1 2010 Business Cntinuity Study: Missuri 2010 AT&T Business Cntinuity Study CENTRAL REGION (Missuri) Results Key Findings IT Plans fr 2010 IT budgets fr 2010 are abut the same r higher than thse f the previus tw years. Investment in new technlgies will cntinue in Seven ut f 10 (69%) executives indicate that their cmpanies are investing in new technlgies in Business Cntinuity Plans The vast majrity (83%) f executives in the Central regin indicate their cmpanies have a business cntinuity plan. Six ut f ten (60%) indicate their cmpanies implement specific prtective actins when the federal r state gvernment issues an alert fr an impending disaster. Half (53%) f these cmpanies have had their business cntinuity plans fully tested in the past 12 mnths AT&T Intellectual Prperty. All rights reserved. Tw-thirds (63%) cnsider the use f managed r utsurced capabilities as part f their business cntinuity plan. Similarly, 64% include their wireless netwrk capabilities as part f their business cntinuity plan. Security Threats A majrity (57%) f these cmpanies prvide emplyees with access t scial netwrking tls. Three ut f fur (76%) executives are cncerned abut the increasing use f scial netwrking capabilities and its impact n security threats. A similar prprtin (74%) is cncerned abut the increasing use f mbile netwrks and devices and their impact n security threats. Overall, the threat that pses the biggest risk t security is hacking (27%). Cmmunicating During Natural Disasters Mst (73%) Central regin executives indicate their cmpanies have priritized and set target recvery times fr each f their key business prcesses. The vast majrity (79%) indicates that they have special arrangements fr cmmunicating with key executives in the event f a disaster. Mre than eight ut f ten (85%) have r text messaging capabilities t reach emplyees utside f wrk. Tw-thirds (68%) have systems in place that enable mst emplyees t wrk frm hme r remte lcatins; almst half (48%) have
3 autmated calling systems t reach emplyees by telephne r cell phne utside f wrk. Detailed Findings IT Plans fr 2010 IT budgets fr 2010 are abut the same r higher than thse f the previus tw years. Seven ut f ten (72%) executives indicate that their IT budgets fr 2010 are the same r higher than the previus tw years; 34% indicate the budgets are abut the same, and 38% indicate the budgets are higher. One-furth (24%) indicates their IT budget fr 2010 is lwer than in the previus tw years. Investment in new technlgies will cntinue in Seven ut f 10 (69%) executives indicate that their cmpanies are investing in new technlgies in Executives mst frequently mentin that they will be investing in mbile applicatins (30%), clud cmputing (30%), virtualizatin (26%), hsted services (18%), unified cmmunicatins (17%), digital media slutins (17%) and telepresence (12%). Business Cntinuity Plans Business cntinuity planning is seen as a pririty by threefurths (74%) f IT executives in the Central regin. Almst half (45%) indicate it has always been a pririty fr their business, and three ut f 10 (29%) indicate it has becme a pririty in recent years due t natural disasters, security and terrrist threats. One-furth (25%) f the executives indicate business cntinuity is nt a pririty. The vast majrity (83%) f these executives indicate their cmpanies have a business cntinuity plan. Fllwing are specific details abut these plans. Executives mst frequently indicate that the business unit in charge f managing
4 the business cntinuity plan is the IT Department (30%), fllwed by the CEO/CFO (28%) and the CIO/CTO (16%). Cncerning methds fr cmmunicating the specifics f the business cntinuity plan t emplyees, ne-third (34%) indicates the infrmatin is cascaded frm senir leadership, and anther ne-third (37%) indicates it is cmmunicated thrugh brad, generic cmmunicatins t all emplyees. Six ut f ten (60%) indicate their cmpanies implement specific prtective actins when the federal r state gvernment issues an alert fr an impending disaster. A majrity (53%) f these cmpanies have had their business cntinuity plans fully tested in the past 12 mnths. Only 11% indicate that their plans have never been tested. One-fifth (22%) indicates that testing includes all lcatins wrldwide. One-third (34%) f these cmpanies require their suppliers and ther vendrs t have a business cntinuity plan in place in rder t d business with them. Tw-thirds (63%) cnsider the use f managed r utsurced capabilities as part f their business cntinuity plan. A similar prprtin (64%) includes their wireless netwrk capabilities as part f their business cntinuity plan. Fur ut f ten (39%) indicate that at least 50% f their cmpany s emplyees use mbile devices. One-third (33%) indicates that emplyee use f mbile devices plays a majr rle in the business cntinuity plan; 45% indicate mbile devices play a minr rle. Mre than half (53%) indicate that their cmpanies have virtualized the cmputing infrastructure. Almst half (46%) have implemented a business cntinuity plan fr that virtualized infrastructure.
