ORACLE DATA SHEET BACKUP AND RECOVERY FOR ORACLE ENGINEERED SYSTEMS WITH ORACLE'S SUN ZFS BACKUP APPLIANCE COST-EFFECTIVE DATA PROTECTION FOR ORACLE ENGINEERED SYSTEMS FEATURES Current support for Oracle Exadata backup Native QDR InfiniBand and 10 Gb Ethernet connectivity Advanced, intuitive management tools Real-time analysis and diagnosis of performance Data compression High-performance NAS storage appliance BENEFITS Superior performance 20 TB/hour backup and 9.4 TB/hour restore throughputs Cost effectiveness lower TCO than comparable NAS storage systems Simplified management easy-to- use management interface Reduced risk end-to-end checksumming and fault management architecture Oracle s Sun ZFS Backup Appliance provides an integrated highperformance backup solution for Oracle engineered systems that reduces backup and recovery time objectives by more than half compared to competitive engineered systems backup solutions. The Sun ZFS Backup Appliance, a CostEffective Platform for Disaster Recovery Ever-growing amounts of data present system and database administrators with a number of challenges the thorniest of which are associated with the complex process of backup and recovery. Besides growing in size, today s databases must meet stringent data protection requirements a task made more difficult by the significant failure rate of backup and recovery. According to a 2008 report from the Enterprise Strategy Group (ESG), one out of every seven backups and one out of every six recoveries fail. Without reliable data protection and processes, mission-critical data is at risk. The Sun ZFS Backup Appliance is a tested, validated and supported backup appliance specifically tuned for Oracle engineered systems backup and recovery. The Sun ZFS Backup Appliance has extremely fast backup and restore throughputs, ensuring that backup windows and recovery time objectives (RTOs) are met by providing timely recovery in the event of a disaster. The Sun ZFS Backup Appliance is easily integrated with Oracle Exadata systems. Licensefree data services, including snapshot and compression, drive down capital and operational costs. With the Sun ZFS Backup Appliance snapshot and cloning capabilities, database backups can be used more for value-added work and provide system administrators with additional recovery options. For example, snapshot deployment of database clones provide development, quality assurance (QA), and other organizations with up-to-date copies of production data, and these additional copies add yet another safeguard in the unlikely event of an outage. High Bandwidth InfiniBand Connectivity Oracle is leading the way with native high-bandwidth InfiniBand interconnects. The QDR InfiniBand fabric provides high bandwidth between the Oracle Exadata database servers, storage cells, and the Sun ZFS Backup Appliance. Backup and restore operations can be automatically parallelized across all database nodes, Oracle Exadata storage cells, Sun ZFS Backup Appliance channels, and controllers. This significantly reduces backup and RTOs compared to traditional NAS storage systems.
Superior Performance Because of its high bandwidth interconnects and superior processing power, the ZFS Backup Appliance is nearly 7 times faster at Oracle Exadata backup and at least 1.6 times faster at Oracle Exadata recovery compared to competitive engineered systems backup solutions. Testing has shown that Oracle Exadata in a Half Rack configuration with a performance model Sun ZFS Backup Appliance demonstrated NFS-based backup performance over InfiniBand at a data rate of 20 TB/hr, and a restore rate of 9.4 TB/hr. The backup rate is fast enough to completely back up an Oracle Exadata Database Machine X2-2 in a Half Rack configuration in less than 1.2 hours, or an Oracle Exadata Database Machine X2-2 in a Full Rack configuration in 2.25 hours. Like Oracle Exadata, the Sun ZFS Backup Appliance is a scalable architecture. By adding additional capacity, the Sun ZFS Backup Appliance can currently support capacities up to 1.7 PB while maintaining balanced system performance. Cost Effectiveness Because the Sun ZFS Backup Appliance connects directly to Oracle Exadata's internally managed InfiniBand network, there is no need for a media server and the associated software licenses used in traditional backup architectures (without tape). This needless extra hardware, software, and support can add significantly to TCO compared to a direct Sun ZFS Backup Appliance solution. And with the Sun ZFS Backup Appliance, a rich set of data services are included with the system. Replication and cloning are available at additional cost. With Sun ZFS Backup Appliance, you can achieve significantly lower TCO than EMC and NetApp. Lower TCO means that you can afford more backup capacity than you can with competing products. Simplified Management Thanks to the groundbreaking intuitive user interface provided by Sun ZFS Backup Appliance, enterprises can reduce administration time by more than 30 percent, making it the preferred platform for Oracle Database backup and recovery. Provisioning and management is dramatically simplified with the Sun ZFS Backup Appliance with an easy-to-use management interface that takes the guesswork out of system installation, configuration, and tuning. In addition, the built-in suite of software data services and communication protocols eliminates add-on software evaluation and procurement challenges. Oracle s DTrace Analytics provides unparalleled visibility for administrators to monitor vital system parameters that can affect backup and recovery of Oracle Exadata 2 environments. Performance bottlenecks and other issues can be pinpointed and resolved faster than ever before thus minimizing adverse RTO, recovery point objective (RPO), and service-level agreement (SLA) impacts. Reduced Risk Sun ZFS Backup Appliance provides data integrity features that reduce risk of lost or corrupt data. End-to-end checksumming constantly reads and checks data to ensure that it s correct. Predictive self-healing capabilities maximize system availability by automatically diagnosing, isolating, and recovering from faults. For example, Oracle s fault management architecture detects and diagnoses underlying problems using an extensible set of agents. When a faulty component is discovered, self-healing features automatically take the faulty component offline. The system also provides concise diagnostic messages that link to Oracle s knowledgebase, guiding administrators through corrective tasks when human intervention is required. And industry-leading triple-parity RAID further reduces the risk of data loss. Remote replication is available at an extra charge to facilitate disaster recovery processes. The Sun ZFS Backup Appliance can replicate an Oracle Exadata backup set or image copy to another Sun ZFS Backup Appliance to ensure protection from a complete loss of the primary 2
site. Clustered controllers ensure access to data is not compromised during maintenance operations or the unlikely event of a complete head failure. Oracle Recovery Manager Oracle Recovery Manager (RMAN), a command-line and Oracle Enterprise Manager based tool, is the preferred method for efficient backup and recovery of your Oracle Database. Oracle RMAN provides block-level corruption detection during backup and restore. In addition, Oracle RMAN optimizes performance and space consumption during backup with file multiplexing and backup set compression, and it integrates with Oracle Secure Backup and third-party media management products for tape backup. A Range of Configurations To meet a variety of capacity, price, and performance needs, Oracle s Sun ZFS Backup Appliance is available in two configurations: Sun ZFS Backup Appliance HP performance configuration and Sun ZFS Backup Appliance HC capacity configuration. Ranging in capacity from 55 TB raw to 132 TB raw and scalable to 1.7 PB, these systems ensure that you have sufficient hardware to meet current needs, and that you can incrementally upgrade as your business grows.
