Business Runs in Real Time Real-time data access is driving business transformation for enterprises large and small in every industry. Customers want to experience information in dynamic new ways, for instance: In banking, it used to be sufficient to send monthly account statements to customers by mail. Today, customers want to logon and interact with their accounts in real time. They want to look at transactions over a specified range of dates from historical to up to the minute and view the latest statistics for stocks, bonds and mutual funds. For power companies, it used to be sufficient to send meter readers to homes every month for billing purposes. Today, they are adopting wireless meters that allow customers to monitor energy usage in real time, correlate it with appliance usage and optimize their energy consumption. Meter readers are no longer needed. Real-time data access opens the door to new business opportunities and revenue streams, new products and services, lower operating costs, better customer experiences and ultimately greater success. According to IDC, nearly 40 percent of CIOs selected virtualization and consolidation as their top IT priorities, while Gartner reports that virtualization and the trends it has enabled, such as big data, cloud computing and VDI, make up the majority of top technology priorities for CIOs. Figure 1: CIO Technology Priorities for 2013 (Source: Gartner) Technology 2013 Rank Analytics and business intelligence [includes Big Data] 1 Mobile computing 2 Cloud computing and SaaS 3 Collaboration and w orkf low 4 Legacy modernization 5 IT management 6 CRM 7 Virtualization [includes VDI] 8 Security 9 ERP 10 Macro technology trends like big data, virtualization, VDI and cloud computing represent technological stepping stones toward real-time data access and business transformation. Big data platforms analyze extremely large data sets for insight and actionable intelligence. Virtualization partitions physical servers into multiple virtual machines, providing workload consolidation, mobility, flexible provisioning and more efficient use of IT resources. VDI does away with traditional PCs and consolidates user desktops into virtual machines on centrally managed servers, simplifying desktop administration, allowing for thin or zero clients, and enhancing availability and security of user desktops and data. Cloud computing builds on virtualization and delivers IT as a service. Whether cloud service providers offering software or infrastructure as a service, enterprises building private clouds, or the agile use of both, cloud computing promises the ultimate in flexibility, quality of service and cost-effective IT. 3
However, these technology present challenges of extreme scale and performance. Big data, virtualization, VDI and cloud computing are essentially software innovations that push the limits of the underlying IT infrastructure, demanding the highest throughput and capacity to deliver on their promises. To meet this demand, infrastructure vendors must continually innovate and develop more scalable and robust computer architectures as well as faster, higher-capacity processors, memory, networking connections and storage arrays. Performance Limitations of Disk Drives Exceptionally high random IOPS is a necessity for real-time data access and the other macro technology trends, but traditional disk-based SAN arrays are unable to deliver the needed performance. The limiting factor in disk drives is the physically spinning media in disk drives. It seems like an anachronism that in the modern data center there is still a major component that operates like a vinyl record player, where random I/O performance are limited by rotational speeds (i.e. latency) and head placement (i.e. seek time). Moore s Law, the doubling of silicon chip transistor density every 18 months or so, has driven the rapid historical development of CPU and memory performance. However, it does not apply to disk drives. Latency and seek time determine random I/O performance (IOPS) for disk drives, and areal density determines sequential throughput (MB/s). Annual growth in disk latency has flat-lined and seek time improves only about 5% per year, so IOPS improves less than 4% per year. Disk areal density grows 25-40% annually, which translates to modest 10-15% growth in MB/s. The net effect is that, compared to the exponential CPU and memory growth afforded by Moore s Law, disk drive performance has lagged and created a very large IOPS performance gap (see Figure 1 below). Since IOPS is the key to nextgeneration computing technologies, disk drives have become the performance bottleneck in computer architecture. Figure 2: Disk Drive Performance vs. Moore s Law Chip transistor density ( CPU & memory performance) Disk drive MB/s Performance Moore s Law Disk IOPS performance gap Disk drive IOPS Disk media Time Each disk drive delivers around 75 to 200 IOPS, depending on type and rotational speed. Traditional methods of increasing random IOPS, such as striping data across a large number of drives and shortstroking (placing data only on outer sectors), require purchasing significantly more capacity than is utilized. This leads to wasted capacity and high operating costs to provide power, cooling and data center rack space for a large number of drives (see Figure 3 below). 4
