Welcome to UNISON Welcome to UNISON Thank you for joining UNISON, the UK s leading trade union. Every one of our 1.3 million members has their own reason for joining us. But every single one receives all the benefits, help and support we can offer. Your union is here for you, whether it s a problem at work, help with family problems, legal advice or careers and learning. This guide outlines the range of services and benefits we offer and contains information about how to access them. Keep it in a safe place as you may need the information here in the future. I am proud of UNISON and of the great work our members do, whether they work in the public sector or for private companies providing public services. Our members protect, enhance, enrich and save lives. As a member of UNISON you have the strength, knowledge and commitment of your UNISON colleagues around you. We provide advice, support and assistance in the workplace. Our local teams of advisors, legal experts and experienced negotiators will provide you with help at work when you need it most. But our support doesn t end when you leave work. UNISON is there for you and your family outside the workplace. As well as providing essential cover for your everyday life, we speak out for public services and the people who provide them. We speak to politicians and employers about the best way to protect the most vulnerable in our society, and campaign for change on behalf of our members and their families. This booklet is packed with useful information that will help you get the most out of your membership, information and help is also available to members on our website at unison.org.uk. UNISON here to help. Best wishes Dave Prentis, general secretary Marcus Rose 3

Chris Taylor Help at work Representation if you need it Now that you ve joined UNISON you will be able to access the essential cover we offer whenever you need it provided. You never know when you are going to encounter a problem at work, what you do know is that you don t have to face it alone. You have the support of UNISON to help. If you are having problems, the first place you should go is to your local steward. You may have met them already as they are visible in the workplace and details of how to contact UNISON can also be found on posters in staff rooms at work. UNISON stewards are trained to be able to deal with most of the problems that arise at work. They will give you advice, help you write letters, represent you if you take a grievance, or if you are being disciplined and they, or one of their colleagues, will come along and represent you at meetings with your manager. When you first contact them they will sit down with you and ask you questions about your problem and then discuss possible solutions with you. Most problems can be dealt with by your steward, but sometimes, when appropriate, they will need to refer your case to UNISON officials in the regional office, to our in-house legal team or the union s specialist solicitors to make sure you get the most appropriate help and advice. 6
Help at work Other help UNISON has a range of workplace reps, all specialising in different areas. So, if you are concerned about a health and safety issue in your place of work then the best person to speak to will be the UNISON safety rep. They have had training and are legally entitled to carry out workplace inspections, so make sure they are aware of your concerns and they will raise them with your employers. Discrimination can be a real issue in some workplaces and can result in bullying, stress and other unfair decisions being made. UNISON has equality reps whose job it is to deal with these issues and help members who are facing discrimination. Our specialist reps and stewards work closely together to make sure that there is always someone around to help if you have a problem at work. You can also contact your branch as there are other branch officers, for example, branch welfare officers, who are there to help you. Legal support if you need it UNISON provides a very wide range of legal help to union members in the UK. We offer advice and assistance with work issues of course, but we can sometimes also offer legal help for you and your family outside the workplace. Your rights at work Workers in the UK enjoy a range of legal rights at work, including many that have been negotiated by trade unions on behalf of their members. What follows is a brief summary of some of your key rights at work hopefully these pointers will help you spot any potential problems early so that you can get help from UNISON. 7
8 You have rights to: a written statement from your employer setting out your terms and conditions an itemised payslip paid annual leave sick pay work in a safe working environment maternity leave, reasonable parental leave pay and time off for ante natal care etc if you are a pregnant woman time off to care for dependents equal pay for men and women minimum periods of notice before an employer can terminate your employment (unless you are dismissed for gross misconduct) a redundancy payment to be paid at least the national minimum wage to be accompanied by a trade union official or a co-worker to grievance or disciplinary hearings at work. You have rights not to: have your wages stopped or part of your wages deducted while you are employed have your contract changed by your employer without your agreement (even if your employer sells his or her business to a new employer) work more than 48 hours a week be discriminated against on the grounds of race, sex, disability, sexual orientation, religious belief, age, trade union activities, because you work part time or are on a fixed term contract be unfairly dismissed. Some of these rights are automatic, others will depend on how long you have worked for your employer. You can get more detailed information from our website at unison.org.uk.
