DRAFT VALENCIA COLLEGE CO-CURRICULAR EXPERIENCE Valencia expects every First Time in College and Transfer student entering Valencia as a degreeseeking student to engage in meaningful, co-curricular experiences that connect to New Student Learning Outcomes. The co-curricular activities will allow students to discover, create, and reinforce their academic pathways. Students are strongly encouraged to engage in the cocurricular program prior to their 30 th credit hour. There are currently 11 potential certificates the students can choose from when they enter Valencia. The components listed connect students with Place, Purpose, Pathway, Personal Connection, Plan, and Preparation (6 P s). Students must complete a designated certificate prior to their 30 th hour in order to register for the succeeding term. Once students complete the certificate they will earn a designation on their transcript, a certificate of achievement for their portfolio, and a cord at graduation. REACH, Honors, and Bridges are considered their own certificate programs. Students in these programs are eligible for participating in other certificates. The RoadMap Certificate allows students to create a Certificate of their own in consultation with an Advisor or Counselor. The student and advisor will select at least 5 components from different tracks to meet the individual needs of the student. Most Certificates will align with a Meta-major so students pursuing a particular career area can validate their choice through their co-curricular experience. Part-time and Online students will be able to engage in the Certificate programs. Some online students may be limited to certain programs but they will have the opportunity to participate. Online students can engage in online activities. Online co-curricular programs are already available through the Career Center, the Library and the Writing Center. Additional activities will be developed for these students. SUGGESTED CERTIFICATE PROGRAMS Academic/ Co-curricular Involvement Certificate Component #1: Assessment- Students will be able to assess the current state of their academic involvement and identify areas of improvement to maximize their college experience Collaboration: Students will learn to partner with academic advising and consistently refer other students to meet with an advisor and expand on their educational plans Development of Assessment Plan: Students will learn to create and follow an assessment plan specific to their academic goals Implementation: Students will engage in activities designed to implement assessment strategies that they have created Component #2: Integration- Students will be able integrate co-curricular learning s and experiences with academic experience in order to transform the student in becoming well rounded and community oriented

Execution: Design and deliver workshops and seminars on effective study skills, time management and other critical areas to achieve academic success Cooperation: Students will work with other departments to support improvements to cocurricular activities and other learning based programs Synthesis: Students will engage in activities that will result in advanced accomplishment across their generalized and specialized studies Component #3: Academic Success- Students will examine learning techniques and resources available in order to assure students academic success Progression: Students will develop skills that encourage them to continue their education and pursue a Bachelor s degree Partnership: Students will partner with state universities in order to raise awareness of benefits associated with continuing education Retention: Students will learn effective techniques to help retain first year students at Valencia College Career/Internship Involvement Certificate Component #1: Career Choices- Students will be able to make educated career choices based on interests, values, and skills. Career Awareness: Develop skills to locate, evaluate, and interpret career information Identify Career Goals: Apply decision-making skills to career planning, course selection, and career transition Skills to Achieve Career Goals: Student will demonstrate how interests, abilities, and achievement relate to achieving personal, social, education, and career goals Component #2: Resume Building/ Interview Skill Development- Students will be able to construct an efficient resume packet (Resume, Cover Letter, and Purpose Statement) that clearly states job objectives, relevant experience, skills and accomplishments. Also, students will gain the ability to prepare for the interview process, and implementing tips and strategies for successful interviewing. Interview Etiquette: Developing the skills needed to successfully navigate an interview Proper Resume/ Cover Letter Structure: Learning skills to put together a competitive resume and cover letter for a chosen career field Incorporating Strengths: Learning how their strengths will benefit the institution in which they are applying to Component #3: Internship Opportunities- Students will gain tangible experience that; applies academic knowledge to professional settings and develop relevant competencies and relationships in professional settings. Self- Assessment: Learning to access their own achievements and performance during the internship Incorporation: Ability to use the skills gained during the internships in their chosen career field in their community Networking: Learning how to cultivate connections and exchange useful information with others Component #4: Transfer Services- Students will be able to navigate the available transfer services to reach their goal.