Another technique to mask slow disk performance is the use DRAM caches in storage arrays. When the write cache fills up or when a read operation does not involve select data staged in cache, the result is a cache miss that incurs the additional latency of disk access. As a result, performance becomes unpredictable, a problem exacerbated by operations such as backups and batch jobs which clear the cache of useful data. Figure 3: Capacity Purchased vs. Utilized Disk Striping & Short-Stroking Capacity Capacity purchased Capacity utilized Wasted storage capacity Cost / Performance What If Storage Could Run at the Speed of Memory? The transition from spinning disk to solid-state is already underway. --Steve O Donnell, ESG NAND flash memory has emerged as the heir apparent to hard disk drives for high-performance enterprise storage. Flash media has been widely used for many years in consumer applications such as mobile phones, cameras and MP3 players. More recently its power has been harnessed for hard disk replacement for PCs and ultimately enterprise storage. Flash is solid-state memory, built from silicon integrated circuits instead of magnetic platters. However, like disk drives but unlike DRAM, flash memory is persistent and retains stored data when power is removed. It delivers dramatically faster performance than disk drives, especially for random reads and writes. While disk drive latency is measured in milliseconds, flash is measured in microseconds. Flash is also more energy-efficient and consumes a small fraction of the power used by disk drives, making it the right choice for green or power-constrained data centers. Flash excels at price/iops. Although capacity pricing for disk drives is less, flash storage costs less for I/O-intensive applications because achieving equivalent performance with disk drives requires over-buying capacity and subsequently over-spending on operating expenses. For real-time data access, the storage metric to optimize is price/iops. The old metric of price/gb is more appropriate for backup and archival storage and some light workloads. 5
Figure 3: Flash Memory Characteristics The Best of Disk and DRAM Imagine if your storage could run at the speed of memory, if storage I/O constraints were lifted in an allsilicon data center. What opportunities could your business seize in the real-time world? For example: Increase virtual desktop boot-up and access times by 4x, scale to 1,000s of desktops, decrease power, cooling and floor space by 35x and cut TCO by 50% compared to traditional storage. Process queries of very large datasets in seconds instead of hours or days, increasing operational efficiency and enabling real time scheduling of activities all at a fraction of the cost to do this with existing infrastructure. The good news is you don t have to imagine anymore. Violin Memory Delivers Storage at the Speed of Memory Violin flash Memory Arrays deliver storage at the speed of memory, shattering the storage I/O bottleneck, accelerating business critical applications and enabling fully virtualized and optimized IT infrastructures. Designed for sustained performance with high reliability, Violin flash Memory Arrays scale to petabytes of storage and millions of IOPS with low, spike-free latency. Next-Generation Flash Architecture Violin flash Memory Arrays are all-silicon shared storage systems built from the ground up chip to chassis to harness the full power of flash memory and deliver memory-like performance with data access latencies measured in microseconds, a full order of magnitude lower than legacy Tier 1 storage solutions. These systems are plug-compatible with existing infrastructure, supporting Fibre Channel, iscsi, Infiniband and PCIe connectivity. At the system s core lies a resilient, highly available deep mesh of thousands of flash dies that work in concert to continuously optimize performance, latency, and longevity: Violin Intelligent Memory Modules (VIMM) organize individual dies into intelligent flash management units with garbage collection, wear leveling and error/fault management. VIMMs are integrated into the patented Violin Switched Memory (vxm) architecture, designed from the ground-up for power efficiency and performance. The vxm layer and VIMMs work in conjunction with vraid, Violin s patented hardware-based RAID algorithm specifically designed to increase reliability and reduce latency. Collectively, these deeply integrated layers make up the Violin Flash Memory Fabric, which delivers industry leading performance, % availability and ultra-dense capacity. 6
