1 Health 2 - APNP 115 Access to Practical Nursing Program Course Outline COURSE IMPLEMENTATION DATE: September 2008 OUTLINE EFFECTIVE DATE: September 2009 COURSE OUTLINE REVIEW DATE: August 2014 GENERAL COURSE DESCRIPTION: Society is bombarded with a variety of myths, stereotypes, and prejudices related to aging. To gain a factual picture of aging and the associated nursing practice implications, this course examines the normal aging process. Topics covered include theories of aging, holistic gerontological assessments with associated nursing interventions, and educational concepts regarding prevention and health promotion. To complement the above, students study growth and development, including developmental tasks of each stage of life. Program Information: This course is one of 6 courses offered in the second semester of the Access to Practical Nursing program. Satisfactory completion of each of these courses must be achieved in order to progress to the next level of the program. Delivery: This course is delivered online. LEARNING OUTCOMES: Upon the successful completion of this course, you should be able to: understand concepts of human growth and development. identify fact versus fallacy regarding the aging process and older adulthood. understand physiological and psychological processes of normal aging. understand biological and psychological theories of aging. appreciate lifestyle adjustments in older adulthood. understand the demographics of the age 65+ population (gender, ethnicity, socioeconomics, % of total population), and the present and projected impacts of these statistics upon health care delivery. understand changes and adjustments within the aging family. promote self care through advocacy and/or interventions which support optimal levels of wellness. COURSE TOPICS: Growth & Development Theories of Growth and Development (Maslow, Freud, Erikson, Piaget, Kohlberg and Fowler). Assessing requirements for and promoting health and wellness. 4 Aging - A Normal Process Physiological structural changes within the normal aging process alter the functioning of body systems. This specialty is called Gerontological Nursing. Theories of Aging Understanding and recognizing the aging process. Aging and Wellness Understanding specific requirements to enable and support an optimum level of function in older adulthood. The Aging Family Lifestyle changes that create health issues needing intervention. See instructor s Syllabus for the detailed outline of weekly readings, activities and assignments. 5 EXAM POLICY Students must attend all required scheduled exams that make up a final grade at the appointed time and place. Individual instructors may accommodate for illness or personal crisis. Additional accommodation will not be made unless a written request is sent to and approved by the appropriate Department Head prior to the scheduled exam. Any student who misses a scheduled exam without approval will be given a grade of 0 for the exam.
