Issue No By Brett Weiss C e n t r a l E d i t i o n Vintage video consoles make a comeback as collectibles Vintage video games are en vogue. Certain Atari 2600 and Nintendo NES cartridges that you could purchase at such stores as Sears and Toys R Us back in the 1980s are now worth hundreds or even thousands of dollars on the collector s market, based on rarity and demand. Retro gaming conventions, where people can attend panels, shop the vendor s room, and play classic arcades and consoles, are popping up all over the country. These types of shows date back to the late 1990s, but they are bigger and much more frequent now. Perhaps the biggest indicator of the retro gaming boom is that modern publishers are getting in on the act, providing convenient ways to play old games. This includes Nintendo, who is mining their past by creating mini versions of their classic systems that you can plug into modern television sets. Last year s NES Classic Edition, which featured 30 built-in games, was a huge hit, and this year s Super Nintendo Classic Edition, featuring such favorites as Donkey Kong Country and Super Mario Kart, should prove equally popular. Other companies, such as AtGames, produce such plug and play consoles as the Atari Flashback, Intellivision Flashback, and Sega Genesis Flashback. Further, small publishers, such as Atari Age and CollectorVision, are creating new game cartridges (so-called homebrew games) for the older systems, a phenomenon that began during the mid-1990s with such titles as Edtris (a Tetris clone for the Atari 2600) and Vector Vaders (a Space Invaders clone for the Vectrex). Ever since the late 1990s, clever computer programmers have been able to play console games on home computers. These early programs allowed users to play console video games in the form of ROM (Read Only Memory) files through a program called an Emulator, just as the system would read the ROM through the actual game cartridge. The availability of ROMs plays a role in the popularity of retro gaming as well. You can download ROMs of old games to your modern computer, or, better yet, something like the Harmony Cartridge for the Atari With the Harmony Cartridge, you simply put game ROMs on an SD card, pop the card into the Harmony Cartridge, insert said cartridge into the Atari console slot, and then select from a list of games to play. While retro gaming is popular today, if you collected vintage video games during the 90s you were an anomaly. In those days, as in the 80s, You can play Atari 2600 games via emulation, but hardcore collectors and retro gamers prefer the original hardware. New ways to play classic games, such as the Super Nintendo Classic Edition, help keep retro gaming alive among the general public. the vast majority of people who got a new game system put the old one in the attic or garage, donated it to a thrift store, or simply put it out by the curb. There were relatively few true video game collectors, and it was hard to find anyone who had more than one or two game consoles hooked up in their house and ready to play. For those of us who did collect, it was super easy to find used video games for cheap prices in the wild, including at garage sales, pawn shops, thrift stores, flea markets, and even second-hand bookstores. Fandom was there for older games during the 90s, as evidenced by such fanzines (fan-made magazines) as Slap-Dash, the Atari 2600 Connection, and Digital Press, but it was largely an underground endeavor. The hobby of collecting old video games began its meteoric rise around a decade ago. Nintendo introduced the Wii Shop Channel in 2006, letting players download old games to their current system. After playing the games, many gamers found that they desired the original cartridges and consoles and would seek them out. It was also around this time that The Angry Video Game Nerd got popular. AVGN is a YouTube personality who makes fun of bad video games for such consoles as the Atari 2600, NES, Genesis, and Super Nintendo. Many people who watch his videos purchase the games he discusses in ironic fashion or to experience first-hand just how bad the games are. AVGN, who spawned countless imitators, also praises certain old games, making those titles popular as well. Some people enjoy the simplicity of older games, many of which required only one or two buttons and a joystick or control pad to play. Longing for the good old days plays a role in collecting as well, but it s much deeper than that. What s going on right now goes beyond nostalgia, which is why I don t see the hobby fading away, said Patrick Scott Patterson, a Texas-based video game advocate, historian, and preservationist. The first generations of gamers have grown up and are now the ones creating content not just YouTube and Twitch, but also movies, television, music, and books. This, combined with the fact that older titles are now available via download on countless plat- See Video Games on page 19 One of Indy s Best Kept Secrets!! The pipe, which sold for $132,000 (including a 20 percent buyer s premium), was one of many bidding wars on the day that spurred Cowan s Fall American Indian & Western Art Live Salesroom to a $1.25 million total. The eastern woodlands pipe exceeded its high estimate but even at this price, AUBURN, Ind. The Auburn Cord Duesenberg Automobile Museum will be showcasing a 1914 Duesenberg racecar (right) once driven by Eddie Rickenbacker. The vehicle is on loan through spring from the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum. This early Duesenberg-built racecar was entered into the 1914 Indianapolis 500-mile race. For the race, it carried the number 42 and it was driven by Eddie Rickenbacker, of World War I fame, with Eddie O Donnell as the riding mechanic. The pair qualified at more than 88 mph and finished the race in 10th place, averaging over 70 mph. It is powered by a 361 cubic-inch four-cylinder Duesenberg engine. More than 120 classic, antique, vintage and special interest cars are displayed with other automotive related exhibits on three floors at the Auburn Cord Duesenberg museum. The museum is located in the original 1930s national headquarters of the legendary Auburn Automobile Company and is a National Historic Landmark. Pipes from this era and this region are incredibly rare but pipes with this level of craftsmanship quite simply don t ever come to market. Over 300 years after it was originally carved, you can still make out carved tattoo markings and his glass imitation wampum bead belt is still intact. It s a stunning piece. Depicting a nearly naked reclined man sitting with his hands on his hips and legs extended, the pipe somehow managed to survive the European settlement of the southern Great Lakes and Ohio Valley region that destroyed most pieces of Native American culture from that time. The rarity of the pipe was not lost on bidders. Bidding started at $40,000 as four phone bidders from around the country battled two floor bidders for several minutes before the hammer finally fell at $110,000. For the second time in 2017, the prehistoric art from Jan W. Sorgenfrei was the most coveted collection of the day. Although Sorgenfrei collected a wide variety of prehistoric artifacts, he was especially partial to birdstones and had assembled arguably the world s finest collection at the time of his death. This was followed by an Eastern Plains tacked ball club from the collection of Marvin Lince that sold for $25,200. 