3 WELCOME ADRESSES Dear Colleagues and Friends, More than 2000 registrations from participants all over the world had been received by the organisers of the X European Congress of Psychology in Prague already several months before the Congress. There is good reason to believe that we will witness a successful and lively event, scientifically, professionally and socially. On behalf of the European Federation of Psychologists Associations EFPA, I am glad to welcome you to the tenth European Congress of Psychology in Prague in July EFPA was founded in 1981 to promote co-operation within European psychology and to increase the influence of psychologists in Europe. Today, EFPA consists of the psychological associations of 32 European countries, with about 200,000 psychologists as individual members. The Congress is co-sponsored by the world psychology organisations IAAP (the International Association of Applied Psychology) and IUPsyS (the International Union of Psychological Science). The success and credibility of psychology as a profession relies greatly on the close link between scientific research and practical application. In addition to the scientific programme, numerous professional meetings and symposia will be held during the Congress. After the Congress EFPA will hold its General Assembly and most likely adopt the psychological associations of yet another two European countries to the EFPA family. Our Czech colleagues are doing their best to arrange an outstanding event in terms of the programme, the setting, and the facilities available. We are looking forward to seeing psychologists from all over Europe as well as from other parts of the world in Prague in July 3-6, Tuomo Tikkanen President, EFPA Ladies and Gentlemen, Dear Friends, Allow me to welcome you in one of the most beautiful cities of Europe and extend my best wishes of success towards the deliberations of the Xth European Congress of Psychology. the importance of psychology and its disciplines has been steadily growing along with the development of human society and integration of the world, so that it has now acquired, literally, a global significance. As psychiatrist, politician and mayor, I am well aware of how the outcome of any undertaking depends on the selection of collaborators, and, subsequently, on interpersonal relations and a favourable psychological atmosphere, felt in each team. Psychology, as interdisciplinary branch of science, is of great interest to me. As politician, I follow the development of political psychology; as mayor, all matters concerning the municipality from governing the city to particular social and psychological problems; and as psychiatrist, I cooperated at solving problems of drug addiction. I should like to express my sincere belief that you will gather not only valuable new information but also pleasant experience and memories of our city that has been awarded the honor to host your biennial Congress. Pavel Bem Mayor of Prague 3 Final program_def.indd , 20:36:37

4 WELCOME ADRESSES Dear colleagues and friends, It is my honour to invite you to spend several days in July, 2007 in Prague at the Xth European Congress of Psychology. Congresses, in general, are predictable with their programme and structure, further it is also possible to predict, and who will seek them out. Yet, such an event is something unique, either by its context or encounters and events, which take place. Thus, Congress can be an inspiration or can at least stimulate reflecting over what is the topic of our interest the knowledge and help to people. The psychological network of knowledge pertaining to individuals can appear fragmented. Thus, the Prague Congress aims to show how connected the different fields of our knowledge are and how important it is to realize this. Congress is a forum, where it is possible to show how varied routes we take in order to understand ourselves and people around us. It is a place of tolerance and plurality, and also of critical reflection of our work research and practice. the congress offers us the opportunity to meet during symposia, in workshops, at posters and during oral sessions. Our awareness of historical continuity of European psychology will be furthered by special historical presentation and exhibitions. In several sections we will hear other languages than the official English, which can be understood as strengthening of the multi-vocality of our meeting. Keynote speakers, outstanding scientists from all over the world, have brought topics that will attract your attention; moreover you can find what is behind the thoughts, which you know from the publications. We also cannot overlook the inspiring voice of young generation, which already forms the future face of European psychology. the importance of this young dimension is heightened by the Comenius Young European Psychologist Award, which will be presented during the Congress. I would like to thank the members of the Scientific committee for their work during the preparation of the Congress, to the National and International Advisory boards for careful evaluation of the abstracts, and to all Departments of Psychology of Universities in Czech Republic for their support, which is visible by the active participation of Czech psychologists. I am convinced that the genius loci of Prague in union with the concentration of intellect will keep your mind open during the entire Congress. Ivo Cermak, Chair of Scientific committee Dear colleagues, dear friends, On behalf of the Union of Psychologists Associations of the Czech Republic (UPA) and the Organizing Committee of ECP 2007, I am glad to welcome you in the Czech Republic and in its capital city, Prague. When UPA was admitted for member