A guide to our services for universities and governments outside the UK
Enhancing learning and teaching in higher education We work across the global higher education system to bring about changes that improve the quality of teaching and the learning experience for students. The UK has an outstanding reputation in the field of higher education, with our universities globally recognised for their excellence. The Higher Education Academy (HEA) is a UK-based body that is responsible for enhancing teaching and learning support in higher education. We are a national, independent organisation, supported by the UK Government and by subscriptions from higher education providers in the UK and overseas. We work across the global higher education system to bring about changes that improve the quality of teaching and the learning experience for students, helping to ensure the education they receive is world-class. We are proud of our global connections and our international clients value our expertise. We manage the UK Professional Standards Framework for teaching and supporting learning in higher education (UKPSF) and have a proven record of adapting it across international markets for local use through our National Frameworks for Teaching Quality. We commission and conduct high quality research to inform policy and practice. We also offer our international partners consultancy services and a wealth of support and resources for learning and teaching enhancement. We very much look forward to working with you. Professor Stephanie Marshall Chief Executive, The Higher Education Academy Achieving Fellowship of The Higher Education Academy The HEA developed the UK Professional Standards Framework for teaching and supporting learning in higher education (or UKPSF in short) with and for the sector. Launched in 2006, it is the backbone of the HEA s Accreditation and Recognition services and helps to drive improvements in, and raise the profile of, learning and teaching in higher education. HEA Fellowship is an internationally recognised badge of professional competency for those who teach and support learning in higher education. Individuals can apply directly to the HEA for professional recognition on the basis of their experience in teaching or learning support. The HEA also offers an accreditation service exclusively to our subscribing institutions. This means that individuals, upon successful completion of an institutional professional development programme accredited by the HEA, are eligible to be awarded Fellowship.
A summary of the HEA s international services We ve designed our services to meet your professional requirements based on particular roles and responsibilities. This way, you can see at a glance which services are most appropriate to your specific requirements. We have significant experience of working in partnership with governments and ministries to develop and enhance national higher education systems. We also collaborate extensively with universities to bring about change at institutional and departmental levels to improve the student experience. Furthermore, we support individual professional development, making it easy for staff to keep up to date with latest international thinking and best practice in learning and teaching. Our international services at a glance governments and ministries universities Senior leaders Managers of learning and teaching Faculty staff (new and experienced teachers) National Frameworks for Teaching Quality Leading Learning and Teaching in Higher Education Certificate in Learning and Teaching in Higher Education Skills development workshops Fellowship writing workshop (Senior / Principal Fellowship) Professional recognition online Curriculum development programme HEA subscription Teaching skills masterclasses The four categories of Fellowship Higher education professionals are eligible to apply for Fellowship of the HEA by demonstrating that they meet the requirements of one of the four descriptors contained in the UKPSF: Associate Fellow (AFHEA); Fellow (FHEA); Senior Fellow (SFHEA) or Principal Fellow (PFHEA). Associate Fellow For staff new to teaching or with some responsibility to support learning and teaching, an HEA Associate Fellowship recognises your commitment and contribution to student learning and your professional development. Fellow For staff who are established and have a broad base in learning and teaching and who can provide evidence of their effectiveness through reflection. Senior Fellow For staff who have a sustained record of effectiveness in relation to learning and teaching through leadership and management of aspects of learning and teaching provision. Principal Fellow For highly experienced staff with a sustained and effective record of impact at a strategic level in relation to learning and teaching, within and beyond their institution. 3