3 Page 3 Good customer service goes a long way There is one thing you can do right now to boost your business (and I don t care what kind of business it is). The best part, this is a free thing. You already own it. You You are the thing that can boost your business; or perhaps more accurately, your customer service. Seriously, how hard can the concept of good customer service be? Evidently it is difficult as I see bad customer service on a daily basis. Recently, three different people have contacted me to help them make decisions about downsizing after the death or move to a retirement home of a relative. After viewing the items in question I asked all three of these people to contact auctioneers. Only one of the three people has received great customer service. I realize many auctioneers don t want to deal with just a house full of stuff. In all three cases I tried to match the merchandise with what I thought the individual auction houses might be interested in. But, there is more to a sales call than landing that particular client. Each person you come in contact with can lead to many other clients. So, if someone has a bad experience with your business you may be losing out on other clients down the road. In the first case; I sent a person the name of three auctioneers. Only one of them called back. The one that did call back was awesome; but he was not interested in the sale once he saw the items. But, he showed up, was extremely professional and polite and he left the people CIRCA By Connie Swaim with a great experience should they run into someone else who needs an auctioneer. The two auctioneers who did not call back will not be getting said recommendations. In another instance, a woman who was clearing the home of her recently deceased mother was told by the person who answered the phone at one of the auction houses I recommended that the auctioneer in question had clients with very discerning tastes. The person answering the phone made it sound as if she was already convinced that my friend s mother s merchandise would not make the grade. The tone of the conversation left a bad taste in my friend s mouth. The estate in question is located in a very wealthy neighborhood and the woman who died was well known. Many people have already asked her daughter if she is going to use an auctioneer and asked who she might choose as they are also thinking of selling now before they have to let their kids deal with it. Someone certainly is going to lose out on a lot of great referrals. In the third case; I sent an inquiry for someone else and I got a super fast response with great information. See Circa on page 4 A look back at the antiques market In celebration of this, the 1,600th Rinker on Collectibles column, I decided to look back at the 16th edition of Warman s Antiques and Their Prices and see how auctioneers, collectors, dealers, and others viewed the antiques market at that time. The 16th Edition was the first edition I edited. That was in It seems like yesterday. Those who argue that a person cannot go back are wrong. A person can revisit the past and should from time to time. There is much to learn. If nothing else, a return provides a base date set to measure what has transpired in the interim good, bad, or ugly. Change is a given, especially since the arrival of the digital age. Because change usually occurs gradually, it often goes unnoticed. A look backward spotlights change. Assuming the editorship of Warman s Antiques and Their Prices was a thrilling and heady time for me. I embarked on a learning curve that consumed most waking moments. Stanley and Katherine Greene, the new owners of Warman Publishing, wanted the existing format revised and shifted from publishing every two rinker on Collectibles By Harry L. Rinker years to annually. Warman s compact size, 5 1/4 inches by 6 1/4 inches, made it easy to carry or stash out of sight in a dealer s booth. The principal purchasers were auctioneers and dealers. Although Warman s was sold in bookstores, it had yet to find a general audience. See Rinker on page 4 Letters **Letters to the editor reflect the opinions of the letter writer and not necessarily AntiqueWeek newspaper.** The art of downsizing To the Editor: I am hopeful that there will be future articles about how to downsize with antiques. One might easily say to have an Estate Company handle the antiques. I looked into this and when the company came they provided their contract which included a 30 percent or more seller s fee (dependent upon the collection identification, moving, wrapping, etc). Many of the items I was interested in selling had been purchased from the auction house I contacted. However, I had not added to this collection in some years. The auction firm advised I could expect no more than pennies on the dollar of any of my pieces included in the collection. My collection includes Weller Pottery Watermelon Mammy as well as some super cookie jars. I thought about this conversation and after a few days canceled my plans to dispose of my beloved Black Memorabilia collection, etc. via this route. We also have collections including salesman samples, furniture, Sleepy Eye, Shawnee Corn King and Royal Doulton Character Jugs. I will be divesting of many of these collections but I can t be the only one surprised by what has changed and how to proceed with finding someone who will love them as much as we have for so many years. I found looking online that this generation does not want brown furniture, are not interested in collections and are drawn to IKEA. I sent a few s to Black Societies in hopes that they would want pieces of my collections which is primarily kitchenware, cookie jars, advertising pieces, Aunt Jemima, etc. They wanted slave documents, leg irons, etc. Am I the only subscriber to pose this issue/problem? Are there any avenues you or your readers can provide as to where to donate antique collections? I would rather donate than sell as there are tax advantages if you can determine fair market value rather than have to take what is bid at auction. Mary Goetz-Bailey Carmel, Ind. 4 Page 4 Rinker From Page 3 Pattern glass collectors were the one exception. E. G. Warman loved glass, especially pattern glass. Previous editions were glass category heavy with the first third of the book devoted to pattern glass patterns. The 16th edition contained 654 pages, not counting the front matter and index. 