Learning Objectives By viewing this module, students will learn: Definition of a Résumé Purpose of a Résumé How to format their Wisconsin MBA Résumé Résumé tips
What is a Résumé? Marketing Tool about you Allows you to highlight your skills & experience tailored to the prospective job. Screening Device about them Employers use this as a tool sort through prospective employees and trim down pile of applicants.
Types of Résumés Although the primary resume format for students is chronological, specific job openings may call for a more specialized resume. Different types of résumés are important to keep in mind to market yourself correctly to employers. A. Chronological All primary résumés B. Functional Functional resumes highlight a few key areas of experience and list responsibilities and accomplishments for each experience area. These skill clusters should be specific and filled with lots of context, as well as targeted to the jobs you are applying for. C. Combination Hybrid of both chronological and functional Starts with function/skill areas first, then goes in reverse chronological order for professional experience.
Wisconsin MBA Résumé Format Basics All students will write a primary version of your résumé, consistent with the template in the Wisconsin MBA Résumé Guide. This primary version should consist of the following components and be developed in a chronological manner. All primary resume should be limited to one page and use the Times New Roman font.
Résumé Components NAME BLOCK Composed of basic contact information. Includes your full first and last name in CAPS with a larger, bold type. Do not include nicknames or inappropriate addresses. Provide both permanent and temporary addresses if a move or relocation is planned after submission of your resume. Do not use abbreviations. TEST R. STUDENT 1234 Wisconsin Avenue Madison, WI teststudent@wisc.edu
EDUCATION Chronological listing of your educational experience. It is your preference to add GPA, however, be consistent. If you add your GPA under your MBA also add it under your undergraduate degree and include the scale. After initial identification of a school s location, list your specialization focus followed by either key coursework or class projects. Add key accomplishments or memberships, etc. EDUCATION University of Wisconsin-Madison, Wisconsin School of Business, Madison, WI Master of Business Administration Candidate Specialization: Risk Management and Insurance Key Coursework: Marketing, Finance, Accounting, Data-to-Decisions, Leading and Working in Teams GPA: 4.0 University of Iowa, Iowa City, IA Bachelor of Arts Major: Political Science and Statistics GPA: 3.85
EXPERIENCE Listing of present to past employers. Start each bullet with an action verb or resume power word. Think about goals accomplished which conclude in specific results, numbers when appropriate. Adjust the quantity of bullets you include based on relevance to the position you submit your resume for. PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE Sample Insurance Corporation, San Francisco, CA NOTE: dates of experience 02/10 06/13 should have a MM/YY format. Pricing Analyst Created and revised financial projections annually, contributing to a 10% profitability margin in two years. Evaluated product rate positioning relative to financial projections, update pricing strategies, communicate updates and execute short term tactics, meeting or exceeding budget and timeline objectives in 95% of projects. Collaborated with management to direct opportunities and strategies for pricing changes within national sales regions. Managed a portfolio of new and existing clients valued at over $6M. IT Solutions, San Francisco, CA 07/08 02/10 Help Desk Operator Handled customer services issues for the CA region, assisting up to 20 customers daily Managed a team of three student assistants to oversee ticket process to resolve issues promptly and correctly Directed a full review of ticketing process that resulted in a 25% improvement in response rate and customer satisfaction
EXPERIENCE SECTION: FOCUS ON RESULTS Think about goals accomplished which conclude in specific results, numbers when appropriate. ASK YOURSELF: Why is this important? What impact did it have for the company? What was the results of my actions? Who was involved? How? When? All of these questions and related answers strengthen bullet points. If at least one of these aren t answered, you are left with a task list or job description. Illustrated below in this general example: PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE Sample Insurance Corporation, San Francisco, CA 02/10 06/13 Pricing Analyst Created and revised financial projections annually, contributing to a 10% profitability margin in two years. Evaluated product rate positioning relative to financial projections, update pricing strategies, communicate updates and execute short term tactics, meeting or exceeding budget and timeline objectives in 95% of projects. 14 Building an MBA Résumé Summary Resumes are used for two main purposes; a marketing tool for you, and a screening tool for employers. There is a primary resume format for all students, as noted and laid out in the Wisconsin MBA Resume Guide. Beyond your primary resume, there are multiple ways to market yourself to employers.
