1 24/7 INJURY TRIAGE & REPORTING
2 BENEFITS OF TRIAGE Employers nationwide are using Medcor s patented triage process to reduce workers compensation claims and costs while improving outcomes for injured employees. Even in the safest worksites, employees can get hurt, creating challenges and costs for everyone involved. Incidents are reported late and inconsistently. Supervisors face medical decisions they are not trained for. The medical, legal, and claims systems are complicated. As a result, employees with minor injuries are often sent for unnecessary and expensive off-site care when first aid would have been medically appropriate. Worse yet, employees with serious conditions sometimes do not get the care they need. Tens of thousands of worksites address these challenges by using Medcor s triage. Medcor s innovative triage process enables immediate response to injuries on any job. Employees and supervisors in any industry even mobile workers can call specially trained RNs who assess the injury and determine the best treatment following evidence-based medical protocols. This simple process resolves many cases with first aid alone, avoiding unnecessary claims. More serious cases are directed to appropriate care from in-network providers. Employers benefit by avoiding unnecessary claims and all their associated costs and fees, improving in-network utilization, shortening reporting lag-time, reducing litigation, transferring liability for decision-making, and improving service levels. Employees benefit from immediate medical attention and better health outcomes. Telephone triage is helping some employers reduce their workers compensation costs by eliminating unnecessary trips to hospital emergency rooms. Business Insurance Magazine INTEGRATES EASILY WITH EXISTING SYSTEMS Medcor s triage service is fully compatible with all TPAs, provider networks, brokers, and insurance plans. Employers do not need to change their existing systems to benefit from this service. Medcor s triage system will integrate smoothly with any intake, claims, or risk management system. AFFORDABLE & SELF-FUNDING Medcor s triage service costs as little as a few hundred dollars per year per location. This service is typically self-funding because the savings from claims reductions are much greater than the cost of the service. THE RIGHT TREATMENT, RIGHT AWAY The best treatment for any injured employee is not the most expensive or least expensive treatment, but, rather, the treatment that is medically appropriate to the type and severity of the injury. The faster injuries are assessed and treated, the better the outcomes for the employee and the company. Medcor s triage gives injured employees help within minutes. SETTING THE STANDARD Telephone triage is a pre-claim activity that is changing the way workers comp is handled nationwide. Medcor pioneered this service in 1997 and continues to set the standard for triage performance. Employers benefit from Medcor s unparalleled experience and reliability. Medcor provides the only triage service that is fully transparent, containing no conflicts of interest and gaining no revenue from referrals. Medcor s clinical algorithms are designed specifically for workplace injuries, updated regularly, and monitored by a continuous quality improvement process.
3 HOW MEDCOR S TRIAGE WORKS This service is very different from traditional claims reporting or telephone case management. Medcor s triage proactively guides employees at the time of the injury rather than just collecting data after the incident. 1. EASY TO USE When an injury occurs, the affected employee and the supervisor simply call Medcor s toll-free number at the moment of the incident. The call comes directly into Medcor s state-of-the-art call center, available 24/7. 2. PROFESSIONAL SERVICE Medcor s call center is staffed by Registered Nurses specially trained in workplace injury triage. They use proprietary triage algorithms developed by Medcor s team of doctors and nurses, experienced in occupational health and emergency medicine. The operation is overseen by a full-time physician who is board certified in emergency and internal medicine. 3. DECISIVE & DEPENDABLE PROCESS When an injury call is received, the triage nurse speaks with the supervisor and the injured employee. If language is a barrier, a translator joins the call. The nurse gathers information about the incident, injury, symptoms, and the worksite. Using sophisticated software, the nurse assesses the injury. The nurse then recommends a treatment that is medically appropriate for the specific case. Typical calls last minutes. If the injury is minor and does not require off-site care, the nurse provides injury-specific first aid instructions, and the employee may return to work. When the employee needs off-site care, the nurse makes a referral recommendation. The employer s preferred providers are pre-loaded into Medcor s system, which successfully guides employees in network. The nurse takes time to answer the employee s questions and make sure the employee is comfortable with the recommendations. Once the appropriate medical care is determined, the nurse collects OSHA reporting and client-customized data to document the incident. Finally, the nurse closes the call with the supervisor, explaining the treatment and process. Employees can call back anytime their symptoms change or if they have additional questions about their injuries at no extra charge. 4. RAPID REPORTING After each call, Medcor s software automatically sends detailed reports, customized for each client. Within minutes, all incidents are reported to safety, HR, claims, and risk management staff as directed by the client. Case managers and adjusters learn about new claims in time to be proactive, safety managers are alerted to start investigations, and first reports of injury can be handled for all 50 states. When referrals are made, providers are notified in advance to ensure coordination of care and to emphasize the company s return-to-work policy. Clients can access their data enterprise-wide over a secure website to analyze trends. Medcor s triage system protects the privacy of personal medical information.
4 INDUSTRIES SERVED A wide range of industries use Medcor s services: Aerospace Agriculture Insurance Brokers, Carriers, Captives, Pools & Groups EXPERIENCE Medcor has more triage experience than any other provider, with more than a decade of uninterrupted service. Medcor works in urban and rural areas, serving large and small organizations, meeting the needs of employers and employees nationwide. INNOVATION & LEADERSHIP Medcor pioneered triage in an industry that thrives on claim volume. After opposing triage for many years, some TPAs, MCOs, and network providers are starting to follow Medcor s lead. Medcor s triage remains unsurpassed in service and results. