1 Detroit Public Schools To Graduating Senior Scholars: The following information will help you to determine if you qualify for Compact College funding and provide you with the forms needed to apply for funding to a four-year college program or a community college/job training program. To receive compact funds, you will need to select a post-high school institution from this list. Below are the colleges, universities and job training sites that are included in the Compact program: Michigan Public Institutions Michigan College Foundation (These schools do not guarantee full tuition and fees, see Pg. 3) Central Michigan University Adrian College Kalamazoo College Eastern Michigan University Albion College Madonna University Ferris State University Alma College Marygrove University Grand Valley State University Andrews University Olivet College Michigan State University Calvin College Siena Heights University Michigan Technological University Hillsdale College Spring Arbor University Oakland University University of Michigan Ann Arbor University of Michigan Dearborn Wayne State University Western Michigan University Hope College Non MCF Universities Northwood University University of Detroit Mercy Community Colleges & Job Training Programs Henry Ford Community College Macomb Community College Oakland Community College Schoolcraft Community College Wayne County Community College Focus Hope Training Program 1
2 QUALIFICATIONS FOR COMPACT FUNDS In order to qualify for Compact financial assistance, you must meet the requirements that are based on the type of post-high school education you are seeking. Four Year College Requirements 95% Attendance or better 3.0 or higher cumulative GPA ACT composite of 21 or higher Meet requirements for college admission No major (Class 2 or 3) and no more than 3 Minor (Class 1) Student Code of Conduct violations File a Financial Aid form ( after January 1 st every year If you have met all the requirements for the Compact Program s college/university or job training assistance, you must compile the requested information, complete the forms for the type of school you plan to attend and send all of the information to the Compact Coordinator at your school, or to: Dr. Barbara K. Smith, Director Office of Guidance and Counseling Fisher Bldg., 9th Floor 3011 W. Grand Blvd., Detroit, MI Important: Some students may not qualify for a complete financial aid package and might need to use another source of funds. 2
3 Nonparticipating/Private College and Universities Agreement The Detroit Compact tuition assistance program is a collaboration between the Detroit Regional Chamber, public and private universities and Detroit Public Schools. The majority of the funding for scholarships comes from the universities themselves. Participating public universities guarantee that all tuition and fees will be covered for eligible students. Participating in-state private schools may work with students on an individual basis but DO NOT guarantee that all tuition and fees will be covered, although they typically put together very generous aid packages. Private institutions do not accept transfer students. In your case, you have chosen to attend, a private institution. Therefore the Detroit Compact Program will not be responsible for any short fall in your tuition that may be caused by the university s method of allocating funds. Compact will send $ each year (not to exceed 4 years) as long as you maintain a 2.5 GPA and are full-time (12 credit hours or more.) In your case, you have decided to attend. This is a nonparticipating out of state institution. Compact will award a scholarship in the amount of $ the first and second years only as long as you maintain a 2.5 GPA and are full-time (12 credit hours or more.) If you attend, you will need to find other resources to assist with your tuition. We have agreements with Michigan public universities that may fulfill your tuition assistance needs. Please provide a parent and student signature to this letter along with your completed packet and return to the Compact Coordinator assigned to your school. If you have any questions, please contact: The Detroit Regional Chamber Robert Troutman (313) rtroutman@detroitchamber One Woodward Avenue Detroit, Michigan Student Name (print): : Student Signature: : Parent Signature: : 3
4 TO THE COMPACT SCHOLAR Congratulations on Qualifying for a Compact Scholarship! During early August, you will receive a letter from the Detroit Regional Chamber, the governing agency for the Compact College Assistance Award. The Director of Education and Talent Programs, Robert Troutman, will be your new contact. For your records, his contact information is as follows: The Detroit Regional Chamber Robert Troutman (313) rtroutma@detroitchamber.com One Woodward Avenue Detroit, Michigan Students attending one of the participating public universities will receive their scholarship award as long as they maintain a GPA of 2.5 or better and have full time status (12 credits or more). You will continue to receive your scholarship award each year that you meet these requirements and file a FAFSA. The universities will track this information. Therefore, you do not need to contact Mr. Troutman. However, if you plan to attend a Nonparticipating Compact institution, the scholarship award will be in the amount of $ the first year. The same amount will be awarded in the second year if you maintain a cumulative GPA of a least a 2.5 and have a full time status of at least 12 credits. In order to receive your 2 nd year scholarship award, you must mail or an official transcript from the institution you are attending to the address above. Please send it to the attention of Mr. Robert Troutman. All transcripts must be mailed after the school year is completed. 4