Preparation: Preparing the student to use the knowledge they have attained towards further education, or chosen career field Transition: Learning skills that successfully transition them to their next college of choice or into the workforce Progression: Teaching the skills needed to be proactive moving forward in society or at their next educational institution Component #5: Employment Services- Students will be able to obtain information on employment opportunities and prospective employers Workforce Planning: Helping students align the needs and priorities of the organization with those of its workforce Facilitate Successful Job Matches: Teaches students to use information from career planning to identify jobs that will result in a high quality job match Career Field Communication: Ability to demonstrate values and language that reflect current best practice Health/Wellness Involvement Certificate Component #1: Mental/Intellectual Students will be able to open their minds to new ideas and experiences that can be applied to personal decisions, group interaction, and community betterment. Cherish mental growth and stimulation Involved in intellectual and cultural activities Engaged in the exploration of new ideas and understanding Component #2: Emotional Students will be able to understand and cope with the challenges life can bring, by gaining the ability to acknowledge and share feelings of anger, fear, sadness or stress; hope, love, joy and happiness in a productive manner. Awareness of thoughts and feelings Using a positive attitude Seeking support and expressing emotions in a suitable manner Setting priorities Accepting mistakes and learning from them Component #3: Spiritual Students will gain the ability to establish peace and harmony in their life. The ability to develop congruency between values and actions and to realize a common purpose that binds creation together. Ponder the meaning of life for ourselves and to be tolerant of the beliefs of others; not to close our minds and become intolerant. Live each day in a way that is consistent with our values and beliefs; not to do otherwise and feel untrue to self. Making time for regular relaxation/meditation/prayer/reflection

Component #4: Physical Students will learn how to recognize that their behaviors have a significant impact on their wellness and about adopting healthy habits, while avoiding destructive habits. Basic components include building strength, endurance, cardio strength, & flexibility Developing personal responsibility for our own health care (Monitoring your vital signs) Understand and appreciate the relationship between sound nutrition and how your body performs Physical benefits of looking good and feeling terrific can lead to psychological benefits of enhanced self-esteem, self-control, determination and a sense of direction Component #5: Social Student will be able to relate to and connect with other people in our world and strengthen their ability to establish and maintain positive relationships with family, friends, co-workers, etc. Seeing value in living in harmony with your fellow human beings Seeking positive, interdependent relationships with others Developing healthy behaviors Leadership/Entrepreneurship Involvement Certificate Component #1: Interpersonal Communication Skills- Students will learn communication skills and the ability to relate in diverse populations. Diversity: Ability to develop an appreciation for different cultures and communicate despite human differences Peer Communication: Ability to communicate with individuals of equal status (generally singular) Nonverbal Communication: Ability to communicate through sending and receiving wordless cues Group Communication: Communication with a finite number of other people during which information is shared or problems are solved Component #2: Critical and Reflective Thinking Abilities- Will gain an understanding of foundational leadership theories and models that explain what it takes to be a leader in their chosen major and strengthen the student s holistic experience. Perception: Develop the manner in which individuals receive, interpret and translate experiences Argument: Helping students to implement a sound argument, which is valid or proper structure and contains true premises Deductive Reasoning: Teaching students to rely on diverse facts, certainty, syllogisms, validity, truth or premises, sound arguments, and supported conclusions Inductive Reasoning: Teaches students to rely on diverse facts, probability, generalizations, hypotheses, analogies and inductive strength

