Starting in 2016, the Big Sky Conference Men s and Women s Basketball Championships will be played downtown at the Reno Events Center. The REC was constructed in 2005 and can accommodate roughly 5,000 fans in a basketball configuration. All 12 men s and all 12 women s teams from the conference will participate in the championship. The Big Sky Conference championships will take place March 7 through the 12. All games, except the men s basketball final, will be streamed live on WatchBigSky.com. This was an exhaustive process, said Big Sky Conference Commissioner Doug Fullerton. Reno, as a city, and the folks that we worked with did a spectacular job in representing their community. We re extremely excited about going to Reno for our championships. I used to travel to Reno often, and one thing that always impressed me about the community is it s a lot like the communities we have in the Big Sky. It s a very similar feel. I know we re going to be welcomed. The coaches and the fans attending are going to feel very good about coming to Reno. Moving to a predetermined, neutral site for its men s and women s basketball championships ends more than two decades of the Big Sky Conference awarding its conference tournament to the regular-season champion. The league has also limited the number of participants in the championship. In 2015, the top eight men s and women s teams qualified. The Big Sky Conference announced in 2014 that it would accept bids from cities interested in hosting the tournaments. Seven communities submitted bids to host either the men s or women s tournaments, or both. Five finalists were selected by a committee comprised of a university president, two athletics directors, a senior woman administrator, a faculty athletic representative and an outside consultant. The committee toured each city and venue in February and March, and then forwarded a recommendation to conference administrators and university presidents. #RoadToReno PLAYER OF THE WEEK OGDEN, Utah (December 21, 2015) Eastern Washington s Felix Von Hofe was named the Big Sky Conference Men s Basketball Player of the Week for games played December 14 through December 20. This is Von Hofe s first Big Sky weekly honor and the first for an Eagle this season. 2015-16 Players of the Week Date Name School 11/17 Marcus Graves SAC 11/24 Marcus Colbert MSU 12/1 Jeremy Senglin WSU Felix Von Hofe Eastern Washington Junior Guard Melbourne, Australia Von Hofe, a junior from Melbourne, Australia, eclipsed his career high in each of the last two games, finishing with 28 in a huge 74-58 road win at Denver on Sunday. The junior went 9-of-18 from the field and 8-of-14 from behind the arc against the Pioneers. EWU trailed early at Denver, but Felix Von Hofe scored 16 points in a 19-7 run in the first half to give EWU the lead for good at 30-23. The Eagles closed the half with an 8-0 run, then scored six of the first seven points of the second half to take a 49-33 lead. Eastern led by no less than eight the rest of the way. Obviously, Felix was really special, said Eastern head coach Jim Hayford. He s a great shooter and it s hard to take away his shot because he s so tall and his release point is so high. He scored 27 points on 10-of-16 from the field in Monday s loss at Western Carolina. Five of the junior s field goals came from behind the arc. He also pulled down six boards against the Catamounts, which was two shy of a new career-best. Von Hofe is averaging 15.9 points per game this season, and ranks 10th in NCAA Division I in 3-pointers per game (3.64) and is 25th in 3-point shooting percentage (.465). Others nominated: Drick Bernstine North Dakota; Tyler Hall Montana State; Joel Bolomboy Weber State; Anthony Johnson Northern Colorado; Jake Straughan Idaho; Calaen Robinson Portland State; Martin Breunig - Montana Other Top Perfomances Joel Bolomboy (WSU) - Joel had 18 points and 17 rebounds in Friday s overtime win over Portland, Weber State s only game of the week. He was 6-of-8 from the field and knocked down a 3-pointer. It was his 10th double-double in 11 games this season, which is the most double-doubles of any player in the country this season. Bolomboy is averaging 17.1 points per game and ranks fourth in the nation in rebounding at 12.6 per game. He is also sixth in the Big Sky in field goal percentage at 57.7 percent. Bolomboy continues to move up the career record lists at Weber State. He now needs 108 more rebounds to pass Willie Sojourner as Weber State s career leader and needs 112 more rebounds to become the Big Sky s all-time leader. Bolomboy is also now 20th in scoring in WSU history with 1,107 career points and is fourth in career free throws attempted. He is already Weber State s career leader in blocked shots, now with 151 in his career. Anthony Johnson (UNC) - Scored a career-high 27 points and added four rebounds in a loss to Denver. Johnson was electric on the night, shooting 75.0% (9-of-12) from the field and 66.7% (4- of-6) from three-point range. Drick Bernstine (UND) - Bernstine registered his first career double-double and scored a career-high 20 points to lead North Dakota to an 80-59 victory over Valley City State on Thursday. Bernstine finished 9-for-13 from the floor and tallied his third-straight game with double-figure rebounds by pulling down 10 in the victory over the Vikings. Bernstine broke out of a field-goal slump that saw him match his total makes from the previous seven games (9-for-43). 12/8 Justin Strings SAC 12/14 Perrion Callandret UI 12/21 Felix Von Hofe EWU Big Sky Preseason Polls Coaches Poll Team Points 1.