of the European Federation of Psychologists Associations (EFPA) as a representative of psychologists from the Czech Republic, it promised not to be a passive member of EFPA only, but with regard to the historical tradition of psychology on the territory of the Czech Republic to engage actively in the activities of the European psychologists. That is why psychologists from the Czech Republic are represented and actively operate in practically all Standing Committees, Task Forces, and Working Groups of EFPA. In order to enable a direct exchange of information among psychologists from the Czech Republic and Europe as well as from other parts of the world, we organized in 2001, in cooperation with the European Association of Work and Organizational Psychology (EAWOP), the European Congress of Psychology of Work and Organization. Subsequently, in the year 2005, we realized an International Psychological Congress on Economic Psychology in cooperation with the International Association for Research in Economic Psychology (IAREP). Apart from the new features mentioned by Professor Cermak (i.e., language sections, special exhibition History of Psychology, and Comenius European Young Psychologist Award ), the UPA wants to enrich the ECP 2007 by the latest information and communication technologies used in the work of psychologists. For that, we prepared special video-section (for presenting diagnostic as well as intervention and educational activities) and we expect the contribution from some users of psychological services in business activity area as well. We would like to thank for the auspices over the Xth European Congress of Psychology that was kindly accepted by Vaclav Klaus, president of the Czech Republic, as well as for the partnership and auspices of the capital Prague accepted by Lord Mayor of Prague, Pavel Bém. We also thank to all of our partners and last but not least to EC EFPA and all the national associations of EFPA for supporting the Xth ECP in Prague. Prague is the Capital city of the Czech state from its formation since the 9 th century. This location has been populated since the Stone Age due to its strategic position and mild climate. the heritage of the Celts lies in the name of the country Bohemia, as recorded by the Roman geographer Ptolemy. the rivers Moldau (Vltava) and Elbe (Labe) have also been named by the Celts. the Celts were then replaced by the Germanic tribes and after them, in the 5 th century, the Slavic tribes arrived. Among them were the Czechs, who built a state and its capital Prague. Prague enchants of all its visitors and for many people Prague is one of the most beautiful cities in the world. the city has preserved its uniqueness, which has developed during the centuries. the monuments of the Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque style, hundreds of spires, palaces, town houses, and fortification belong to the jewels of the European civilization (UNESCO List of World Cultural Values). the magnificent panorama of Charles Bridge, St. Nicholas Church and Prague Castle belong to the gems of the Prague experience. Further, Prague is also valued for its Art Nouveau and Cubism. Prague, the heart of Europe, has been always the intersection of cultural influences. Prague has these influences absorbed and at the same radiated and still radiates inspiration outward. No. 4 Royal Garden No. 6 Ball Game Hall Ball Game Hall In the years 1567 to 1569 the so-called Large Ball Game Hall originated on the southern side of the Royal Garden, immediately above the slope of Deer Moat. This Renaissance, richly decorated building has a dramatic history. until the 17 th century it served successively for ball games and as a riding school and a stable. During the reign of the Emperor Joseph II it was used as a military storehouse. In the 20 th century it was damaged by static defects and gunfire. It was burned to such an extent that only the peripheral walls remained of it. In 1952 its reconstruction was completed under the supervision of P. Janak, but the Ball Game Hall was concealed in the closed Royal Garden. It was made accessible to the public after 1989 and is now used mainly for exhibitions of creative art, concerts and important social events. Royal Garden Royal Garden was laid out in 1534 on the orders of the Habsburg Ferdinand I. From the owners he gradually bought old vineyards beyond the valley of the Brusnice stream and had a Renaissance garden laid out here, which later became famous for its rare botanical specimens and the exotic plants gained from distant countries. From the very beginning there were situated a number of buildings serving the entertainment of the nobility. the Ball Game Hall, the Royal Summer House, and the Lion Court. Currently the garden follows the tradition of an English-style park created in the mid 19 th century, but it also contains elements of Renaissance character (giardinetto near the Royal Summer House) as well as Baroque elements (ornamental flower beds). It can be approached via two entrances, the main (western) gate from the street U Prasneho mostu (By the Powder Bridge) and the east gate near the Royal Summer House. the northern gate from the street Marianske hradby (Marian Ramparts) is only open occasionally. 12 Final program_def.indd , 20:36:40