Senior university leaders You have high-level strategic responsibility for learning and teaching and the student experience, perhaps as a President, a Rector, a Dean, a Pro Vice-Chancellor, a Vice-Chancellor or equivalent, and are looking to develop your leadership skills. Leading Learning and Teaching in Higher Education (LLTHE) Our LLTHE programme is designed for universities outside the UK that are looking to enhance their leadership capacity and consolidate their understanding of the dynamic higher education landscape. The programme is designed to support staff in leadership and executive roles with responsibilities covering education, learning and teaching and the student experience. They may be looking to redesign or refresh their university corporate strategies in line with rapidly changing external environments as well as local quality assurance processes. Duration: five to ten days. Fellowship writing workshop (Senior / Principal Fellowship) The HEA is committed to supporting individuals in becoming Fellows of the HEA. Our Fellowship writing workshops are aimed at individuals who seek to benefit from focused and dedicated time to apply for recognition as a Senior Fellow or Principal Fellow. We provide delegates with a structured environment in which they: engage in critical reflection about their professional practice; share issues and discuss experiences with regard to their Fellowship application with peers; have space and time to progress their thinking and drafting of the narrative for their chosen category of Fellowship and future training requirements; benefit from one-to-one expert support from HEA staff to assist them with action-planning and next steps. Duration: three days. Doug Pearce, the HEA s International Development Manager, signing a contract with Dr Ahmed Yamani, the Rector of Prince Sultan University (PSU), in Saudi Arabia, where the HEA is developing a Certificate of Learning and Teaching over a three-year period which will be eventually accredited by the HEA. PSU, a private university based in Riyadh, sees this as a pivotal point in raising standards for faculty staff development at the university. 4
Managers of learning and teaching You have management responsibilities perhaps as a Head of Department or a Director of Learning and Teaching or a support service. You seek to enhance your institution s teaching provision, to develop and inspire teaching staff and also to develop your own management skills. Certificate in Learning and Teaching in Higher Education (CLTHE) We have designed the CLTHE to enable HE providers, who do not currently have continuing professional development (CPD) provision for staff, to set up appropriate programmes. This bespoke certificate will help staff to become more effective and reflective professionals and therefore lead to better learning outcomes for students. Through the certificate, we will build your institution s internal staff development capacity so that you will eventually be in the position of having your CPD accredited by the HEA. In Year 1, we will design and run the programme, in Year 2, we will team-teach it with your staff and in Year 3, we will support you to get the CLTHE accredited. Duration: two to three years. Teaching skills masterclasses Our masterclasses offer clients an opportunity to create their own staff training programme. They are designed to address fundamental areas of learning, teaching and assessment in higher education today and you can choose from a wide range of workshops, including: lecturing for the 21 st century student; flipping the lecture; making feedback effective; teaching for reflective learning; teaching in a multi-cultural environment and teaching with emotional intelligence. Duration: two to five days. Curriculum development programme This programme provides participants with the understanding and skills needed to develop an outcomes-based curriculum. We will work with you to train programme directors on how to design and implement such a curriculum that encourages innovative teaching and enables students to develop critical thinking skills and enhance their employability prospects. The visit can be expanded to analyse your existing curricula and develop an action plan for future transformation. Duration: two days. Fellowship writing workshop (Senior / Principal Fellowship) See details in the Senior university leaders section (page 4). HEA subscription An international subscription to the HEA gives you and your institution access to a unique network of expertise, support and resources, helping you to deliver the best possible learning and teaching experience for your students. International subscription is available to organisations providing university-level education outside the UK. As well as access to a network of HEA experts with wide experience of academic leadership and practice, around 800 Associates and some 60,000 Fellows *, international subscription entitles you to: an annual visit focused around your priorities in learning and teaching; a dedicated point of contact at the HEA; discounted rates for HEA consultancy; accreditation of one professional development scheme against the UKPSF per three-year cycle; professional recognition for individual teaching staff on completion of an HEA-accredited scheme; discounted rates for staff who apply for Fellowship via the HEA s individual experience route; discounted rates for attendance at the HEA s events, conferences and workshops (including live-streamed events and webinars); access to the HEA s Network of Deputy Vice-Chancellors, Pro Vice-Chancellors and Vice-Principals. * as of January
