1 Academic Consortium for Complementary and Alternative Health Care Elizabeth Goldblatt, PhD, MPA/HA ACCAHC Chair National Center for Interprofessional Primary Healthcare Institute of Medicine Global Forum on Innovation in Health Professional Education April 2015
2 National Center for Interprofessional Primary Healthcare The Arizona Center for Integrative Medicine at University of Arizona, in collaboration with a network of national organizations including ACCAHC and CAHCIM, recently received a three year grant from HRSA to develop a uniform set of competencies in integrative medicine and health across the primary care professions, as well as a uniform curriculum to speak to those competencies. The new project is called the National Center for Interprofessional Primary Healthcare. Integrative Medicine is defined as the practice of medicine that reaffirms the importance of the relationship between practitioner and patient, focuses on the whole person, is informed by evidence, and makes use of all appropriate therapeutic approaches, healthcare professionals and disciplines to achieve optimal health and healing. 1 Integrative medicine includes both conventional and licensed CAM practitioners.

Develop a 45-hour hour interprofessional IH online curriculum for primary care educational programs Foundations in Integrative Health. Create an accessible and interactive online infrastructure. Develop patient education IH material and facilitate access to IH practitioners.
5 The 10 meta-competencies for primary care providers in Integrative Medicine include: 1. Practice patient-centered and relationship-based care. 2. Obtain a comprehensive health history which includes mind-body-spirit, nutrition, and the use of conventional, complementary and integrative therapies and disciplines. 3. Collaborate with individuals and families to develop a personalized plan of care to promote health and well-being which incorporates integrative approaches including lifestyle counseling and the use of mind-body strategies. 4. Demonstrate skills in utilizing the evidence as it pertains to integrative healthcare. 5. Demonstrate knowledge about the major conventional, complementary and integrative health professions. 6. Facilitate behavior change in individuals, families and communities. 7. Work effectively as a member of an interprofessional team. 8. 8 Integrative Medicine Training Needs of Health Professionals in the ACA Era The ultimate goal of the NCIPH is to create effective interprofessional, collaborative teams that are patient/person centered and will utilize the principles of integrative medicine to work towards eliminating health disparities in primary care and promoting healthy communities. In order to accomplish our goal of building effective and knowledgeable interprofessional integrative team care, and to begin to break down the silos that divide the professions in terms of training and practice standards, the NCIPHC leadership has made a strategic decision to engage as wide a spectrum as possible of the professions involved in primary care in fact even wider than was specified in the HRSA specifications for this project- to create a common set of competencies in integrative healthcare.
