CME and the ISS In the year 2001 a CME project is launched at national level by the Ministry of Health: Educazione Continua in Medicina (ECM) After a period of testing the New ECM is defined and activated (2010) and taken in charge by AGENAS The (National Institute of Health) as provider

To motivate an adult to learn, training shoud be: Relevant to the profession Based on experiences Active - Interactive Based on problems Promoting self directed learning skills Allowing to apply what is learnt Funded on mutual respect learner-learner-teacher (Knowles 1990)
The Example of Problem Based Learning (PBL) PBL applies the main principles set out by Knowles (andragogy) PBL origin and application The learning generated by explaining or solving a problem (case) The Problem is set at the very beginning of learning Group Work 1: 6 learners guided by a facilitator analyse the problem, exchange prior knowledge-experience, set out learning objectives needed to solve the problem Lectures, practicals, readings fill the learning needs Group Work 2: Problem solution (De Virgilio, 2004)
What Didactic Activities Can Change Professional Behaviour? Changes in the behaviour of physicians can be generated by: Training events with high interactivity Sequences of learn/work/learn cycles (Davis et al. 1999)
ISS training model One day sessions with PBL Application on the job (Project Work Task with distance tutoring by e-mail technology) Feed-back session among peers and experts Actual Implementation of Project Work Feed-back session among peers and experts Validation of PW as work procedure
Good training + Good Evaluation Evaluating training results: in vitro vs in vivo Developing instruments and procedures for measuring professional changes: a) Performed by the health professional b) Perceived by the patient
Conclusions Training activities should made reference to Best Evidence in Medical Education (BEME) The implementation of CME ECM in Italy has actively promoted the evolution of training activities towards interactive methods The New ECM is now focussing also on the development of effective/feasible strategies to measure the impact of training activities