5 One-third (34%) indicates that satellite cmmunicatins are part f their cmpany s cmmunicatins netwrk. Satellite cmmunicatins are used fr cmmunicatins in general (10%), disaster cmmunicatins (6%) and data transmissin (5%). Three ut f 10 (29%) executives indicate that their cmpany has invked its business cntinuity plan. Reasns fr invking the plan mst frequently invlve: Extreme weather (18%) Pwer utages at facilities (16%) IT failures (13%) The need fr a plan f actin and backup systems are imprtant lessns learned. Fur ut f ten (41%) cmpanies have experienced a natural r man-made disaster that affected IT peratins. Executives indicate that the biggest lessn learned frm this experience was the need t plan ahead and have a plan f actin (10%). Security Threats A majrity (57%) f these cmpanies prvide emplyees with access t scial netwrking tls. One-fifth (21%) indicates that scial netwrking is generally accepted and widely used, while three ut f 10 (30%) indicate it is generally accepted but used by nly a few. Three ut f fur (76%) executives are cncerned abut the increasing use f scial netwrking capabilities and its impact n security threats. Half (54%) are smewhat cncerned, and ne-fifth (22%) is very cncerned. A similar prprtin (74%) is cncerned abut the increasing use f mbile netwrks and devices and their impact n security threats. Half (50%) are smewhat cncerned, and ne-furth (24%) is very cncerned.
6 Overall, the threat that pses the biggest risk t security is hacking (27%). Other perceived threats include an internal accident (13%) and internal sabtage (10%). While executives are cncerned abut hw scial netwrking capabilities and the use f mbile netwrks and devices may impact security, nly 7% view scial netwrking sites and 2% view mbile netwrks as the biggest security risks. Cmmunicating During Natural Disasters Seven ut f ten (73%) executives indicate their cmpanies have priritized and set target recvery times fr each f their key business prcesses. 7 Methdlgy The results are based n an nline survey f 105 Infrmatin Technlgy (IT) executives in the Central regin f the Unites States, primarily representing cmpanies in the state f Missuri (95%). The study was cnducted by e-rewards Market Research with cmpanies having ttal revenues f at least $10 millin (except fr state/lcal gvernment participants). Surveys in the Central regin were btained between March 5 and March 12, e-rewards Market Research is ne f the tp nline market research sample prviders in the U.S. Thrugh their B-t-B business panel, they have the ability t quickly target high- level decisin makers and executives by industry, cmpany size, functinal rle and purchasing rle (amng ther attributes). Using a by-invitatin nly apprach, they have recruited ver tw millin business panelists wh pt-in t survey requests. Of the 105 participating executives: One hundred percent (100%) have primary respnsibility fr business cntinuity planning Fifty percent (50%) represent cmpanies with revenues in excess f $25 millin; 7% represent state/lcal gvernments Thirty-nine percent (39%) are VPs/Managers/Directrs f IT r IS; 28% are the CIO, CTO, CFO, CEO r COO Frty-six percent (46%) represent cmpanies with lcatins utside f the United States Executives represent 14 majr industry areas (besides state/lcal gvernment)