Help at work Access to legal services If you believe that your employer is not acting lawfully then you need to contact your UNISON branch. When you joined UNISON you were allocated a branch and you will find branch contact details in the letter that came with your membership card. UNISON boasts great local union reps, branches and officers in the UK. They will advise and support you if you are having problems at work. Where necessary they will refer your case to the regional UNISON office or to our specialist in house lawyers or team of trade union solicitors for advice. It is important that you contact the union as soon as possible as legal rights often have time limits. For example, a claim for unfair dismissal must be lodged within three months (less one day) of the date of dismissal. Eligibility In order to qualify for legal assistance from the union you need to have been a member for at least four weeks before you knew you needed legal help and sought that help from UNISON. You must also be up to date with your union subscriptions. Accidents/injuries at work As a UNISON member you are entitled to free legal advice and assistance following an accident or injury at work. This covers any work-related accident or injury including assaults, industrial diseases, accidents at work and accidents on the way to or from work or on union business. Bullying and stress at work can make your life very difficult, each year too many people die as a result of unsafe workplaces or work practices, and millions of working days are lost through sickness and ill-health. UNISON takes your health and safety seriously and has a comprehensive network of workplace based safety representatives. Their job is to be the union s eyes and ears in the workplace. They carry out workplace inspections, can investigate complaints from members about specific issues at work and can advise you if you are suffering from stress or are being bullied at work. UNISON has a very good track record on health and safety issues and to date has won more than 350 million in compensation for members and their families who have been injured. We work closely with employers to

About UNISON moved into new areas such as water and telecommunications. Health UNISON is the major union in health and represents nearly half a million health workers. Our members are divided into four occupational groups: ambulance services, nursing and midwifery, operational services including administrative, clerical, ancillary and maintenance staff and science, technical and therapy. Our members work in hospitals, community and primary care, for GPs, in ambulance and patient transport services, in laboratories, for commissioners, for charities providing healthcare and for private companies delivering health services. Health students are also UNISON members. As the largest union in health UNISON plays a key role in UK-wide negotiating structures and in partnership bodies with other unions and employers in all four countries. Local government UNISON represents more than half of the people employed in local government, from cleaners to senior managers. Nearly three quarters of a million UNISON members work for local councils and local authority schools. 77% of them are women. Our members work in libraries, youth services, housing offices, trading standards departments, on the streets as refuse collectors and school crossing patrol staff and in our parks and town halls. They are social workers and care workers and many do vital administrative work supporting front-line workers. The local government service group also covers staff working at the Care Quality Commission and the Food Standards Agency, inspecting health and care services and carrying out meat inspections. Police and justice UNISON is one of the largest trade unions in police and justice with over 40,000 members working in police, probation and the Children 21
and Family Court Advisory and Support Service (CAFCASS). Our members are police community support officers, scenes of crime officers, 999 call takers, fingerprint experts, custody officers, case preparation clerks, financial investigators, victim liaison officers, probation services officers, approved premises managers and in a range of other roles. UNISON negotiates pay and conditions for police, probation and CAFCASS staff in England, Scotland and Wales. Water, environment and transport UNISON supports members working in water companies, the Environment Agency, passenger transport executives, bus companies, British Waterways, and regional and local airports. Around half of these members work in frontline customer service jobs and the remainder in infrastructure and maintenance roles. UNISON is the leading union in the utilities and works closely with groups such as Transport 2000 on improving the UK s transport infrastructure. Service group executives UNISON has seven service group executives: community, energy, health, higher education, local government, police and justice and water, environment and transport. The service group executives are made up of elected members and help decide our priorities and policies as well as working with UNISON staff to support members. 22
About UNISON Your branch and region Branches Every member of UNISON belongs to a local branch which is made up of people working for the same employer. The branch holds meetings so that members can get together and discuss important issues affecting your workplace. Branch officers organise the meetings and run the branch. They are elected by branch members to take on different roles within the branch and to help organise the union s work on your behalf. Among the branch positions are branch secretary, chair, treasurer, equality officer, health and safety officer and education officer. Many branches have a welfare officer as well. Some of our larger branches employ staff to help out with the admin of the branch, and have branch offices in the workplace. Branches hold regular meetings, including an annual general meeting when branch officers are elected. Workplace stewards and other reps are the core of the branch. Without them there would be no union to support you at work. Any branch member can go to branch meetings. It is a good way to find out what is going on and to meet colleagues who have the same concerns and issues that you do. Your branch may also have its own website or produce a branch newsletter to help keep you up to date with what the union is doing in your workplace. Regions Each UNISON branch belongs to a region. There are 12 UNISON regions across the UK, each with its own head office and a regional council made up of delegates from all branches in that region. The regions are: Eastern East Midlands 23
