3 Reverse Engineering The process of analyzing a subject system to (i) identify the system components and their inter-relationships and (ii) create representations of the system in another form or at a higher level of abstraction. [Chikofsky, Cross 90]

4 System modernization How applications become legacy? Virtually every company has legacy applications of some form Often companies don t have enough money for new projects because existing applications cost too much to operate and maintain Only some legacy applications will be reusable: which is the right level of granularity to support reuse? 5 Issues in Migration to SOA Environments The characteristics of SOA enable the exposure of legacy system functionality as services. Presumably without making significant changes to the legacy systems How we can identify the services? Compose Services dinamically at run time Services executed within a tightly constrained environment What about test applications that use services? What happens with COBOL systems? What about Security concerns?

6 SMART: The Service-Oriented Migration and Reuse Technique SEI-CMU SMART analyzes the viability of reusing legacy components as the basis for services by answering these questions: What services make sense to develop? Which service granularity to use? What components can be mined to derive these services? What changes are needed to accomplish the migration? What migration strategies are most appropriate? What are the preliminary estimates of cost and risk?

11 Software Portfolio Analysis Software portfolio analysis establishes measures of technical quality and business value for a set of software systems and evaluates this set against these measures. Technical quality measures technical characteristics such as maintainability and technology state Business value measures support for the organization s business goals Legacy systems are evaluated against these measures and positioned on a portfolio analysis graph.

12 APM solutions 20 % of large enterprises will implemente a disciplined APM strategy by 2007 [Gartner 2005] the APM market is growing rapidly, expected to hit $400 million by 2008 [Forrester 2006] The early adopters of APM are finding ROI in the first year and saving ranging form % of their maintenance budget APM helps enterprise cut costs and make better use of IT resources by monitoring and controlling their portfolio of enterprise applications.