150 pages, more than 22.5 percent of the book, were devoted to pattern glass. Given the collecting market of the times, pattern glass received too much attention. Reducing pattern glass coverage was at the top of my to-do list of changes. Can you identify the general collecting category for the following 10 sub categories that appeared in the 16th edition? Award yourself a bonus point if you can describe two or more examples within a collecting category. 1. Aurene 2. Basalt 3. Castleford 4. Fitzhugh 5. Goofus 6. Herculaneum 7. Lowestoft 8. Peloton 9. Rose Tapestry 10. Salopian Do not look at for the answers at the end of this column. Researching antiques and collectibles is an adventure. If you have a copy of the 16th through the 19th editions of Warman s Antiques and Their Prices, you will find the answers there. If not, try the internet. In reviewing the category listings, I was struck by how many categories were form related. The 1980s were the Golden Age of form collecting. The list includes baskets, bells, cup plates, cruets, epergnes, fairy lamps, miniature lamps, muffineers (sugar castors), mustache cups and saucers, nodders, pickle castors, rose bowls, salts, shaving mugs, toothpick holders, trivets, and washbowls & pitchers. I doubled checked to make certain cups and saucers and tumblers were not included. They were not. Shortly after becoming editor of Warman s, I visited a tumbler collector. The collection numbered in the high hundreds and featured examples from several dozen crossover art glass and other glass subcategories. Glass and ceramic miniature shoe collecting was popular at the time but considered more a hobby than a serious collecting category. The shoe category eventually made its appearance in Warman s Americana and Collectibles. SHIPSHEWANA, Ind. For those who love shopping at Shipshewana, but dread the cold, do not fear. The Shipshewana Flea Market is heading across the road and opening a new indoor market for the fall / winter season called appropriately enough Across the Road. We re always getting requests for additional post-flea market season shopping and selling opportunities, said Michael Christner, Shipshewana Across the Road director. We ve got a great facility for it, and great vendors, so we decided to make it happen this fall and winter. Shipshewana Across the Road will be held inside the Farmstead Expo Barn, just across the street from the and Flea Market grounds. The market is scheduled to be open to the public every Friday and Saturday from Oct. 6 to Dec. 16 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. We decided to have it at the Farmstead Expo Barn because it is a large, climate-controlled facility that is Collectors clubs existed in support of many of these form collecting categories, for example, cup plates, rose bowls, salts, toothpick holders, and trivets. The Open Salt ( and Toothpick ( clubs survive, each with an active internet website. Others have disappeared or combined with other collecting categories, such as the Pressing Iron and Trivet Collectors of America (www. pressingironandtrivetcollectors.org). The number of specialized ceramic and glass collecting categories showed the leadership role these two general categories played within the early 1980s antiques marketplace. Although the primary emphasis was on manufacturer, other factors added to the sophistication. For example, in ceramics individual patterns, (Adams Rose, Autumn Leaf, Indian Tree, and King s Rose), colors (Mulberry China) and patterns with multiple sub-types (Gaudy Dutch, Gaudy Ironstone, Gaudy Welsh, Famille Rose, Spatterware) increased the list. A similar list of categories could be made for glass. While textiles, with the exception of samplers and Stevensgraphs, was a general category, most metals had their own category brass, copper, ironware, pewter, and silver. There was no category for gold. When I assumed the editorship, I issued a dictate that objects listed had to be available in the antiques flea markets, shops, and shows frequented by the average collectors. In 1982, a separate collectibles marketplace was in its infancy. A few collectibles collecting categories, such as advertising, banks (mechanical and still), Depression glass, dolls, toy trains, toy soldiers, and toys (wooden, cast iron, and pressed steel), were included, an indication of the foothold collectibles were gaining. For those readers who are aware of my collecting interests, it will come as no surprise that cowboy collectibles appeared for the first time in the 16th edition of Warman s. The 1980s and the 1990s was the golden age of the printed general antiques price guide, expanded in the mid-1990s to a general antiques and collectibles price guide. At the time, I argued that I didn t care whose price guide a person bought. What I did care about is that the person bought the same title year after year and kept them on a shelf as a reference to note the change in the past and present marketplace. In 2017, I doubt if few individuals involved in the trade have a price guide run dating before Who uses printed price guides these days? Most are highend auction picture driven. Their relevance to what is found in the field is minimal. Shipshewana opens new market Across the Road Above: Shipshewana Across the Road Indoor Market vendor, Handmade by Carol already set up to host markets, due to the fact that it used to house an antique mall, said Christner. The facility can hold around 80 vendors, and they are expecting to have about 50 to 60 unique booths at Shipshewana Across the Road this season. Shoppers can expect to see a small-scale indoor version of the Shipshewana Flea Market. Contact: A recent incident provided the inspiration for this column. An auctioneer/estate sale manager asked my assistance to identify material for a catalog sale from an estate assembled by an antiques collector during the 1950s through the 1970s. A gorgeous rainbow spatterware platter was among the pieces I set aside. The auctioneer had no idea what it was. He told me he would have probably put $50 on it and sold it in the general sale. One sold recently at auction for over $11,000. The lesson is simple. Forgetting, or worse yet not knowing, the past can cost a great