6 MEMPHIS VS SEC Josh Pastner and the Memphis Tigers have faced off against seven of the ten teams currently in the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC). The team has faced Jackson State 6 times overall, and hold a 5- record, as the Jackson State Tigers are the only ones to have toppled the Memphis Tigers in the history of the series with the league. School Overall Under Pastner Alabama 5- - Arkansas - - Auburn - - Florida - - Georgia - - Kentucky - - LSU 4- - Mississippi State -* - Missouri 7-5 - Ole Miss 6- - South Carolina 8-4 - Tennessee -3 3- Texas A&M 5-4 - Vanderbilt 5-8 - TOTALS 5-66 5- MAKING A HOME AT THE CHARITY STRIPE This season, the Memphis Tigers have made a point of taking the ball to the basket, and as such, have went to the free throw line 96 times with 5 makes (the latter of the two numbers ranks th in the country). That mark also moves the needle in a big category, as 9 percent of Memphis points come from the free throw line this season, highest such total in the country. A season ago the Tigers made just 385 total free throws, tied for 86th, while their 7.9 percent of points ranked 3 of 35 schools. The point distribution is on pace to shatter the best finish by the Tigers in the category since 3, as the next best total is the 3.7 percent of points coming from free throws from the 4-5, which ranked 4th. GOOD WORKER University of Memphis senior forward Shaq Goodwin has been named as a nominee for the Allstate National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Good Works Team. The distinguished award shines a spotlight on a select group of student-athletes who have shown dedication to service in their communities. In its fourth year, the Allstate NABC and WBCA Good Works Teams recognize players at all levels of college basketball who have made outstanding contributions in the areas of volunteerism and civic involvement. From establishing nonprofits that provide youth with the necessary tools to become leaders of tomorrow, to raising awareness around pertinent issues that could save lives, these student-athletes exhibit impeccable leadership skills both on and off the court. His effort in the team s next game, an overtime win against Ohio State saw his 4-for-6 effort as the th most free throw makes in a game this season. TRIPLE, DOUBLE-DIGIT REBOUNDERS Against UT Arlington, three Memphis players reached double-figures in the rebounding column, as Shaq Goodwin pulled down 9 rebounds, Trahson Burrell, and Dedric Lawson. That was the first time that a Tiger basketball team had accomplished the feat since March 7, 9, when Robert Dozier (), Tyreke Evans (), and Shawn Taggard () all pulled down double-figure rebounds in the same game in a 74-47 regular season finale win over Tulane. BOARDING IT UP After his 9-rebound effort against UT Arlington on November 3, Memphis senior Shaq Goodwin now has each of the top two rebounding marks in American Athletic Conference history, second only to his 3-rebound effort a season ago against Temple. His total also stands as the th-most single-game rebounds in NCAA Division I this season. MEMPHIS VS THE AMERICAN ATHLETIC CONFERENCE Memphis stands with a 95-99 record all-time against the teams in the American Athletic Conference. During that span, he recorded seven double-digit scoring performances and a pair of double-doubles. During that span he raised his scoring average from 7.8 to 9.6, and his rebounding average from 5.7 to 7.. Included in that stretch was a 3-rebound performance - an American Athletic Conference single-game record - against Temple on February 7. BABY TIGERS Memphis brought in seven freshman for the 5-6 season; however, it is not just a high number, but a quality group, that was ranked as the No. recruiting class by 47sports.com, and is the only American Athletic Conference team ranked inside of the top 3 overall (UConn at No. 3).
GOODWIN ON MAILMAN LIST In the middle of October, Memphis senior Shaq Goodwin was announced as one of candidates for the Karl Malone Power Forward of the Year, given by the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. One uses Junior at the end of his name (Ricky Tarrant Jr.), one uses Roman numerals (Craig Randall II), one uses initials (K.J. Lawson), and one uses their middle name (William Shaq Goodwin). SHOPPING AT THE LEFTORIUM For most, the Leftorium reference falls on deaf ears, but four players on the Memphis men s basketball team would do well to shop at Ned Flanders left-handed-centric store from the cartoon The Simpsons. One quarter of the players on the men s basketball team are left handed, including three freshman (Jeremiah Martin, Randall Broddie, and Craig Randall) and a senior (Caleb Wallingford). WHAT A LIFE SAVER Where a lot of opportunities for saving a life may come at the local pool, the Memphis basketball team had a unique and nearly tragic incident happen this summer. In the early morning hours, the apartment of Trahson Burrell and Markel Crawford caught fire. Burrell woke up to the flames, and then rushed to wake up Crawford and Crawford s brother who was visiting, getting the pair out of the apartment before the place went up in flames. 5-6 STARTING LINEUPS Game G G G F F LeMoyne-Owen (Exhib) Tarrant Jr. Woodson Crawford D.
