2 John R. Kasich, Governor John Born, Director Bureau of Motor Vehicles Emergency Management Agency Emergency Medical Services Office of Criminal Justice Services Ohio Homeland Security Ohio Investigative Unit Ohio State Highway Patrol 1970 West Broad Street P.O. Box Columbus, Ohio (614) October 15, 2013 The Ohio Department of Public Safety is pleased to present the 2012 Ohio Traffic Crash Facts Book, an indepth highway safety statistical profile and analysis compiled from data supplied by law enforcement agencies from across the state. This annual report provides a comprehensive look at the driving behaviors, facts and circumstances of traffic crashes on Ohio s roads. It is aimed to assist the Ohio Department of Public Safety, local law enforcement agencies and other public safety partners determine priorities and allocate resources to improve highway safety in Ohio. In 2012, the state recorded 287,050 total traffic crashes. Traffic deaths increased to 1,122 persons killed in 1,024 traffic crashes compared to 2011 when Ohio set a record low number of lives lost on our roadways with 1,015 persons killed in 941 crashes statewide. In 2012, alcohol impaired drivers were involved in nearly 42% of all fatalities and 550 motor vehicle occupants sustained fatal injuries in traffic crashes as a result of failing to wear available safety belts. Reducing the rate of alcohol involvement in fatal crashes and increasing voluntary safety belt usage in Ohio continues to be a significant focus of the Ohio Department of Public Safety. It is our hope that you will use these statistics to help educate, encourage and promote safe driving in our state. By working collaboratively and across disciplines, we will continue to make Ohio a safer place to live and travel. Sincerely, John Born, Director Ohio Department of Public Safety Mission Statement to save lives, reduce injuries and economic loss, to administer Ohio s motor vehicle laws and to preserve the safety and well being of all citizens with the most cost-effective and service-oriented methods available. An Equal Opportunity Employer
