We offer HE in a wide variety of subject areas: Art and Design Business & Management Computing & Games Design Construction Education & Care Music & Media Psychology & Criminology HE courses are offered at the Walkden, Pendleton and City Skills Sixth Form Centres and at our centre at MediaCityUK, FutureSkills. For those opting to pay their fees directly, rather than take out a loan, we offer instalment plans. You can choose how long you want to study for - The College offers intermediate HE awards such as foundation degrees and HNCs. These courses are perfect for those who aren t sure whether they want to commit to full three or four year degree programmes. Once you have completed your foundation degree or HNC you can opt to top up your qualification (e.g. to a full honours degree) or walk away with a recognised and respected intermediate HE qualification. Learners on courses awarded by our partner universities are able to access facilities and services at four College centres and also at our partner University campuses. This gives you the opportunity to combine the benefits of studying in a College environment such as small class sizes, regular access to your tutors and affordable tuition fees, with the academic and social benefits of accessing the facilities at a large University. UNIVERSITY OF SALFORD The College and the University have recently extended their existing partnership to collaborate on the development of a suite of innovative foundation degrees and degree models. The University is a close neighbour of the College, making accessing University services and facilities particularly convenient for learners studying on our University of Salford Foundation Degrees and degree models. The University is located in two main areas of the city: at Salford Crescent, a short distance from Manchester city centre, and at MediaCityUK. Both campuses are easily accessible from all College centres by public transport. The University is a short drive or a bus ride from Walkden Sixth Form Centre where our Bolton programmes are delivered. The College currently offers Teacher Education and Early Years programmes in partnership with the University. There are well established progression routes for learners who wish to continue their studies at the Bolton main campus. 6 6 Art and Design Level 4 Pre-Degree Foundation Diploma This intensive one year diploma allows learners to explore the many areas of art and design before choosing one in which to specialise. It is ideal preparation for entry on to an art and design based degree course. Mode: Duration: The course has three stages: Pendleton Sixth Form Centre Full-time 1 year Stage 1: Exploratory Through a structured programme of drawing and visual studies, learners will identify their skills, strengths and interests. They will also develop practical abilities in 2D and 3D, helping to make an informed choice of specialist study. Stage 2: Pathway Learners choose to study one broad art and design discipline, such as graphic design, textiles, fine art, animation, photography or 3D design. Stage 3: Confirmatory Learners will bring together their skills, knowledge and understanding in art, design and communication to carry out a major project, resulting in an exhibition. Learners will be assessed on a continuous basis throughout the course. Methods employed will include assessment of responses to set briefs which will be used to help develop a portfolio and assessment of exhibition and curation. Applicants should hold a Level 3 qualification in a relevant art and design subject (at least 1 AS Level at grade D or above or Level 3 Diploma Pass). All applicants will be interviewed and expected to bring a portfolio of their work. Mature applicants (over the age of 21) will be considered on an individual basis. 7 7 Graphic Design Foundation Degree This course provides an opportunity to develop the intellectual, creative and technical skills required to be a successful contemporary practitioner in the graphic design industry. Mode: Duration: Pendleton Sixth Form Centre Full-time 2 years Learners will be provided with training in the essential skills of visual communication and will have the opportunity to explore a range of visual communication forms including illustration, print, typography, photography and computer aided graphic design. Through this integrated approach, learners will be provided with a foundation in the skills required for a range of careers in graphic design and related fields. The course is assessed largely through practical work produced in response to time specific and industry-related briefs. Employer and client engagement will be a key feature of the course; learners will develop portfolios in response to client and agency briefs. At the end of the course learners will set up their own professional exhibition. Practical work is supported with study of art and design history and contemporary professional practice. Modules include: Visual Communication Typography Personal Professional Development Final Major Project Exhibition Contextual Studies There will be a focus on portfolio development and live project briefs, that mirror industry based scenarios and group work. Applicants should hold a Level 3 qualification in a relevant subject equivalent to 200 UCAS points (e.g. BTEC Extended Diploma MMP Profile) and Level 2 qualifications in English and Maths. Foundation Degrees This suite of foundation degrees in business are designed to develop the learners knowledge and understanding of core business practices central to the operation of all businesses, as well as specialist knowledge and understanding related to their chosen specialist area. Modes: Duration: FutureSkills