Component #3: Intrapersonal Communication Skills- Students will be able to use theories of intrapersonal communication to explain and evaluate their own behavior. Self-Talk: The ability to shape our inner attitude, which shapes our behavior, and how we end up communicating with others Self-Concept: The ability to transform how students see themselves as leaders Self- Confidence: Helping students learn how to believe in themselves and their ability to lead Component #4: Commitment to Civic and Social Responsibility- Students will develop a commitment to service in their community, chosen majors and career field. Civic-Related Knowledge: Teaches students the history of the structure and mechanics of citizenship, and an understanding of their social responsibility Cognitive and Participative Skills: The ability to understand and analyze local issues, with skills that help a student resolve conflict as part of a group Civic Disposition: Giving the students a reason to believe that their participation is worthwhile Component #5: Governance- Students will learn the correct way in which power should be exercised on campus and in their community. Sustainability: Learning how to get the most out of the capacity for the organization to endure Equity: Teaches students to create equality in the access to decision making processes Efficiency: Helps students maximize the time and effort put into leadership, and how to balance other responsibilities Transparency and Accountability: The ability to lead in an ethical and trustable way Service/Volunteerism Involvement Certificate (Service Learning Certificate) Component #1: Social Justice- Students will engage in activities designed to teach equality and solidarity in various social classes of society Reciprocity: Students will learn to respond to a positive action with another positive action, essentially rewarding kind actions Social Change: Students will engage in learning designed to move students from outlooks of cynicism and despair to hope and possibility. Personal Reflection: Students will learn to reflect critically on themselves and the personal qualities that inform their practice of service and volunteerism Component #2: Community Service-Students will learn the importance of their participation in meaningful and useful activities through service and social action. Opportunity: Students will provide themselves and other students community outreach opportunities to engage in Colleagueship: Students will partner with local businesses and/or corporations in identifying internship, co-ops, and volunteer opportunities for Valencia students

Create a Model: Students will learn the importance of community service by showcasing/highlighting prior accomplishments of former student leaders in order to draw inspiration on others Component #3: Civic Development- Students will develop the ability to empower individuals and groups of people by providing them with the skills they need to effect change in their own communities. Preparing students for engagement in the community upon graduation Promote Diversity & Inclusion: Students will learn to empower their fellow students by providing learning opportunities that stress the importance of diversity and inclusion Transition: Students will develop skills that equip them for a successful transition into society, and prepare them to fulfill their responsibility to society. Civic Competence: Students will develop the desire to become an active member of society, and learn the responsibility of citizenship Reach R.E.A.C.H. (Reaching Each Academic Challenge Head On) is a brand new program on Valencia s Osceola Campus. It consists of a small group of students who take their first year of college together, with the same courses and instructors. This sort of learning community helps students connect with their classmates and professors, providing more individualized instruction, increased student success and higher graduation rates. Honors Program Become a part of the new Seneff Honors College at Valencia, offering three distinct paths to an honors degree. This program is for students who want more from their college experience more challenges, more opportunities, and more connections with fellow students and great professors. The Seneff Honors College is for people with a passion for learning. Valencia offers this and more, all in a setting that nurtures the whole individual. Bridges The Bridges Achievers Program provides continued support and mentoring while building strong academic and leadership skills. Bridges Achievers students participate in 30 hours of community service each term as tutors, mentors and role models in programs such as AVID, Head Start, YMCA After School Programs, and as elementary school reading tutors. Attendance at a variety of skills workshops is also required. RoadMap In this program students will select at least 5 components from different Certificate programs to design a personalized co-curricular experience. Students will work with an assigned Advisor or Counselor to determine which components will help them meet their career and educational outcomes.

Pre-Nursing Certificate Students interested in a career in Nursing will be required to earn a certificate that aligns with their chosen profession. Students will work with designated Advisors and Counselors to ensure they are prepared to enter the Nursing Program. Global Citizen Certificate Component #1: Knowledge (Global Literacy) Students will be able to illustrate the interconnectedness of two or more of the following using specific examples: World cultures World history and geography World religions World government and politics World economic systems World ecology Component #2: Skills (Interpersonal) Students will be able to practice compassion, empathy, and respect for others. Respect: Students will recognize the cultural sensitivities of another person s experience Empathy: Students will interpret the emotional and intellectual perspective of another person s experience Compassion: Students will imagine the experience of another person s emotional and intellectual perspective Component #3: Skills (Conflict resolution) Students will be able to hold opposing views with others from diverse cultures and background. Identify assumptions: Students will identify the assumptions that undergird their worldview in order to set them aside and be open to greater possibilities Suspend judgment: Students will suspend judgment creating a space to avoid reactions and listen more fully Component #4: Attitudes (Self-awareness) Students will be able to analyze their uniqueness and biases. Self-awareness: Students will articulate a sense of identity, self-awareness, and selfacceptance Biases: Students will understand personal norms, biases, and expectations for oneself and others Component #5: Attitudes (Cultural awareness) Students will be able to demonstrate openness to other worldviews. Diversity: Students will values and respect diversity Curiosity: Students will demonstrate curiosity about the world and others
