to undertake training in Geriatric Medicine. The Department of Geriatric Medicine at Liverpool Hospital is fully accredited for advanced training with the Royal Australasian College of Physicians for two years core training for up to four advanced trainees. Our department provides complete core rotations in acute geriatric inpatients, orthogeriatrics, psychogeriatrics (at Braeside Hospital) and domiciliary visits. General geriatric clinics provide exposure for comprehensive geriatric assessment for a wide range of patients with cognitive and mobility issues. There is a structured teaching program which includes regular education programs based on the curriculum and journal clubs. Royal Darwin Hospital The Royal Darwin Hospital is a level three teaching hospital. It has approximately 300 beds and is located in Tiwi, a northern suburb of Darwin overlooking the Timor Sea. The hospital has an active and successful basic physician training programme and many opportunities to undertake advanced training across a range of specialties. It serves a huge geographical area of North Queensland and the Cape including the TSI and Northwest Queensland. With a population of > 250,000 including 60,000+ Indigenous peoples, trainees may expect exposure to the breadth of subspecialties and also the broadest range of pathology: not only acute and chronic medical problems as encountered in any major city, but also tropical diseases, Indigenous Health issues, and pathology seen by our nearest neighbours in PNG and SE Asia. Training Positions Guide South Australia Southern Adelaide Local Health Network Basic Training and Advanced Training Southern Adelaide Local Health Network (SALHN) provides a range of acute and sub-acute health services for people of all ages and has three acute sites: Flinders Medical Centre, Noarlunga Hospital and Repatriation General Hospital. Flinders Medical Centre is a 566-bed specialist referral public teaching hospital collocated with the Flinders University School of Medicine and the privately owned Flinders Private Hospital. Training Positions Guide Royal Children s Hospital Centre for Adolescent Health For the 2016 clinical year there are two Adolescent Medicine Fellow training positions on offer at the Centre for Adolescent Health, Royal Children s Hospital, Melbourne. These are clinically focused training positions which satisfy the requirements for developmental and psychosocial training and are a fascinating opportunity, with a mix of clinical service, project and liaison responsibilities. They are ideal both for trainees wanting to pursue a career in adolescent medicine and for those pursuing a general or subspecialty path but wanting some extra expertise with adolescents. The positions are essentially the same and the clinical case load is mixed and varied with complex medical and psychosocial presentations. Bay of Plenty District Health Board Tauranga Hospital Internal Medicine and Paediatrics The setting The Bay of Plenty, situated on the east coast of the North Island, offers vast golden sand beaches, bush clad mountains, lush farmlands and more. We are one of the fastest growing DHBs in NZ with a population currently around 215,000. Hospital care is provided from two hospitals based in Tauranga and Whakatane. Currently only Tauranga Hospital is accredited for training. It is a level 2 Hospital with 349 beds and offers a full range of secondary care as well as a growing list of speciality services. In addition the Bay of Plenty Clinical School takes medical students from Auckland Medical School in their 4th and 5th years as well as Trainee Interns in a number of clinical areas. The school has an active Clinical Trials Unit and research agenda. Adult Medicine The Department of Medicine at Tauranga Hospital consists of 28 consultants working across Acute General Medicine, Cardiology, Respiratory Medicine, Gastroenterology, Endocrinology, Rheumatology, Infectious Diseases, Neurology, Oncology, Health in Ageing, Haematology and Palliative Care. There are 22 registrar positions, 2 of which are dedicated positions for Advanced Trainees in Cardiology and Gastroenterology. There are options for time to be recognised for Advanced Training within other specialities and these are considered on application. The remaining positions can be filled with Advanced or Basic Trainees with full accreditation for Basic Training and for 12 months in General Medicine for Advanced Training. Trainees are exposed to a wide variety of medical cases and a comprehensive teaching programme runs throughout the year. Trainees rotate through all specialities with Basic Trainees given priority in their choice of runs over nontraining registrars. Paediatrics The Paediatric Department offers 4-5 registrar positions for Paediatric basic trainees and 2 Advanced Trainee positions (for 6-12 months each). All trainees are fully supervised and expected to fulfil RACP criteria for Basic or Advanced training. It is a busy supportive department of 10 senior clinicians and provides an excellent opportunity to gain first-hand experience, at junior and senior levels, to a wide range of paediatric cases, including management of emergencies in the ED setting, resuscitation and care of newborn and premature infants (usually > 32 weeks), ward acute and chronic cases and OPD clinics (registrar run with consultant back up). There is a wide range of daily teaching sessions including APLS scenario teaching, dedicated SHO teaching, Paediatric Radiology session, paediatric journal club and videoconference links to Starship (tertiary referral Hospital, Auckland) teaching sessions. All registrars are expected to attend visiting Starship subspeciality clinics. All registrar positions run from December to December, although positions do come up throughout the year. Capital and Coast District Health Board Wellington Region Wellington Hospital is a large tertiary referral teaching hospital, located centrally in the heart of Wellington city. Medical registrars are based in Wellington with rotations through Kenepuru Hospital (a level 1 hospital, 20 minutes north of Wellington) and Hutt Hospital (a level 2 hospital, 30 minutes drive north from Wellington). All subspecialties are offered across the hospital sites. Trainees rotate across the sites to gain experience of working in different environments. Basic Trainees Wellington, Hutt Valley and Wairarapa hospitals provide an excellent environment for basic physician training with rotations available in general medicine, and in subspecialties, including General Medicine; Infectious Diseases; Endocrine; Cardiology; Gastroenterology; Blood and Cancer; Neurology; Renal; Respiratory; AT &R; Geriatrics and Rheumatology. Registrars intending to sit the FRACP exam will find a comprehensive and coordinated training programme, with weekly exam-focussed tutorials and guidance from both senior registrars and consultants. A mock written and clinical exam is organised, along with weekly short case teaching and a long case. Wellington and Hutt hospitals have a consistent record of exam success, and a very high pass rate for the written examination. Two years of advanced training in Wellington will allow you the chance to become part of a Tertiary team, complete your training requirements with the necessary exposure to Cardiac Surgery, Electrophysiology and Intervention. The General Medical service has four dedicated advanced training positions which allow the trainee to choose any combination of subspecialty clinics to combine with acute ward-based general medicine, supported by a basic trainee medical registrar and house officers. Time is available for research and audit activity. The hospitals have a strong relationship with the University of Otago, and trainees also provide teaching for medical students and junior doctors. All trainees are strongly encouraged to attend relevant conferences and courses, and leave is provided for this purpose. The NICU at Christchurch Women s Hospital is a Level Three unit, has ten Level Three cots, twenty eight Level Two cots, and a number of Level One cots. Christchurch provides all tertiary level Neonatal surgery for the South Island of New Zealand, except for major heart surgery. The Children s Oncology and Haematology Service provides tertiary level care for the South Island and lower part of the North Island, with all aspects of treatment being performed in Christchurch except for bone marrow transplantation. Trainees receive exposure to a broad range of general nephrology, dialysis and transplantation.