Full-time and part-time 2 years (Full-time) 3 years (Part-time) The foundation degree aims to build awareness of business practices linked to your chosen specialism. Learners will study core aspects of business related to your chosen pathway as well as distinct specialist modules. They will also apply their knowledge and understanding to practical projects and the work environment as part of the work based placement module. The course can be studied in a full or part-time mode. Learners can apply to join the final year of related degree programme on completetion of the foundaton degree if they would like to futher their studies. Grade C or above at GCSE (or Level 2 equivalent) in both Maths and English are required. Equivalent professional or academic qualifications (such as NVQ 3 in Business or a related sector) will also be considered. Applications from those holding non-tariff point qualifications in relevant subject areas (such as work based NVQ3s) are welcome. 10 10 Business & Management, Financial Management, Human Resources Management, Marketing Degrees This suite of degrees are designed to develop the learners knowledge and understanding of core business practices central to the operation of all businesses as well as specialist knowledge and understanding related to their chosen specialist area: Business & Management, Financial Management, Human Resource Management or Marketing. FutureSkills Mode: Full-time Duration: 1 year at the College 2 years at the University of Salford The courses aims to build awareness of business practices linked to the learners chosen specialism. Learners will study core aspects of business related to their chosen pathway as well as distinct specialist modules. They will apply their knowledge and understanding to practical projects and through extended research in their final year of study. The first year of the programme is delivered at FutureSkills, the final two years are delivered by our partner University. Core modules for all programmes will include: Business Statistics Principles of Accounting Principles of Human Resource Management Law in a Business Context Global Organisations Professional Development Assessment methods will vary by pathway but will include written coursework, presentations, practical assessment, observations of work based learning and examinations. 11 11 Games Design Foundation Degree The programme offers the opportunity to develop the intellectual, creative and technical skills required to be a successful contemporary practitioner in games design and development. Modes: Duration: FutureSkills Full-time and part-time 2 years (Full-time) 3 years (Part-time) The qualification is aimed at those who wish to pursue freelance work or employment in a range of careers in the games design industry. Foundation degrees are a good stepping stone for learners who wish to pursue BA (Hons) Degree qualifications. On completion of the foundation degree learners can apply for direct entry into year 3 (or if studied part-time, Level 6) of a computing and games design (or related) degree or a BA top up programme. Modules include: Design Fundamentals Visual Arts for Games Design Creative Media Analysis Digital Graphics and 2D Animation Programming for Games Design Sound, Music and Entertainment Technologies for Games Design Games Design Planning Production Management for Games Design Games Design Prototyping Digital Narrative Technologies Engine Programming for Games Design (Option); or Digital Character Art and Environments (Option) Learners will be assessed on a continuous basis throughout the year. Assessment will include written coursework and practical work. Applicants should hold a Level 3 qualification in a relevant subject equivalent to 200 UCAS points (e.g. BTEC Extended Diploma MMP). Applicants must also hold Level 2 qualifications in English and Maths. Mature applicants (over the ages of 21) who do not met these prerequisites but can demonstrate other experience relevant to the programme of study will be considered on an individual basis. 12 12 Computing and Systems Development HNC The HNC covers the key knowledge, understanding and practical skills required in the ICT sector. Modes: Duration: FutureSkills Full-time and part-time 1 year (Full-time) 2 year (Part-time) The qualification will focus on the areas of web development and programming, providing the skills needed to design and create solutions for existing and developing businesses either through the use of web authoring and scripting software or the latest programming languages. Skills in project planning and management will be developed to compliment the practical and technical skills developed throughout the course. Applicants should hold a Level 3 qualification in a relevant subject equivalent to 200 UCAS points (e.g. BTEC Extended Diploma MMP Profile) and Level 2 qualifications in English and Maths. 13 13 Construction HNC The Higher National Certificate (HNC) is a recognised qualification in the construction industry. The HNC will allow progression on to further higher education programmes or into employment. The course is two years and entails internal and external adjudication of coursework produced throughout the course. This two year course is offered on a Thursday daytime or a Tuesday evening. Mode: Duration: City Skills Sixth Form Centre Part-time 2 years Learners will be assessed throughout the course. Assessment methods include essays, reports, group presentations and project work. HOW TO APPLY Applicants should apply directly to the College by completing the HE Application Form. There are a range of modular units which include: Health, Safety and Welfare Science and Materials Design Principles and Application Applied Maths Building Technology Construction Economics Site Surveying Group Project The HNC is open to anyone over 18 years. Entry requirements are two A-Levels or a National Certificate/ Diploma in Construction. Maths and English at GCSE grades A to C (or equivalent) are recommended. Several years continuous employment in a construction-related industry can also provide sufficient entry requirements. 