1 Loyola University Chicago Athletics Summer School Financial Aid Policy Purpose of Summer Financial Aid Summer financial aid is not an entitlement or part of a student-athlete s academic year financial aid agreement. The purpose of summer financial aid is to assist student-athletes in making progress towards their degree (and not to pursue an additional minor, second degree, or master s degree). Loyola University Chicago s Department of Athletics is committed to facilitating and supporting each studentathlete's active pursuit of a college degree and has provided financial aid to student-athletes to attend summer school in order to accommodate that goal. Given the demands on schedules due to practice conflicts and travel schedules for away competitions, some courses needed to complete graduation requirements (especially for very prescribed majors) may be unavailable during the academic year. As a result, summer school may be the solution to insure graduation for the student in four years, which is the university standard. The Athletics Department will provide aid for summer school according to the following guidelines. The Senior Associate Director of Athletics Student Services must approve exceptions to the following. Aid will only be awarded with the approval of the Director of Athletics with input from the Senior Associate AD Student Services and support from the head coach, and is subject to available funding to be confirmed with Athletics Finance Office. Aid will only be provided to those student-athletes who meet NCAA Manual requirements and Missouri Valley Conference Missouri Valley Conference Bylaws. Student-athletes needing to attend summer school in order to meet eligibility standards must have given their full cooperation to college, departmental and athletics department personnel in all academic and athletic matters during the academic year. To receive summer school aid the student-athlete must complete and sign the summer school application (Attachment 1) along with an updated four year plan for graduation, the terms and conditions (Attachment 2) and the grant-in-aid agreement (Attachment 3). Aid may only be provided to those students who received aid during the preceding academic year. Student-athletes who average less than 15 credits per semester and/or have multiple failures, incompletes, withdrawals and/or multiple study hall violations may not be awarded summer school aid. Approval Criteria Recommendations for awarding summer school aid will be based on an evaluation of the following criteria, including, but not limited to: Availability of funds and fulfillment of academic and team obligations; Upperclassmen standing (junior and senior); Previous history of following summer school policy; Specialized majors such as nursing, education, majors with multiple lab requirements; Availability of necessary classes (e.g. only offered during summer/required internship programs, conflicts with practice or travel schedules); Continuing eligibility requirements (e.g. the need for 18/24 hours of classes per academic year); 1 P a g e

2 Grades achieved in previous course work; Course(s) enrolled in previously and dropped (e.g. reasons for dropping); Course completion necessary for graduation following summer session; Increased likelihood of graduating in less than four years with attendance during summer sessions; or Summer school aid is not intended to assist students in earning double majors or additional minors. Student-athletes who receive financial aid for the summer term and who, subsequent to the first day of classes for the summer term, drop below their approved credit hours will be charged for the amount of tuition which the athletics department is unable to recoup. This charge will go directly to the studentathlete's account. Any charges incurred as a result of enrollment in additional credits not approved by athletics as written in the summer grant in aid agreement are the responsibility of the student-athlete. Student-athletes who earn below a C- grade in a course (i.e. D, F, W or WF) may be required to reimburse the department of athletics for the expense incurred for the course (tuition, room, board, fees and books). Students are encouraged to apply for positions such as orientation leaders and positions assisting residential life to help fund summer school tuition and/or related expenses. Head count sports (men s and women s basketball and women s volleyball) Only head count sports will receive room, board, fees and books in addition to their tuition. Men s and women s basketball receive aid for Summer Session II only unless there is a clear exception needed, and, funding is available. Men s and women s basketball may receive up to two courses in Summer Session II. Meal plans will be funded at the amount determined by the Athletics Finance Office and approved by the Director of Athletics. A coach may choose to fund the additional costs for a higher value meal plan at his or her discretion, but the funds will be allocated to cover the difference in the cost of the meal plan from that sport s operating budget. Equivalency Sports Equivalency sports will receive aid in the amount of the percentage of aid received during the academic year for tuition only if funding is available per the Athletics Finance Office. All equivalency sports will receive aid for Summer Session I only unless there is a clear exception needed, and, funding is available. 2 P a g e

4 ATTACHMENT 2 Summer Session(s) Athletic Grant-in-Aid Summary of Principle Terms and Conditions Summary of Applicable NCAA Summer Financial Aid Rules (a): Summer financial aid may be awarded only to attend Loyola University Chicago s Summer Sessions provided the student has been in residence a minimum of one term and during the regular academic year : A student-athlete who is eligible for institutional financial aid during the summer is not required to be enrolled in a minimum full-time program of studies. However, the student-athlete may not receive financial aid that exceeds the cost of a fullgrant in aid for attendance in that summer term : A student-athlete may not receive athletically-related financial aid to attend Loyola University Chicago s summer term unless the student-athlete received such athletically-related aid from Loyola University Chicago during the student-athlete s previous academic year. Further, athletics aid for summer school may be awarded only in proportion (lesser than or equal to) to the amount of athletically-related financial aid received by the student-athlete during the previous academic year except that this proportionality restriction shall not apply to a student-athlete who has exhausted his or her eligibility and is enrolled in a summer program of studies that will permit the student-athlete to complete his or her requirements : An institution that conducts multiple summer sessions may not award athletically related financial aid to attend any one session that exceeds the proportion of the amount of athletically related financial aid received by the student-athlete during the previous academic year : Prospective student-athletes (PSA) must meet the following conditions to be awarded financial aid the summer prior to initial, full-time enrollment: a) PSA must be admitted to Loyola University Chicago in accordance with regular entrance requirements; b) PSA is enrolled in a minimum of six hours of academic course work (other than physical education) that is acceptable credit toward any of Loyola s degree programs. c) Summer coursework is not used for the purpose of completing initial-eligibility or continuing-eligibility requirements. The athletic grant-in-aid may be immediately reduced or cancelled during the term of the award if you: Fraudulently misrepresent any information on your application, letter of intent, financial aid agreement or FAFSA Become academically ineligible for intercollegiate competition (i.e., drop below 12 credit hours, do not maintain progress toward degree, etc.) Commit an NCAA Violation or engage in serious misconduct that results in disciplinary action by the university s regular student disciplinary authority Voluntarily withdraw from your sport for personal reasons The athletic grant-in-aid MUST be reduced or cancelled if: You sign a professional sports contract for your respective sport Accept money for playing in an athletic contest that causes you to exceed the cost of a full athletic grant-in-aid Agree to be represented by an agent and accept money that causes you to exceed the cost of a full athletic grant-in-aid Receive other aid that causes you to exceed your individual limit Loyola Requirements 1. Class attendance is mandatory. 2. Authorization from Athletic Academic Services is required to add or drop a class. 3. Students are expected to pass their summer session classes with a grade of C- or better. Students receiving a D, F, WF or W may be required to reimburse the institution for the athletic aid and may not be eligible for Summer sessions aid in subsequent years or for a 5 th year of athletics aid per the discretion of the Director of Athletics. 4. Book usage will be authorized according to the LUC Book Return Policy. 5. A summer housing application for a double room, which includes the declining balance meal plan appropriate for that particular session, must be completed if room and board is included in your award. No additional dining dollars can be added. A student-athlete registering for a single room will incur the difference in cost between a single and double room. This award is subject to your fulfillment of the admission and financial aid requirements of the university and the NCAA eligibility requirements for athletic competition and financial aid. 3.
