1 Luggage Tag These luggage tags are a terrific way to use up fabric scraps. To use leftover border print for your tags, you may need to adjust the width of your tag; we ve made some suggestions for using leftovers from. Materials Required 2 fabric patches measuring 3½" x 6½" for tag front and back* 1 fabric strip measuring 1½" x 13½" for loop 1 piece of clear vinyl measuring 2½" x 4½" 1 scrap of lightweight batting measuring 3½" x 6½" * See Note on Using Border Print Construction Luggage Tag Loop Fold the fabric strip in half lengthwise, right sides together. Stitch ¼" from the raw edges. Turn right side out to make a tube; press flat. Luggage Tag On one of the fabric patches, mark ¾" from the top and ¾" in from the corners. Draw lines connecting ¾" ¾" the marks on each side. Stack the fabric and batting patches and cut off the corners along the marked lines. in place using a scant ¼" seam allowance. Place the back and front tag patches right sides together with the batting as the bottom layer. Make sure the loop is sandwiched between the front and back fabric patches. Sew around the tag, leaving an opening in the bottom for turning. Turn the tag right side out, pushing out the corners. Turn the unstitched fabric from the opening to the inside to make a clean edge. Top-stitch close to the edge around all sides of the tag. Center the vinyl on the tag front and sew around three sides, leaving the side closest to the loop open, and starting and ending the stitching past the edge of the vinyl. Place the batting on the wrong side of the fabric patch for the back (border print, if using). Baste a scant ¼" from the edge on all sides. Trim the batting close to the stitching to reduce bulk. Place the raw edges of the loop on the right side of the fabric patch for the front. Center and stitch A Note on Using Border Print Border print fabric looks great used for a luggage tag. To take best advantage of the printed stripes on the border print, you may want to adjust the width of your fabric patches. The example on the right shows the standard luggage tag size on the border print used in. (The dashed lines are sewing lines, indicating what will show in a finished tag.) The tag s 3½" width captures most of the wide design stripe including the narrow gold stripe on the long outside edges. To achieve a similar effect using the narrow stripe, the luggage tag would need to be made just a bit narrower. (The pink lines indicate new suggested sewing lines.) 2011, Jinny Beyer

2 Blocks 4 & 4r - Birds in Flight These blocks are identical to Blocks 3 and 3r except for the fabric placement. Take care to keep your Blocks 3 and 4 labeled and separated! Step 1: Cut & Mark the Patches Blocks 4 and 4r are made using a combination of techniques, including foundation piecing. A Patches: Using Template A and referring to Cutting Border Print Patches in Working with Border Print Fabric, cut eight identical A-triangles from a wide stripe of 6. The patches must match those in Block 2. 5: Cut eight patches using Template E and eight patches using Template F. For the G patches, either cut 24 patches using Template G or cut 12 squares measuring 3½" and cut them in half once on the diagonal to make 24. Block 4 - Make four measuring 11". Foundation 2 After the cutting the patches, mark the seam intersections as described in the General Instructions. Foundations Please note that the following pieces are cut slightly oversized for easier foundation piecing. A 6 Unmarked sections are foundations or 5. Fabrics 1-6, 12, 13: From each fabric, cut four squares measuring 3¼" and then cut them once on the diagonal to make eight triangles. 5: Cut 32 squares measuring 3¼" and then cut them once on the diagonal to make 64 triangles. Step 2: Sew the Foundation Sections Make four copies of each of the Block 4 and Block 4r foundation sheets. Tape the two halves of Foundation 1/1r together at the dashed line to make full-sized foundations. Sew the fabric patches to the foundations. When complete, trim the fabric and paper to the outer solid lines. Leave the paper in place. Step 3: Sew the Blocks The only difference between the 4 and 4r blocks is the foundation strips. To avoid confusion, first make four of Block 4 and then make four of Block 4r. Assemble the blocks as in the diagrams on the following page. Block 4r - Make four measuring 11". Foundation 2r 5 A 6 Unmarked sections are foundations or 5.

3 Assemble Blocks 4 and 4r Sew an E-patch to the short side of Foundation 1, matching the dots. Sew a G-triangle to the short side of Foundation 2, matching the dots. Sew those two units together to make one half of the block. Sew an F-patch to an A-triangle to make the other half of the block. Sew the two halves together to make a complete block. Repeat to make four of Block 4 and four of Block 4r. G G E E F F Block 4 Block 4r 6

6 Block 5 - Mariner s Compass A beautiful Mariner s Compass block with sharp points is well within your reach when foundation pieced or sewn by hand. Block 5 can be made using templates or foundation piecing techniques. Choose one method and follow those instructions only. Step 1: Prepare Templates & Foundations Template Piecing: Using the patterns on the following pages and following the instructions for Making Templates in the General Instructions, prepare templates for patches H-Q. Block 5 - Make eight measuring 11". Foundation2 Foundation 1 Foundation Piecing: Using the patterns on the following pages and following the instructions for Making Templates in the General Instructions, prepare templates for patches H and L. Make eight copies of Foundations 1-4. Foundation 3 Step 2: Cut & Mark Patches Both Methods: Note that many templates are used right side up and flipped over (or reversed). When the template should be reversed, an r is added to the template name, as in Template Xr, for example. H Patches: Using Template H and referring to Cutting Border Print Patches in the General Instructions, cut eight identical H-triangles tion of the border print fabric. Cut eight H-triangles from this por- from a wide stripe of 6. As shown in image (right), the patches will not match those used in Blocks 2, 3 and 4. L Patches: From Fabric 8, cut eight pieces using Template L and eight pieces using Template Lr. Foundation 4 Or Q L L/Lr is Fabric 8. P O 4 N J 2 4 M J K Lr Nr Jr I Mr Jr Kr L H L/Lr is Fabric 8. All other unmarked pieces are 5. Repeat to make eight blocks measuring 11". Foundation Piecing: Make eight of each foundation, trimming the foundation and fabric to the outside line of each foundation when complete. Assemble the block as follows. Repeat to make eight blocks measuring 11". Leave paper in place. Block Assembly Instructions Foundation 2/1 Unit Foundation 1 Foundation 2 Foundation 3 Foundation 4 Foundation 4/3 Unit Step 1: Sew Foundation 1 to Foundation 2, and Foundation 3 to Foundation 4, matching the dots.
