1 Thursday 26th November 2015 Castellón (Spain) I INTERNATIONAL LEGIONELLA FAST DETECTION CONGRESS
2 WELCOME LETTER REGISTRATION & ACCOMODATION AGENDA - ONE DAY CONGRESS SPEAKERS PROFILES sponsor organizers collaborators
3 01 WELCOME LETTER Welcome to the First International Legionella Fast Detection Congress 2015 on Legionella rapid testing and water safety. Although for the foreseeable future there will always be a place for culture, well-known drawbacks of this gold standard are driving the incorporation of methods obtaining a faster result than the reference method. These fast methods can be used as standalone or supplementary to the gold standard. Alternative methods are gaining acceptance for the commissioning of risk facilities or when something has gone wrong, but also in point of use to supplement laboratory testing, outbreak/public health investigations and for routine testing. In this scenario, an understanding of the rapid assay will help you to interpret data. Do you understand what the test is telling you? Choosing a suitable test requires to answer a number of issues: validation? Peer-reviewed evidence? Sensitivity/specificity compared to reference method, Units? Will end user understand them? Suitable for your laboratory or need? Cost? Customers will have questions to ask to their testing laboratories: what does the test mean? What does the test measure? Manufacturer and lab validation? Is the test certified? does it meet regulatory testing requirements? Immuno-magnetic approaches can bring benefits such as same day results, viable only detection, good specificity, useful for complex matrices, can match sensitivity of culture method or even can be used up-front before culture/pcr to increase sensitivity. The end user must be able to interpret results correctly in order to take appropriate action and the laboratories should take an active role in ensuring the customer understands new tests, including limitations and what the results actually mean. The developers should overcome the difficult to explain scientific principles to non-scientists, helping to the building of customer confidence in rapid techniques. This first Congress is focusing on practical cases and real world best practice on water safety using rapid testing. Thanks to all our expert speakers who will be sharing success stories and tips to help you tackle the strategic and day-to-day challenges of prevention, risk assessment and treatment on the basis of a rapid testing. Speakers from Spain, Australia, Germany, UK and USA will be joining to us for a one-day comprehensive event. It is going to be a wonderful day of case studies, vital information, practical insight and networking. Thank you for attending and making today possible. I very much hope you enjoy the International Legionella Fast Detection Congress 2015! Best regards, Santiago V. Luis Dpt. of Inorganic and Organic Chemistry Supramolecular and Sustainable Chemistry Group University Jaume I
