5 Pourquoi mesurer? Sustainability measurement is an internal steering tool for: 1. Risk control (accidents, pollution, bad media,..) 2. Efficiency increments, e.g. energy savings 3. Marketing and Unique Selling Proposition (USP) It helps meeting the increasing awareness and expectations of the public (tourists, media, politics, investors,..) for responsible management. Sustainability as part of the business model necessary, helpful, and a chance.

24 Recommandations A best practice sustainability measurement and reporting concept should include a combination of existing tools: A leading multi-criteria label for impact assessment (e.g. Flocon Vert) Extended by the environmental Auditing tool A detailed carbon footprint analysis expressed in t CO2eq/tourist An independent leading process certification (e.g. EMAS) An individual sustainability report according to GRI guidelines A full system boundary of the destination: ski area, hotels, gastronomy, transportation

25 Prochaine étape the Sustainable Mountain Tourism Alliance Build a strong coalition bottom-up (destinations, ski areas, hotels and gastronomy,...) and top-down (public sector, NGOs,...), with the industry, media and science for wider support and outreach of existing tools Analyse, compare and promote labels and tools of good practice Develop a best practice measurement and reporting protocol as a combination of existing tools