Faculty staff You want to enhance your own teaching practice and gain international recognition as a high-quality teaching professional. You are either: An experienced academic, taking increasing responsibility for learning and teaching perhaps as a course leader or senior tutor or: A newly appointed academic, in your first three years of teaching, and beginning to get to grips with the challenges. Skills development workshops These workshops are aimed specifically at individual teaching staff wishing to improve their skills or to be recognised for their teaching quality. During the sessions, participants will be exposed to how UK institutions and staff handle similar challenges. We offer two-day workshops on the following topics: Embedding employability skills in the curriculum Through the use of case studies, participants will be shown how changing the curriculum with employability in mind can have a positive impact on students. Using small-group activities, the programme will actively engage delegates as they learn about the five key elements in designing an outcomes-based curriculum. Developing innovative pedagogy This flexible programme offers an opportunity for academic staff to enhance their practice by engaging with ideas and approaches to learning and teaching which are potentially transformative. Achieving professional recognition Staff will be supported in making a successful application for Fellowship. Participants will be given the opportunity to reflect on the quality and effectiveness of their professional practice and share their experiences with the other delegates. Teaching skills masterclasses See details in the Managers of learning and teaching section (page 5). Professional recognition online Applying for HEA Fellowship via the experienced route is popular, particularly for those who work independently or for individuals working for higher education providers that do not have HEA-accredited provision. You can apply to the HEA directly by setting up an account in the My Academy section of the HEA website: The application process consists of an account of professional practice of between 1,400 and 7,500 words, the written support of two referees and payment of a fee where applicable. On behalf of Lasalle College of the Arts, I would like to express our deep appreciation for the skills development workshop you recently ran for our staff. We hope the workshop will contribute towards our academic colleagues continuously exploring and developing innovative pedagogies and reflecting on and articulating their innovative and risktaking teaching and learning practices. Thanks once again! Agnes Wan Pek Yuet, Director, Division of Human Resources, Lasalle College of the Arts, Singapore 6
Services for governments and ministries National Frameworks for Teaching Quality (NFTQ) We also support governments and ministries across the world to develop professional standards frameworks in higher education learning and teaching, refining the wellestablished approach used in the UK to meet your specific cultural, operational or policyrelated needs. As global leaders in learning and teaching enhancement, we are uniquely positioned to advise on the approach that best meets your needs, drawing on our experiences of advising on and implementing such continuing professional development frameworks in the UK and across the world. Enhancing learning and teaching in Bahrain Working with the Higher Education Council at the Ministry of Education, the HEA is developing a bespoke version of its model for the continuing professional development of teaching and support staff in Bahrain. Over the next four years, the HEA is helping to deliver the framework to over 800 academics in 12 universities in the Kingdom. Typically, our approach would involve four stages: i establishing a national Professional Standards Framework. Implementing such a framework will raise teaching standards nationally and enable benchmarking of your teaching staff with those in the UK; ii developing a National Centre for Teaching Excellence. We will work with you to identify, train and mentor a select group to manage the development and roll-out of your Professional Standards Framework; iii development of a Certificate of Learning and Teaching in Higher Education. Skills gaps will be identified for individual teachers and addressed through the development of bespoke training programmes. These programmes can be developed nationally or on an institution by institution basis; iv skills development workshops. We will run a series of two-day workshops with key staff to provide training in priority areas such as Fellowship applications, curriculum design and innovative pedagogy. Through our experience, we know that establishing such a framework on a national basis is a significant investment in time and effort. Implementing the framework will generally take between two and three years and the HEA will work closely with you throughout your journey. The Crown Prince of Bahrain, H.R.H. Prince Salman bin Hamad Al-Khalifa, The Rt Hon Baroness Warsi, Senior Minister of State at the Foreign & Commonwealth Office and Professor Stephanie Marshall, Chief Executive of the HEA, at a signing ceremony in October 2013 to mark the launch of the initiative. The HEA s expertise in developing a framework for the UK, whose higher education sector enjoys a fantastic reputation world-wide, means it s ideally placed to help us develop and embed a framework here in Bahrain. Providing a robust framework for continuing professional development (CPD) is key in supporting our university teaching and support staff in their careers and in enhancing and maintaining the best possible standards in our higher education sector. Dr Riyad Hamzah, General Secretary of the Higher Education Council, Kingdom of Bahrain Ministry of Education 7
The Australian National University is proud to be the first institutional member of the HEA in Australia. Our mutual work in introducing Fellowships is already catching the attention of the sector and we are delighted to be driving this innovation together.