deal of money. A few 1980s, 1900s, and 2000s price guides in a reference library, assuming they are reviewed and consulted, provides a person in the antiques and collectibles trade with a competitive edge. For those of us who entered the antiques and collectibles trade in the 1970s and 1980s, these were thrilling times. I know I cannot live in the past. But, revisiting it once in a while brings a smile to my face and a satisfaction that what I learned then has served me in good stead for close to 50 years. POSTSCRIPT: Rinker on Collectibles has experienced many milestones. I never dreamed it would continue as long as it has. This is column 1,600, a milestone only in that it is a one hundred numbered column. Column #1612, marking Rinker on Collectibles 31st anniversary is the next milestone. I continue to debate with myself how many more milestones await after that number is reached. Harry L. Letter From Page 3 To the Editor: In reading your article entitled Mammoth family heads to the Block, in your Sept. 25 edition, Rupert van der Werff is quoted as saying: One country that will not be greeting the mammoth family is the United States, The mammoths will not be coming to the US. because of the current ivory trade ban....the U.S. doesn t make a distinction between mammoth ivory and elephant ivory. The June 2016 final rule from the Fish and Wildlife Service does make a distinction: only African ivory is banned. Asian Ivory was banned years before. Mammoth, or species over 100 years old, ivory is not banned from the U.S. I have not found a subsequent ruling to change the above. Is there some legislation of which I am unaware? Just seeking clarification as to what Mr. van der Werff is basing this statement. Rick Albert Via Editor s Note: We are going to have an upcoming article on this issue. However, New York and New Jersey have recently signed legislation that includes banning mammoth ivory. Circa From Page 3 As a dog trainer I get queries every day for training help. I can t always assist the person; but I always or call back. If I can t help; I provide a referral to someone else or I provide links to websites which might help. Sometimes I just send people information for simple problems like housebreaking or crate training. Most of my clients now come from referrals and some of those referrals have come from people I never actually worked with. They are just people happy with the customer service I provided for them. I just landed two customers after a woman listed my contact information on a Facebook page for a mother s group. I never actually worked with the woman; but I had sent her some information and was kind when she was worried about her dog. When someone on her Facebook group asked for a dog trainer recommendation; she quickly provided my information. So, before you blow someone off; think about all of the ramifications and how many lives one person can touch. It s just good customer service. 16 Page 16 Tennessee paintings find home in Williamsburg WILLIAMSBURG, Va. While the Art Museums of Colonial Williamsburg are filled with extraordinary collections of works of fine, decorative and folk art, a common thread connects them: they each help to tell the story of America and its people, especially in the nation s early days. Furthering this mission is the acquisition of two oil-on-canvas portraits from Nashville, Tenn., circa 1825, by the artist Ralph E.W. Earl (circa ) marking the first illustration of any kind from Tennessee to join the Colonial Williamsburg collections. Especially notable is that the subjects of the portraits were leaders and associates of Andrew Jackson painted by a notable artist from the region. It is exciting to add these fine examples of portraiture to the Foundation s collections, said Mitchell B. Reiss, president and CEO of Colonial Williamsburg. Owning pieces of material culture from this region helps us to better understand and interpret the history of our country and the people who shaped it. Colonial Williamsburg has collected notable Tennessee furniture, ceramics, metals, and textiles in recent years, but important paintings had eluded us, said Ronald L. Hurst, the Foundation s Carlisle Humelsine chief curator and vice president for collections, conservation, and museums. The acquisition of these outstanding Earl portraits is a major step in our efforts to share the culture of Tennessee and other inland southern HUG GE 2 ESTA AT TE Thursday, October 12, 2017 states with our guests. Ralph Eleaser Whiteside Earl (more commonly known as Ralph E.W. Earl) was the son of Connecticut painter Ralph Earl and was likely born in New York. He studied painting with his father until 1809 when he went to London to study for a year under Benjamin West and John Trumbull. From there he spent four years in Norwich, England, with his mother s family before going to Paris for a year to study Napoleon s collected masterworks. He returned to America in 1815 with the intention to create grand historical paintings in the European style and decided that his first would be of the Battle of New Orleans. Earl arrived in Nashville on New Year s Day in 1817 to paint a portrait of General Andrew Jackson, hero of the Battle of Orleans, and ended up remaining there and painted several portraits of Jackson and his family. Later that year, through introductions made by Jackson, Earl met and quickly married Jane Caffery, Mrs. Jackson s niece. (Unfortunately, Jane died the next year in childbirth along with their son.) Earl remained close with the Jackson family after his wife s death and lived with them at their Nashville home, The Hermitage. In 1829, when Jackson became President, Earl accompanied him to the White House and painted so many portraits of him that he became known as the court painter to the president. After Jackson s second term in office, Earl returned with him to Tennessee and died VEHICLE, SHOP TOOLS, ANTIQUE FURNITURE, ANTIQUES &, &, COLLECTIBLE, E, S, MOBILITY EQUIPME, E, NT TERMS: Cash Credit Cards Check with Proper ID OK Sales Ta x Applies unless exemption is shown. 