1 YEAR ONE DEGREE STRUCTURES ALL STUDENTS TAKE 120 CREDITS IN THE FIRST YEAR These pages provide additional information about the first year of studying a degree in the Schools listed below. Cardiff Business School English, Communication and Philosophy History, Archaeology and Religion Journalism, Media and Cultural Studies Modern Languages Music Politics and International Relations (part of the School of Law, Politics and IR) Welsh In all cases, students should refer to the specific Course Finder information for the degree programme that they are interested in studying or contact the Humanities Office at: EdwardsL@cardiff.ac.uk or on All students will take modules to the value of 120 credits in Year One. This applies to both single and joint honours students. The way in which a student achieves these credits can vary depending on the exact degree programme. In most cases, modules are worth 20 credits. Cardiff Business School (CARBS) For all single honours students in the Business School, it is required that 120 credits are studied within your chosen subject area. Please check Course Finder for further information relating to your degree programme. For all BA joint honours degrees, it is required that a minimum of 40 credits is studied within the Business School, a further 40 credits are required to be studied in the partner school; the remaining 40 credits are then selected from additional modules on offer in either school or in an associate school. For students studying Politics and Economics or Business Studies and Japanese, it is required that 60 credits are selected from each subject area. English, Communication and Philosophy (ENCAP) For students studying a single honours degree programme in English Literature or English Language, it is required that a minimum of 80 credits is studied within the school. 2 be selected from additional modules within the school if the student wishes to pursue their entire degree within English, Communication and Philosophy, or can be selected from modules on offer by associate schools. For students pursuing the single honours degree in English Language and Literature, it is required that a minimum of 40 credits are studied in each subject. The remaining 40 credits can be selected from additional modules within the school if the student wishes to pursue their entire degree within English, Communication and Philosophy, or can be selected from modules on offer by associate schools. For students studying a degree programme in Philosophy, it is required that a minimum of 60 credits is studied within the school. As above, the remaining 60 can be selected from additional modules within the school or from modules on offer by associate schools. For all students pursuing a joint honours degree, it is required that a minimum of 40 credits is studied within the School of English, Communication and Philosophy. A minimum of 40 credits will be required from the partner school, and then any remaining credits selected from additional modules from within either school or from modules available within associate schools. History, Archaeology and Religion (SHARE) For students studying a single honours degree programme in History or Archaeology, it is required that a minimum of 80 credits is studied within that subject. The remaining 40 credits can be selected from additional modules within the school if the student wishes to pursue their entire degree within History, Archaeology and Religion, or can be selected from modules on offer by associate schools. For students studying a single honours degree programme in Ancient History or Religious Studies, it is required that a minimum of 40 credits is taken within that subject. The remaining 80 credits can be selected from additional modules within the school or from modules on offer by associate schools. For all students pursuing a joint honours degree, it is required that a minimum of 40 credits is studied within the School of History, Archaeology and Religion. A minimum of 40 credits will be required from the partner school with any remaining credits selected from additional modules within either school or from modules available within associate schools. The above structure, however, does not apply to BA Modern History and Politics nor BScEcon History and Sociology, for which students will be required to study 60 credits from each subject area. 3 Journalism, Media and Cultural Studies (JOMEC) For students studying a single honours degree programme in Media, Journalism and Culture, Journalism and Communications or Media and Communications, it is required that a minimum of 80 credits are studied within the school. The remaining 40 credits must be selected from modules available in associate schools. The structure of the joint honours degrees within the School of Journalism, Media and Cultural Studies depends on your exact programme of study; For Journalism, Media and Sociology and for Welsh and Journalism, 60 credits will be studied in each subject area. For Journalism, Media and English Literature, a minimum of 40 credits in each subject area is required; the remaining 40 credits can be selected from either school, or from modules available within associate schools. Modern Languages (MLANG) For students studying a single honours degree programme in a modern language or Translation, it is required that a minimum of 40 credits is studied within that subject area. The remaining 80 credits required as part of Year One can be selected from other modules available in the school or from modules on offer by associate schools. For students studying a degree in Japanese, it is required that a minimum of 60 credits is studied within that subject area. The remaining 60 credits required as part of Year One can be selected from other modules available in the school or from modules on offer by associate schools. The structure of the joint honours degrees within the School of Modern Languages depends on your exact programme of study; For LLB Law with a language, 40 credits will be required within your chosen language with the remaining 80 credits studied within the School of Law and Politics. For any joint honours courses with Japanese, 60 credits will be studied in each subject area. For all other joint honours options, it is required that 40 credits is studied within the School of Modern Languages, with a further 40 credits studied within the partner school. Any remaining credits can be selected from either partner school or from an external associate school. Page 3 of 5

4 Music For students studying a single honours degree programme in BA Music, it is required that a minimum of 80 credits is studied within the school. The remaining 40 credits can be selected from modules available within the school or from modules on offer within associate schools. The structure of the joint honours degrees within the School of Music depend on your exact programme of study; For Music and Maths, it is required that 60 credits are studied from each school For Physics and Music, it is required that 80 credits are studied within Physics, with the remaining 40 credits studied in Music. For all other joint honours options, it is required that 40 credits is studied within the School of Music, with a further 40 credits studied within the partner school. Any remaining credits can be selected from either partner school or from an external associate school. Politics and International Relations (LAWPL) For students studying a single honours degree programme in Politics or International Relations and Politics, it is required that a minimum of 80 credits is studied within the school. The remaining 40 credits can be selected from modules available within the school or from modules on offer within associate schools. The structure of the joint honours degrees within the School of Law and Politics depends on your exact programme of study; For LLB Law with Politics, it is required that 80 credits are studied within Law, with the remaining 40 credits studied within Politics. For Politics and Economics, Modern History and Politics and Politics and Sociology, 60 credits will be studied from each school. For all BA joint honours degree programmes, it is required that 40 credits are studied with Politics with a further 40 credits studied within the partner school. Any remaining credits can be selected from either partner school or from an associate school. Page 4 of 5

5 Welsh (WELSH) Single honours The BA in Welsh is a three-year programme which has two routes, one for students who have studied Welsh as a first language, and one for students who have studied Welsh as a second language. In the first year these cohorts are taught separately. For students following the first language cohort, it is required that a minimum of 60 credits is studied within the school, with the remaining 60 credits either selected from additional modules within the school or from modules offered by associate schools. For students following the second language cohort, it is required that a minimum of 80 credits is studied within the school with the remaining 40 credits either selected from additional modules within the school or from modules offered by associate schools. Joint honours The structure of the joint honours degrees within the School of Welsh depends on your exact programme of study; For Law and Welsh, it is required that a minimum of 80 credits is studied in Law, with the remaining 40 credits studied in Welsh. This degree programmes is only available to first language Welsh students. For Education and Welsh, Sociology and Welsh or Welsh and Journalism, it is required that 60 credits are taken in each school. These degree programmes are only available to first language Welsh students. For all other BA joint honours programmes including Welsh as a second language, it is required that a minimum of 80 credits are studied within Welsh, with the remaining 40 credits studied in the partner school. For all BA joint honours programmes including Welsh as a first language, it is required that a minimum of 60 credits are studied within Welsh and a minimum of 40 credits in the partner school. The remaining 20 credits are usually taken from additional modules within the School of Welsh but in some cases, there may be opportunities to take the remaining credits from the partner school or an associate school.