17 Justification of choosing a name of Comenius for the European Young Psychologist Award Comenius European Young Psychologist Award will be conferred for the first time at the Xth European Congress of Psychology in June 2007 in Prague. Onwards, this prestigious recognition will be a permanent component of every European Congress of Psychology in the future. 1. Comenius: his life and work Jan Amos Komensky Comenius ( ) was a Czech educator and teacher, theologist, philosopher, social and religious thinker and writer, diplomat, priest and the bishop of the Unity of Brethren, a political and religious refugee. Comenius was a determined advocate of universal education and he became known as the teacher of the nations. He was born in Moravia, today s Czech Republic, received education from prestigious protestant schools and universities, including Herborn and Heidelberg, and back in his home country devoted himself to professional work, research and writing. the scope of his knowledge and scholarly interest was exceptionally impressive. Comenius was author of a large number of works, in which he connected the domestic reformation traditions with European philosophical thinking and also addressed many practical issues related to education and present political problems (Labyrinth of the World and the Paradise of the Heart, Didactica Magna, Prodromus Pansophiae, Janua Linguarum Reserata, Orbis Pictus, De Rerum Humanorum Emendatione Consultatio Catholica, Schola Ludus, Informatorium skoly materske, Theatrum Universitatis Rerum and other). The strict re-catholisation made him one of the leaders of the protestant exile from the Czech lands during the tragic period of the 30-Year War. Comenius took refuge in Poland, Sweden, England and Netherlands. He continued his work in the field of philosophy and educational reforms and as well respected thinker he was engaged in the diplomatic arena in the last period of the 30-Year War. In the last years of his life Comenius lived in Amsterdam, Netherlands, where he died in Comenius and psychology Comenius was one of the first Europeans who contributed substantially to the knowledge of psychological aspects of learning and personality. Comenius anticipated our modern approaches of psychology and pedagogy. He understood learning as a large process that included besides knowledge and skills, also life experiences and formation of personality. Comenius also paid detailed attention to memory and the cognitive processes in learning. He stressed that reason, understanding and thinking, control and self-control play a major role in the learning process. Comenius emphasized the importance of good physical and psychological condition of students and analyzed in detail the process of attention and its functioning. As one of the first authors, he described how the emotions influence the learning process, how important is the proper motivation and what causes the lack of motivation. He put emphasis on active forms of learning in school and the role of homework. One of the most fundamental principles, as seen by Comenius, was harmonious and natural development of the student. He understood the learning as a natural component of development and in this respect; he approached very closely the psychology of 20 th Century. Comenius contributed profoundly to the studies of personality, even though he used the vocabulary of 17 th Century and thus spoke of soul or of a man. Here again, he stressed such qualities as harmony and integrity. According to the historians of psychology (Cap, 1992), Comenius was a predecessor of hierarchical models of personality as taught by contemporary psychology. His understanding of a man included both societal and biological aspect, similarly to present concepts of unity of societal and biological phenomenon. We can find even more of significant connections in the area of personality with our modern discipline. Just to name some of them. the natural motives listed by Comenius are very close to the contemporary category of needs, such as need to be active, need to learn, esthetical and moral needs etc. the lack of motivation of some children 17 Final program_def.indd , 20:36:42

18 is caused, according to Comenius, by negative influences of environment and education. Comenius was convinced that every child has to be highly valued and merits an appreciation and respect. Somatic and mental problems are according to him, the result of a bad treatment and bad influence of educators. A human being is by his/her nature inclined to be good and has natural tendency to learn. When speaking about education of children, Comenius stressed the future of a child, its goals and perspectives these views are very close to the concepts of many recent psychologists of 20 th Century, such as S. L. Rubinstein, V. E. Frankl, and J. Cap (Cap, 1992). The formation of the personality and its determination is, according to Comenius, a complex process that includes interaction of many internal and external factors, among which the dominant role has the education, good and bad examples of the society, and influences that are or are not adequate to the internal conditions of a child and to its actual development. the education should start from the early childhood. For Comenius, the interaction of a child with other children of the same age was very important. the same importance has the relationship between the children and adults parents, teachers, and educators. Comenius always advocated that the children have to be treated by their parents with love, respect, and trust, but at the same time attention has to be paid to the discipline and control of their work and duties. Comparison of ideas expressed in 17 th Century by Comenius shows a remarkable proximity with the present concepts, theories on learning and personality in the field of educational psychology. According to the historians of psychology, Comenius could be considered a predecessor of humanistic psychology. Work of Comenius documents the long humanistic traditions of European intellectual history and the long history of efforts for a better education and a better life of people. Sources used: Cap, J.