19 Page 19 Video Games From Front Page forms, has not just appealed to the older generations but also introduced a whole new generation to these classic games. If I wear a Pac-Man T-shirt these days, I have more kids come up commenting on it than adults. This wasn t a thing in the past, as a lot of titles simply died off once a console cycle ended. Computer games date back to Steve Russell s Spacewar, which he created in 1961 and 1962, but the first person to conceive of and execute the idea of playing games on a television set was inventor Ralph Baer known as The Father of Video Games. In 1966 and 1967, while working as a division manager at Sanders Associates (a defense contractor), Baer began putting his plan into action, delegating technician Bill Harrison and engineer Bill Rusch to the task of creating a game device based on his designs. Harrison helped Baer develop a rudimentary technique for transferring images onto a television screen while Rusch specialized in actual game design. By November of 1967, Baer and his assistants demonstrated a fully functional pingpong or tennis game (a precursor to the arcade classic Pong), in which players use paddles to rebound a ball back and forth across the screen. The trio also created a game consisting of two squares chasing each other. In 1968, Baer applied for the first video game patent. By 1969, Baer and company were demonstrating several iterations of the legendary Brown Box, a prototype unit that was equipped with a light gun, a console, and two controllers. Each controller had a vertical control, a horizontal control, and a control for putting English on the ball. Baer demonstrated the Brown Box to a number of television companies, including General Electric, Sylvania, and RCA, but it was Magnavox who took the bait. The company reengineered the Brown Box into a more streamlined unit (a futuristic white design), called it the Odyssey, and released it in 1972 (the same year Nolan Bushnell and Al Alcorn introduced Pong to the arcades) as the world s first commercially available video game system. The console retailed for $100. Today, a complete Odyssey console in the box is worth around $600. Unlike more sophisticated video game consoles that followed, the Odyssey doesn t have microprocessors. Rather, it contains transistors and diodes. The games are plug-in cards that essentially reconfigure the system s internal circuitry to make minor adjustments to the basic onscreen objects, which consist of a pair of paddles, a ball, and a line. Due to the barebones nature of the Odyssey console (the unit produced no color, no scorekeeping, and no sound), the games were packaged with a variety of extras, such as game boards, dice, play money, tokens, tiles, Below: Ad for the Nintendo Entertainment System, which revived the home video game industry in the U.S. during the mid-late 1990s. Right: The late Ralph Baer, creator of the Odyssey, invited the concept of playing video games on a television set. cards, and/or other items. The games also came with TV screen overlays to provide color and visual detail. Some of the best games for the console, including Shooting Gallery, Prehistoric Safari, Dogfight, and Shootout, were produced for the system s Shooting Gallery light rifle. Complete games for the Odyssey are worth about $40 each while a boxed light rifle sells for around $150. The first fully programmable, cartridge-based video game console was the now-obscure Fairchild Channel F, which came out in 1976, predating the more advanced Atari 2600 by about a year. Unlike previous home consoles (such as the Odyssey and various Pong units and Pong clones), the Fairchild Channel F let you purchase separate cartridges (containing ROM chips) that you could swap out in order to play a variety of relatively sophisticated games, including shooters, board games, racing titles, and sports simulations. The Atari 2600, originally known as the Atari VCS, trounced the Fairchild in popularity, especially beginning in 1980, when Atari licensed the arcade hit Space Invaders for its console. Today, a working Atari 2600 with a few common games will set you back around $100, same as the Fairchild Channel F, but demand for the 2600 is much higher. The reason pricing is similar is because the Channel F was produced in much smaller quantities and is therefore harder to find. Some of the more popular Atari 2600 cartridges, such as Space Invaders, Asteroids, Defender, and Missile Command, are still plentiful and can easily be found at retro gaming stores and conventions for a buck or two apiece. Kick in an additional $5 to $10 each if they are complete in the box. Conversely, some of the rarer Atari 2600 games are worth what you might pay for a used car. According to some of the more valuable Atari 2600 cartridges include Red Sea Crossing ($13,800), Air Raid ($4,000), Pepsi Invaders ($2,000), Video Life ($1,200), and Lochjaw ($750). Expect to pay much more for these games complete. For example, a boxed copy of Air Raid sold on ebay in 2012 for $33,433.30, the highest price ever paid for an Atari 2600 game. The Atari 2600 was followed by a variety of competitors, including: the Intellivision ($100 with several common games), which wowed consumers with its elaborate sports simulations; the Odyssey 2 ($80 with several common games), which came with a computer-like keyboard; the ColecoVision ($150 with several common games), which dazzled players with its stellar arcade ports; and the Atari 5200 ($150 with several common games), which was Atari s 1982 follow-up to the In 1983 and 1984, The Great Video Game Crash pretty much killed the American console industry. The crash was caused by a number of factors, including a glut of shovelware (terrible games) for the Atari 2600 produced by fly-by-night third-party companies. However, a short time later, the Nintendo Entertainment System (known as the Famicom in Japan) brought the industry back phoenix-like from the ashes. Test marketed in the U.S. in 1985 and widely released in 1986, the NES, which was packaged with a toy robot and marketed as an entertainment device to ease the minds of retailers wary of video games after the crash, impressed consumers with its array of expansive, story- and character-driven games that were perfectly suited for home play. This included such titles as Super Mario Bros. ($10, $50 complete in box), Contra ($30, $70 complete), Metroid ($15, $75 complete), Castlevania ($22, $85 complete), and The Legend of Zelda ($20, $70 complete), which in 1987 introducedpeople in the west to the concept of role-playing games. The NES re-invented console video gaming, Patterson said. No longer did the biggest games have to be arcade ports, and so much new and exciting variety was added throughout the lifespan of the console. Plus, many of its games have aged really well, something I can t say of many Atari VCS titles or, for that matter many of the games that came later on platforms like the PlayStation. You can pick up a working NES with around five to 10 common games for approximately $100. Expect to kick in $50 to $75 more if you want the box. Most game cartridges fall in the $5 to $25 range, but some of the rarities go for much more than that. Earlier this year, a factory sealed copy of the super rare Stadium Events sold for almost $42,000. The NES demolished its