1 Process for Nursing Research Proposal Review Nursing Student/Faculty Research Projects General guideline for all research: Nurses and other staff may not participate in studies conducted by external researchers during their work time or complete research work that requires increased clinical time unless the time required to participate is paid for by the research grant. Exceptions to this general guideline must be approved by Dr. Mary Tonges, Senior VP and Chief Nursing Officer, UNC Health Care System and Associate Dean for UNC Healthcare in the UNC-Chapel Hill School of Nursing. A. All nursing research projects (student research for any school project or Faculty research project) to be conducted at UNC Hospitals must be reviewed by the Nursing Research Council (NRC). B. The Preliminary Request for the Conduct of Research (attached) must be submitted to the NRC before the IRB application has been submitted to the Institutional Review Board. The purpose of this review is to inform the Division of Nursing of potential studies involving nurses/affecting nursing workload and to evaluate the feasibility of completing the study during the proposed time frame. i. The student and faculty member should prepare and submit the attached application prior to an upcoming NRC meeting. These meetings are held on the 2 nd Wednesday of the month, from 9-11 am. The proposal form is submitted electronically to the Chair of the NRC (currently Christopher McGrath, CMcGrath@unch.unc.edu) at least 2 weeks prior to the scheduled meeting. The student/faculty member will receive either an 'approval' or 'request for additional information' letter within one week of the NRC meeting. If a request for additional information addresses the questions/concerns raised, an approval letter will be sent. ii. If the student/faculty member requires NRC approval prior to the next scheduled NRC meeting, a sub-committee will review the electronic proposal and a response will be submitted within 5-7 business days. The reviewers will convene in person, by phone, or via to discuss their recommendations related to the proposal. Their recommendations will be summarized and shared with the NRC chairperson; the NRC chairperson will then share reviewers' feedback with the student/faculty member within 10 business days of the original submission. The student/faculty member will receive either an 'approval' or 'request for additional information' letter. Once the student/faculty member provides that information, an approval letter will be sent to her/him. C. After IRB approval has been obtained, the student/faculty member must submit the following forms to the chairperson of the NRC within one month: i. 1 complete copy of the IRB application. ii. 1 copy of the IRB approval letter. D. One copy of the Preliminary Request Form, the IRB proposal and the NRC letter will be maintained in the UNCH Nursing Research Notebook. E. A member of the NRC will be assigned to the student/faculty member as a resource person for the duration of the study. F. Once the proposal has been approved, the student/faculty member must submit in writing any changes in the study plans or timeline to the chair of the NRC. Changes in study plans are to be submitted to the NRC after the revised IRB application has been approved by the IRB. Changes in study timeline are to be submitted to the NRC as soon as possible after the changes are determined. G. The student/faculty member is required to provide a summary of the results of the study to the NRC and to participating unit(s)/staff. The summary will be kept in the pertinent

2 nursing research study file in the NRC Chairperson s office. A written summary is required and a presentation on the nursing unit(s) as a unit inservice, during departmental nursing meetings, or as a Nursing Grand Rounds offering is also recommended.