14 14 Construction and the Built Environment Higher Apprenticeship The Higher Apprenticeship is designed to develop managers in the construction sector and is an ideal way to balance work with continuous professional development for those who are already working in the sector. Learners will study the HND in Construction and the Built Environment alongside studying for an NVQ Level 5 Diploma in Construction Management. Mode: Duration: City Skills Sixth Form Centre Part-time 3 years There are a range of units which include: HND units: Health, Safety and Welfare Design Principles and Application Science and Materials Applied Mathematics Environmental Impact of Construction Management Principles and Application Group Projects in the Construction Industry Site Surveying Procedures Economics for Construction Management for Construction NVQ units: Maintaining Health, Safety and Welfare Systems Developing Working Relationships Ensure Compliance with Legal, Regulatory, Ethical and Social Requirements Manage the Environmental Impact of Work Activities Monitoring Environmental Factors and Sustainability A range of assessment methods are utilised including written coursework, group projects and presentations. The NVQ element will largely be assessed through work based visits and the completion of related course work. Learners should hold a relevant Level 3 qualification in a construction related subject. Maths and English at GCSE grades A to C (or equivalent) are recommended. Several years continuous employment in a construction-related industry can also provide sufficient entry requirements. 15 15 Professional Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) and Certificate in Education The Professional Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) and Certificate in Education is an initial teacher training programme for those who wish to teach learners aged 14 and over in a FE or skills setting. The PGCE is aimed at graduates who wish to teach on courses where a relevant degree is required. The Certificate of Education is aimed at those who wish to teach vocational or skills based qualifications in subject areas where a degree is not typically required. The programme is awarded by the University of Bolton and is accredited by the Education and Training Foundation (ETF). Mode: Duration: Walkden Sixth Form Centre Full-time and part-time 1 year (Full-time) 2 years (Part-time) Programme content is informed by national professional standards for teachers in the FE and Skills sector. Taught sessions will include group workshops, individual and small group practical activities and structured exercises and discussions led by the tutor. In addition learners will be required to undertake 100 hours of teaching practice and will also be expected to engage in independent research outside of class time. Modules include: Preparation for Education and Training Integrating English and Maths in Teaching and Learning Promoting Positive Behaviour Teaching, Learning and Assessing Professionalism and Quality in the Curriculum Professional Research Project Professional Practice Portfolio Learners will complete a variety of written tasks such as reports, assignments and portfolio submissions. They will also give individual and group presentations. Professional practice is assessed partly through teaching observations (including 4 graded observations). PGCE: Applicants must have a Bachelor Degree or equivalent in a relevant subject (linked to intended teaching practice) and relevant work experience if teaching vocational courses. Certificate in Education: Applicants are expected to hold a relevant qualification at Level 3 or above linked to the subject you wish to teach. For some subject areas this means a National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) Level 3 whilst for others it may be an NVQ Level 4 or a Higher National Diploma. Applicants will also be required to obtain a DBS enhanced disclosure clearance; complete, and have approved, a health declaration; provide satisfactory references and demonstrate the potential to successfully complete the programme at interview. 16 16 Early Years Childhood Studies Foundation Degree The Foundation Degree in Early Years and Childhood studies is aimed at those wishing to progress their careers in childcare, teaching and related areas. Learners who successfully complete the foundation degree can move on to a BSc (Hons) top-up programme offered at the University of Bolton s main campus. Mode: Duration: Walkden Sixth Form Centre Part-time 2 years and 1 term The course comprises of twelve modules that include the study of children s development and learning, aspects related to the roles and responsibilities of the childcare worker and becoming a reflective practitioner. Study is closely linked to work practice and therefore you need to be working in a childcare setting. Course content: Study Skills The Developing Child ICT to Support Children s Learning Facilitating Children s Learning Social Policy in Early Years Inclusive Practice Safeguarding Children Developing Self-Reflective Practice Managing Sessions Research Perspectives in Early Years Independent Study Assessment methods will include producing essays, critical reports, group and individual presentations. Learners will also be observed in workbased settings and will be required to produce reflections on their work based practice. Applicants should hold a Level 3 qualification in a relevant subject equivalent to 240 UCAS points (e.g. BTEC Extended Diploma Merit Profile) and Level 2 qualifications in English and Maths. Mature applicants who do not hold a Level 3 qualification, but have relevant experience in the childcare sector, will be considered on an individual basis. All applicants must be employed/ secure employment relevant to the sector (paid or voluntary) for a minimum of two days a week. All learners must be interviewed by the course tutor before enrolment. 