Greater London North West Northern Northern Ireland Scotland South East South West Cymru/Wales West Midlands Yorkshire and Humberside The telephone number for each region is National UNISON members elect national representatives to work on their behalf either as part of a service group executive, or the National Executive Council (NEC). The NEC is made up of elected members from all regions and all areas of work (service groups). The NEC is the governing body of the union and sets the priorities for negotiating and the union s political work. At least two thirds of the seats are held by women and 13 are reserved for low paid women. UNISON staff UNISON employs over 1,200 staff across the UK. Many work in regional offices to support branches and workplace reps. Some larger branches employ their own staff. Other staff work in the union s head office providing specialist help and support to regions and branches. UNISON s elected general secretary works full time for the union as do our assistant general secretaries. We also have a president and two vicepresidents who are elected members of the NEC. 24
Get involved Get involved Campaigning In addition to providing you with essential cover when you need it, UNISON works nationally to protect its members by campaigning. We use our size and industrial strength to campaign on those issues that are important to our members. We also campaign with members of the public, other unions, service users locally and nationally to protect the interests of our members and to defend the services they provide. From big national campaigns to local branch campaigns, we are speaking up for public services and the people who provide them. Our members are working with others to protect A&E services in local hospitals, to defend trading standards, to stop job losses in schools and for better national standards in private companies providing public services. If there is a local issue that will affect lots of people in a workplace then chances are that the branch will be campaigning around that issue. It could be charging staff to park their cars at work, the closure of a local library, the cutting of staff in 999 call centres, or plans to change the hours of work for staff. At a national level we campaign to protect our members jobs and for decent pay and terms and conditions and to make politicians and other decision makers understand the important of public services to local communities and the vital work that our members do. There are lots of ways to get involved in UNISON s campaigns. You could help your branch hand out leaflets, write letters to local papers and politicians (there is always plenty of information available to help you do this), come on a march or rally or attend a meeting. You can sign petitions and ask family, friends and colleagues to sign them too, or you can speak to your colleagues about the union s local campaign and ask them to get involved. 25
In the same way you can get involved in national campaigns by sending s to politicians, signing online petitions, putting up posters and handing out leaflets or telling your story about how changes and cuts will affect you and your family and the services you provide. It doesn t matter what you do, if all our members do one small, quick thing, that s 1.3 million things that get done. That makes it hard for employers and politicians to ignore us. Get active in UNISON We hope that now you ve joined UNISON you might want to consider becoming involved and getting active. UNISON reps are the lifeblood of the union. Without them there would be no help and representation available to you in the workplace. We have over 45,000 reps across the UK but there is always room for more. You don t have to commit a lot of time, or be an expert to get more involved, a little time and a lot of enthusiasm are all that s needed give it a try, you ll be amazed how much you get out of it. Branch As a UNISON member you are always part of your local branch. Why not get active by going along to a branch meeting to meet other UNISON members and find out what the branch is doing. You ll be made very welcome and it s a great chance to find out more about what the union is doing for you. If you enjoy branch meetings, why not offer to lend a hand from time to time. What you do depends on how much time you have. You might be able to help get the room ready for a meeting, hand out information or put up posters advertising branch meetings. If you are looking for a bigger role, you could always stand for election to become 26
Get involved a branch official. You ll find there is lots of information and support from branch members and UNISON will provide you with any training you need. At work You could think about helping out in your workplace. There are several ways to do this. If you have a bit of time and enjoy getting about and talking to people, why not become a workplace contact. This means you can help out with things like making sure that new UNISON posters and information get put up on union noticeboards and that out of date material is removed. You might also be happy for other members to come and talk to you about when meetings are, what the union is doing and finding out what is bothering your colleagues at work. You would then feed this information back to the stewards and other workplace reps. If you are really interested in the work of the union and want to get more involved you could think about trying to get elected as a steward. If successful you will help organise, recruit and represent members in your workplace. It s a vital job and UNISON provides excellent training and support for our stewards because we know that the steward is the face of the union in the workplace. The health and safety rep is another key member of the UNISON team at work. As a safety rep it would be your job to ensure that the workplace is safe and does not cause injury or ill-health. You will be investigating complaints, carrying out workplace inspections and talking to employers about all aspects of health and safety. But don t worry, we wouldn t expect you to do any of this without proper training and access to help and advice. If you are interested in learning and helping people to develop their skills, confidence and career choices then the role of union learning rep or lifelong learning adviser would be an ideal role for you. You would 27