Figure 4: Violin Flash Memory Fabric Customers benefit from reduced storage costs because less equipment is needed and less power, cooling and floor space are consumed. Enhanced performance also increases server utilization, so fewer servers and software licenses are needed. In contrast, legacy storage vendors are encumbered by disk-based architectures that substitute SSDs for HDDs and layer on complex software workarounds like automated storage tiering to achieve only diskplus performance with millisecond latencies (see Figure 5). Figure 5: Violin Memory vs. Legacy Storage Vendors 7
Violin Flash Memory Storage Products Portfolio Violin 6000 Series flash Memory Arrays Violin 6000 Series flash Memory Arrays deliver up to 1 million IOPS, latency as low as 100 µsec and up to 32TB of raw flash capacity in only 3 Rack Units (3U). They include 6 different models with a variety of capacity and performance profiles to fit customer workloads. The 6600 Series uses single-level cell (SLC) flash memory for maximum performance, and the 6200 Series uses multi-level cell (MLC) for optimal density and capacity. Violin Velocity PCIe Memory Cards Violin Velocity PCIe Memory Cards deliver flash storage with superior application performance and spikefree low latency in a widely deployable PCIe form factor. It is the first PCIe flash product to deliver these benefits in addition to having very low server overhead and footprint. Velocity Memory Cards are available in a variety of form factors and performance profiles and offer up to 8TB of usable capacity and 500,000 IOPS. They are self-healing in the event of media failures, allowing uninterrupted application service. The All-Flash Impact: Benchmark Performance Records When leading technology vendors like HP, IBM, Oracle and VMware want to set performance records for industry benchmarks like TPC-C, TPC-E and VMmark, they build their test configurations with Violin flash Memory Arrays. For the simple reason that nothing else is faster. Figure 6: Storage of Choice for Performance Records 8
Violin Memory s Proven Record in Every Industry Violin has a proven record of successful business transformation enabling new revenue models, reducing operating costs and improving customer experiences for enterprises in all major industries, including Fortune 500 leaders. The Violin customers DataQuick and Anglia Ruskin University are profiled below. DataQuick: Performance-Driven Cost Savings for Data Processing DataQuick, a leading national information processing company, needed to boost the I/O performance of its massive SQL Server database containing 280 million real estate transactions. Rather than continue to add servers and SAN disk storage, DataQuick migrated the most demanding workloads to Violin flash Memory Arrays. As a result, data extract times fell from 6 to 1.5 hours, database refreshes from 12 to 2.2 hours, and an 8 million record processing job went from 8 hours to 10 minutes. They even reduced costs by consolidating from 13 to only 2 servers and slashing SQL Server licensing. In short, Violin Memory delivered enormously faster job times, better client service and lower IT costs! Violin has changed our operational workflow. They ve actually solved a logistics problem for us. Before, we had to carefully prepare for large jobs. Now, we don t even think about them... It s a game changer. --Stanley Wu, VP of Operations, DataQuick Anglia Ruskin University: Fast, Energy-Efficient Virtual Desktops at Lower TCO Anglia Ruskin University in the UK needed to provide new desktops capable of responsive video presentation and user experience, while in a building with no additional cooling, so traditional PCs were not an option. The university chose VDI based on VMware View, zero clients and a Violin flash Memory Array capable of 20 times the random write performance of a SAN disk array. As a result, the new virtual desktops delivered 30-40% power savings, boot times reduced by nearly 90%, and a desktop experience nearly indistinguishable from a traditional PC. At 500 or more users, the VDI capital expenditure was comparable to traditional PCs, while yearly support and maintenance costs were lower. After considering several options we chose a Violin flash Memory Array. Storage performance is key to VDI and our existing traditional spinning disk did not offer good enough performance. --Gregor Waddell, Assistant Director, Anglia Ruskin University Ready to Run Your Business At the Speed of Memory?
