3 Population Trends and Demographics Detroit is still the largest city in Michigan, with a population estimated at 688,700 in However, Detroit s population has been on a continuous decline since the 1980s: Once the sixth largest city in the US in 1980, Detroit lost about 41 percent of its population over three decades in 2010 or close to half a million people. Between 2000 and 2010 alone, Detroit s population dropped by almost 235,000, or percent. Over the same period, Michigan s population declined by only about 76,000 or -0.8 percent. Since 2010, the population in the city of Detroit has continued to drop, while the state s population is on the rise.