rivals, the Atari 7800 and the Sega Master System, and it paved the way for such subsequent home consoles as the Sega Genesis, Super Nintendo, PlayStation, and Xbox. The current consoles of note are the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. Today, video games are a multi-billion dollar business, bringing in more revenue than the film and music industries combined. Retro gaming is a relatively small piece of this pie, but it s a fascinating hobby with a passionate and growing fan base. Issue No Art dealer sentenced By Jim Rutledge GLOUCESTER, England A celebrity art dealer to iconic rock stars, musicians and to Hollywood s A-list has been sentenced to four years in prison for stealing the proceeds from the sales of his client s paintings including famous works by John Lennon, Rolling Stones guitarist Ronnie Woods and jazz great Miles Davis. Officials say the art dealer kept nearly $700,000 in sales receipts, money that still can t be accounted for as well as an unknown number of still missing artworks valued at hundreds of thousands of dollars. Jonathan Poole, 69, a popular British art dealer and wildlife painter, was sentenced Sept. 12 after confessing to 26 of 59 counts in an earlier court proceeding of defrauding his clients and pocketing the proceeds from the art sales, or for falsely claiming to be entitled to sell artworks owned by his clients. Authorities are hoping publicity from the case will prompt collectors and others who may have bought artwork from Poole to come forward with the still unaccounted for paintings. Just six days after his sentencing, police acting on a tip of a pending Internet art auction, raided the home of a former art dealer who had since died and recovered 32 missing Lennon prints worth more than $50,000. Included was a print titled, A Bird Dreaming, a sketch of a woman at a table called Coffee Morning and a self-portrait of himself in his Manhattan apartment. By Eric C. Rodenberg BELVIDERE, Tenn. It will take two full days of selling to disperse the collection of a single person who spent 40 years collecting porcelain neon signs, tractors, pedal cars and much, much more. The auction will be conducted by Kimball M. Sterling. Above: This caricature of Rolling Stone s Bob Dylan by band mate and guitarist Ronnie Wood was used as evidence against celebrity art dealer Jonathan Poole in his sentencing for defrauding his clients out of $700,000. A police spokesman said in a local media account the Lennon pieces had been purchased from Poole years ago. The Poole art fraud case has dragged on for years as the court attempted to locate the missing artwork and account for all the fees Poole earned during the years when the thefts occurred from 1986 to Over the course of his 40-year career, Poole has maintained two galleries in the rural south central English countryside of Cotswold, some 92 miles from London. One of his galleries was the once respected Compton Cassey art gallery. During his sentencing, prosecutors compared Poole to the star of the popular 1999 film remake of the Thomas Crown Oct. 2, 2017 See dealer on page 3 Although the collector wishes to remain anonymous, he is 74 years old. He has been collecting for years. Many of the items he bought were restored by him, according to Sterling. And he did pretty good work; but, if he didn t do it, he paid top dollar to have it done. In some ways, the consignor s plight is a common case. My wife and I decided Surf's up at Dargate McKEES ROCKS, Pa. Dargate Galleries Premier Art and Antique Estate on Oct. 7, will offer a wealth of fine antiques from throughout the world, including art, a R. Lalique crystal, a collection of religious icons and artifacts, clocks and fine 18th and 19th century French furniture. Also among the 700 lots to be sold, are several unique collectibles, including a 6-foot surfboard from the Nemacolin Woodlands Resort Collection. (shown right). The personalized surfboard by Craig Hollingsworth features signed artwork by Hawaiian artist Wade Kaniakowsky. Also of interst is a Fender 40th anniversary Playboy Stratocaster guitar (no. 26 of 175), featuring an artist s portrayal of the famous Marilyn Monroe pose which graced the first pages of Playboy magazine, in a cased display box with the late actresses autograph; art by Summer of Love artist Peter Max; and several pieces of Mid-Century Modern furniture. Antiques include an early 19th century carved Belgian blue stone mantel, which once graced one of the grand homes of Baron Rothschild, the head of the wealthy banking family; a pair of large Chinese spinachgreen jade brush pots; a Qing Dynasty monumental polychrome vase; a mahogany corner pub bar; and Greek pottery. The sale will offer several religious icons from the Fr. Dimitri Callozzo Religious Icon Collection, in addition to several religious statues and other artifacts. Of specific interest is The Mail Pouch Tobacco Estate Collection which comes from the estate of Edouard S. Ziegler and his wife Simone Jaguin Ziegler. The Zieglers, who made their final home in Wheeling, W.Va., were world travelers and dual French-U.S. citizens. Edouard was the grandson of Samuel, who together with his brother Aaron Bloch, founded Bloch Brothers Tobacco Co., in Wheeling in The brothers later developed Mail Pouch Tobacco, a popular chewing tobacco sold in a paper sack resembling a mail pouch. During the late 19th and 20th centuries, hundreds of barns were painted with a Mail Pouch Tobacco advertisement ( Chew Mail Pouch Tobacco/Treat yourself to the best ) throughout the Ohio River Valley. There will be about 100 items of historical Mail Pouch items sold. Contact: (412) Kimball Sterling offers massive 40-year collection that the kids don t want any of this stuff, so we re going to sell it. Our kids aren t interested, the consignor said. He said he didn t know what he would do with his spare time, once his collections are sold. Maybe I ll collect something like stamps or pocketknives, he said. My friends all told me that things I collect are way too big. Back in earlier days, he and his wife drove the roads sometimes for four days or so buying whatever struck his eye. He worked on restoring and preserving nearly every piece of his collection for well over 40 years. There are some works in progress that will be sold also. I just bought whatever I wanted, he says. I mean, I wasn t a full-time collector. But I bought a lot of things. And more importantly, he restored, preserved and hung on to nearly all of it (he admits, he might have sold 10 pieces over the years), in nearly mint-like condition. At first, I liked tractors and started buying them. They looked good in the barn, he says. Then, there were the Left: Vintage