be encouraging and supporting potential learners and really helping other UNISON members to change their lives. If you want to make sure that people are treated fairly at work and do not suffer from discrimination on the basis of sex, race, sexual orientation, disability, age, religious beliefs or being part time, then you might want to think about becoming a UNISON equality rep. Your role will include promoting equality in the workplace. UNISON wants all branches to have a young members rep to ensure that the issues of concern to young workers (under the age of 27) and student members of UNISON are heard and acted on. If you want to find out more about being a young members rep contact your branch. So, as you can see, there are lots of ways to get involved go ahead and try it and you ll find you get a lot more out of your membership of UNISON. Get organised UNISON members have set up groups for people who have interests in common. These groups are called self-organised groups and cover women, Black members, disabled members and lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender members. There is also a retired members group and a young members group, but these work in a slightly different way to the other selforganised groups. If you would like to find out more about selforganised groups in your area, your branch will be able to give you contact details. There are women s groups at every level in UNISON, local, regional and national. This is where women get together to discuss the issues that matter to them, issues like low pay, discrimination and harassment. Those issues and others can then be discussed at the annual national women s conference and worked on by the elected members of the women s national committee. 28
Get involved UNISON supports a growing network of active Black members in branches and regions across the union. By coming along to your regional Black members group you can find out more about local and national events. Our national Black members committee works with all parts of the union to improve the working lives of Black members. Disabled members of UNISON are coming together to challenge discrimination and to break down the barriers that prevent them playing a full role and equal role in society, both inside and outside of work. There are regional disabled members groups that hold a range of different meetings and social events, so why not go along and find out more. Your branch can help with details. Our national disabled members committee and our national annual disabled members conference set the priorities for the union s work in this area. LGBT people in UNISON organise locally and nationally to support each other, to identify discrimination, to increase awareness of LGBT rights and to campaign for change. You can find out about local and national events through your regional group, who can also put you in touch with other people who share your concerns. LGBT members meet as a self organised group at national level and there is an annual LGBT conference. Young members UNISON has one of the largest young memberships in a UK trade union and offers lots of opportunities for our young members (under the age of 27) to get involved in the union. The national young members forum gives young members a voice at the top level of the union, and there are regional young members forums in every region. We encourage young members to come along to our national young members forum which is held every year and offers you a series of skills based workshops and debates to help you get more active in the union. Chris Taylor 29
Retired members When you retire, you don t have to give up your membership of UNISON. We know that your experience and skills can go on making a real difference to our union, which is why we have a retired members section which has its own annual conference and local and regional groups. Each UNISON branch has a retired members officer, and we are always looking for retired members who can offer their time and experience to help our branches and members. UNISON conferences National delegate conference It is members who determine the issues and policies that UNISON takes forward and this is done through the national delegate conference. UNISON s conference brings together over 2,000 members from all regions and service groups for four days every summer. It is where the decisions are made about the issues that the union will be prioritising over the coming year. Every UNISON branch elects delegates to attend and vote on behalf of their local branch members and we are careful to ensure that women, Black, LGBT, disabled, retired and young members are represented fairly. Ask your branch more about conference and remember to keep up to date with what is happening you can check the website and UNISON publications for reports on the debates and speeches. National service group conferences Service groups bring together members across the country doing similar jobs or working for the same kind of employer. 30
Get involved Each service group holds a conference each year, lasting between one and three days, where members come together to debate issues that are relevant to them. Delegates are elected by their branches to attend service group conferences. To find out more speak to your branch. Self-organised group conferences Every self-organised group holds a conference once a year, often lasting three days over a weekend, where members with similar interests can come together to debate the issues that affect them. To find out more contact your branch. Retired members and young members also hold annual events your branch will be able to give you details. 31