17 17 Health and Social Care HNC The HNC in Health and Social Care is a vocational programme that references professional body requirements and national occupational standards. Mode: Duration: Walkden Sixth Form Centre Full-time and part-time 1 year This qualification gives a firm grounding in the key concepts and practical skills required in the health and care sector. It is suitable for those seeking to enhance their employment prospects in the sector or as a stepping stone to further higher level study. Learners will study the following core units: Communicating in Health and Social Care Organisations Principles of Health and Social Care Practice Health and Safety in the Workplace Personal and Professional Development Working in Partnership Possible optional units include: Safeguarding Psychology Empowering Users of Health and Social Care Services Applicants should hold a Level 3 qualification in a relevant subject equivalent to 200 UCAS points (e.g. BTEC Extended Diploma MMP Profile) and Level 2 qualifications in English and Maths. Applicants will need to arrange 200 hours paid or voluntary experience in a Health and Social Care setting. Mature applicants (over the ages of 21) will be considered on an individual basis. 18 18 Creative Music Foundation Degree The foundation degree is aimed at advanced learners who strive to be multi-skilled professionals or entrepreneurs within the music industry. Based at MediaCityUK, learners will study at our new FutureSkills centre; a creative hub for music and media learners containing professional recording, editing and rehearsal facilities. Also based within the centre is our Roland Music Academy, which will provide access to some of the leading products and artists within the music industry. Modes: Duration: FutureSkills Full-time and part-time 2 years (Full-time) 3 years (Part-time) The programme focuses on how to create, perform and produce music products, with a strong emphasis on developing a range of commercial skills needed to work with new technology and the development of the digital market place. Modules include: Language of Music Technology and Music Creation Live Music Performance and Engineering Recording and Production Sound for the Moving Image Entrepreneurship, Marketing and Artistic Promotion Work Based Placement Commercial Music in Context Managing a Music Based Product Professional Product Realisation and Showcase Applicants should hold a Level 3 qualification in a relevant subject equivalent to 200 UCAS points (e.g. BTEC Extended Diploma MMP). Applicants must also hold Level 2 qualifications in English and Maths. Mature applicants who do not met these prerequisites but can demonstrate other experience relevant to the programme of study will be considered on an individual basis. All applicants are expected to have some knowledge of acoustics and the principles that govern the creative use of music technology and will be auditioned/tested in these areas as part of the application process as appropriate. 19 19 Media Make-up for Fashion Foundation Degree This exciting new foundation degree is designed to help learners access exciting employment opportunities in make-up artistry. The two year course is awarded by University of Salford and taught by a team with extensive experience within the sector. The course is delivered at our FutureSkills centre at MediaCityUK. This facility is equipped with a brand new TV studio, edit suites and a radio station. Modes: Duration: FutureSkills Full-time and part-time 2 years (Full-time) 3 years (Part-time) The qualification will give learners a firm grounding in identifying employment opportunities in creative media, research for media production, industry regulation and key techniques in film/tv and radio production. Learners will develop a wide range of industry relevant skills which will help to ensure that they are multiskilled and well placed to pursue employment opportunities. Work-based placements will be a key aspect of the programme and learners will be supported to find good quality placements within the industry as part of the course, developing their CVs and industry contacts at all possible opportunities. 21 21 Musical Theatre Foundation Degree The Foundation Degree in Musical Theatre is aimed at those who wish to pursue career opportunities in Musical Theatre and related areas of the Arts. Learners will develop performance techniques in contemporary theatre, voice, jazz, tap and ballet and acting through song. Modes: Duration: FutureSkills Full-time 2 years The history of Musical Theatre and the context of contemporary Musical Theatre will be explored in years one and two. These modules will be linked to practical work, such as taking part in productions from a set era. The qualification will also include dance, physical theatre, vocal (acting and singing) workshops, plus one to one sessions. There will be an emphasis on key performance skills to help prepare learners for the audition process, such as developing their singing repertory.