neon and porcelain Frigidaire sign is a rare sight these days. Oct. 27 will feature a warehouse auction at 10 a.m. in Decherd, Tenn. After that, Sterling will conduct a barn auction scheduled at Belvidere, Tenn., about 10 minutes from Decherd. The 2-day sale should see about 1,200-1,500 lots sell, Sterling said, while verbally musing, I may get it down to 1,200. People will want to be getting here for two days, Sterling said. The Friday (Oct. 27) sales are going to be really good. There s going to be a lot of box lots. I like to sell by the box and then they ll be a lot of five-piece and 10-piece lots. The sale is comprised of advertising items, architectural, bicycles, barbershop, neon, toys, country store items, soda pop memorabilia, wagons, tractors, coin-op machines, cash registers, clocks, a large group of Coca- Cola memorabilia and more. The architectural stuff in this auction is really strong, Sterling said. He bought a complete drug store in Alabama, circa 1890s; a late Victorian hardware store; and a great earlier butcher store, with the original back butcher bar. Everything is there for someone decorating a restaurant or just setting up their own storefront. Being from Chattanooga, Mr. Choo Choo was among earlier collectors of Coca-Cola items, having a jump on later collectors, simply because of their proximity to Atlanta. He s really strong there, Sterling said. The Coca-Cola, and other soft drink machines, are another strong aspect of the sale. We ll have as many as 25 machines and many of them old machines are in unbelievably good shape. There s also a big bicycle collection; he had them hanging from the ceiling. They re all in, rated one to 10, in a number 9 condition. We ll also have five soda fountain Dealer From Front Page Affairs, a Hollywood art heist movie where Pierce Brosnan stars as the protagonist. Both Thomas Crown and Jonathan Poole stole the paintings in broad daylight, said prosecutor James Ward. Whilst Thomas Crown stole as a challenge because his world had become too safe, Jonathan Poole stole either to fund a gambling habit, or to stash away money for later life. Some of the artwork involved is still missing, Ward said. Where is the money or the artwork he stole? Is it, like the Nazi gold train, hidden only to be utilized in years to come? To this day, the pieces have never been returned and their location is not known. Ward told the judge, All of the pieces of art are extremely valuable and there is no doubt Poole was well aware of this. Another victim was British art collector and English soccer star Mark Nobel who lost money when Poole undersold two paintings of Jack Nicholson and Kate Moss, works by German contemporary artist Sebastian Kruger that Poole had sold to a English pub. The Moss painting, valued at $38,000, was sold for thousands of dollars less than its value, was later damaged by a drunk diner who slashed the painting with a steak knife. Nobel was never paid and the court returned the two paintings to Nobel. German art collector and financier Andreas Bunnerman lost hundreds of thousands of dollars after asking Poole to sell pieces from his vast art collection. The court was told Poole simply sold some paintings and kept the proceeds as others turned up missing including the 1895 bronze sculpture, Fallen Angel, by French artist Auguste Rodin that was valued at $50,000. Authorities say Bunnerman s missing pieces include the titles Adam, Jete, Icarus, The Shell, Margot Fonteyn, Hand of Christ, Girl Dressing, Nureyev, Nicki Lifesize, Fighting Horses, Carol, and Baigneuse, and works by Enzo Plazzotta, Above: A vintage Western Auto sign condition-wise, it doesn t get any better than this. backbars, representing three periods from Victorian 1880s, to Art Deco to Mid- Century modern. He has a fabulous backbar, with marble, onyx. It s really beautiful. I bought that backbar myself from the old Renfro Valley Barn Dance (established in Eastern Kentucky in 1939, featuring Hank Williams, Hank Snow, Red Foley and other early country music stars) when I was 25 or 27 years old. I brought it back to Johnson City. And, I don t know how he found out I had it it didn t take him long. But, he was right on me for that bar. He was a chaser. I sold it to him. Well, when I saw that backbar here recently, for the first time in about 37 years, I was just stunned. He had it all cleaned-up and restored. It s a gorgeous piece. It s late Victorian, maybe 1880s, and it looks better than when I first saw Study of Marconi Award, and the sculpture, Study for Polly. Also missing were two Jesus Christ masks and an Isadora Duncan Relief. The thefts of Bunnerman s pieces occurred in 2009 from January to December and totaled $400,000, according to testimony. Another Poole victim s was Dire Straits bass guitarist John Illsley. Illsley asked Poole to sell two Miles Davis paintings for at least $35,000, but they changed hands for under $15,000 and Illsley was never paid, according to court officials. Prosecutors said Poole s own brother was also a victim. During the court proceeding, the court had set up a second courtroom to view a number of the unsold paintings and the recovered art pieces as evidence. They included other large works by Kruger and four pieces by Lennon including his famous Peace & Love painting, given to Poole to sell from Lennon s estate by Yoko Ono. The thefts cover nearly 30 years when charges were finally brought in 2013 following complaints against Poole from the artists and collectors. Poole had told some clients that their art had been destroyed in a flood at one of his galleries where he later collected on an insurance claim but kept the proceeds and did not reimburse his clients. The Poole owned Compton Cassey Gallery was formerly the exclusive European agent for Miles Davis s estate which organized exhibitions throughout Europe and the Middle East. Davis was an American jazz trumpeter and composer who died in 1991 at age 65 from bronchial pneumonia. The chief investigator for the case told the Guardian newspaper, Poole was once a successful man and his victims trusted him to take care of their valuable artwork. Sadly, he has now tarnished his good name and he will have to lie with that shame for the rest of his life. Poole told the court his business started to struggle with the advent of the Internet. People would come and if they liked something they would look on the Internet and find a better price for it. Then, there are the oddball pieces: The rolling newsstand, made in New York City, which is capable of opening for business on the sidewalk. Its square box-like case would reveal newspaper and magazine racks, small little drawers for notions, like fingernail clippers, matches, and, perhaps, tobacco. I bet that s worth $3,000-$4,000, Sterling says. Also selling will be several Seeburg jukeboxes, an older (tube) Les Paul amplifier, gas pumps galore, a child s goat cart made of hickory wood from North Carolina, lots of local Chattanooga memorabilia and lighted chandeliers with vertical fans. It s one of the largest single-owner collections ever offered at public auction, Sterling says. It s one of the best sales we ve ever had. The consignor was more plainspoken. I don t want any notoriety, any publicity, the consignor says. Tell them, I m not important, were his final words in an interview with AntiqueWeek. Contact: (423) Above: The story goes that this was purchased by the consignor s mother as a gift to her young son. She only bought the jockey scale after seeing one in England at an enormous price. Upon her return from overseas, she went to a junk shop in Chattanooga where she knew a similar jockey scale had sat for months. She bought it for a fraction of the asking English price, and it began one of the consignor s first pieces.

24 Page 4 National Section Studebaker Avanti drives away with $11,210 bid at Cordier By Carole Deutsch HARRISBURG, Pa. Cars were definitely driving into the winner s circle during Cordier s and Appraisals Aug. 13 auction. The sale was well attended, said Amelia Rundle, Cordier s Administrative Specialist. We had to bring in extra chairs, and many things sold extremely well, but furniture was a soft sell and many bidders got terrific buys. The cars commanded most of the attention. The star among the cars was a 1963 Studebaker Avanti, which was designed as a personal luxury coupe and manufactured for a limited time in 1962 and It was the first of its kind and the standard bearer for all luxury coupes. The Studebaker Company was founded in 1852 as a wagon maker. In 1912 it produced its first gasoline automobile and became known for its advanced technologies and also established a reputation for high quality engineering. However, it came at a cost and Studebaker began to have financial difficulties, which caused them to close their doors in After that, the Avanti, which held 29 records at the Bonneville Salt Flats Speedway, was produced by various companies Below: A stunning 2.16 carat diamond solitaire ring sold well past the catalog estimate, as well as the jeweler s appraisal, when it achieved $18,880, establishing the top lot of the day. as a replica, but the original, of which only a few thousand were produced, is a rare find. The 1963 Studebaker Avanti presented in the auction was the original model that had 83,258 miles, a blue exterior and interior with an AM/FM radio, and power windows. It had an automatic transmission and a R2 engine with a Paxton supercharger. The car had been inspected up until 2014 and was in running condition. It sold with owner s manual for $11,210 to a Florida collector. Other cars of note included a 1978 Mercedes SL sedan with a yellow exterior and olive green interior that was also in running condition and sold for $4,130. A silver five-speed manual transmission 1987 Maserati BiTurbo Si with just over 7,000 miles sold for $7,080. The work, titled Hawk Woman, was done with hand applied color and was signed and dated in pencil with a red seal stamp. Carrying a high estimate of $1,000, the piece opened at $300 and soared to an impressive $7,500. Shiko Munakata was a woodblock printmaker who worked in Japan during the Shōwa period ( ), which is referred to as a period of enlightened peace and harmony. His awards include the Prize of Excellence at the Second International Print Exhibition and the Order of Culture, the highest Japanese honor bestowed in the arts. Among the outstanding silver items was a set of eight Stieff sterling repousse hand chased goblets. They were made in Rose pattern #171, with high relief rose and chrysanthemum decoration. Each was marked Stieff Sterling 171 with a 1928 date mark. The set totaled 57.2 troy ounces and brought $5,546. The price of $5,192 was realized for a late 19th century KPM porcelain plaque, depicting Queen Louise Descending a Stair. It was signed Wagner, impressed with KPM, a sceptre mark, and W N, and had remnants of an early paper label. Queen Louise of Prussia was the wife of King Frederick William III of Prussia and one of the most well-loved figures in German history, who was often referred to as the Queen of Hearts. She earned this title, not only for her captivating beauty and engaging personality, but for her renowned meeting with Napoleon Bonaparte when she visited him to plead for mercy for her country after the Napoleonic Wars. Furniture buyers were in their element at this sale. Fine period pieces, as well as 20th century Modern by iconic makers, were well represented. An Edward Wormley for Dunbar sectional sofa sold at the estimate for $9,440. The split/floating arm sofa, Model 5948, had the original fabric and came with a matching footstool. Many high quality pieces sold for attractive prices. An excellent partners table from the Bennett Mansion in Baltimore, which was used in the mansion s library, had an ornately carved base that stood on paw feet with lion s head masks at the knee. It was an unusual octagonal shape finished with a leather top and sold for $1,298. The same price was paid for a Mid-century Hundevad rosewood bookcase cabinet with seven sections, that included two bookcases with sliding glass doors, two cabinet units, one bookcase with a drop down desk, and two stacks of drawers. Danish designer Poul Hundevad is primarily known for his case pieces. Overall, furniture was a buy, Amelia Rundle noted. A Baker sideboard sold for just $200. It would avail all those looking for furniture to buy at auction all the time. Fine furniture is selling at such reasonable prices at auction that it s well worth getting a U-Haul and driving the distance to an auction house. They would have to drive to the mall anyway and may be purchasing material far below the quality they can get at auction and for higher prices. Above: A woodblock on paper by Shiko Munakata, titled Hawk Woman, sold well past the mark when it soared to an impressive $7,500. The sideboard she referenced was made in the serpentine form out of solid mahogany with inlaid banding, and was fitted with multiple drawers and shelves behind four shaped doors. It exhibited all the style and high quality for which Baker is known. Prices reflect an 18 percent buyer s premium. Contact: Dave Webb Please visit website for additional information Above:: Topping the 20th century Modern items was an Edward Wormley for Dunbar sectional sofa that had the original fabric and sold with a matching footstool for $9,440.
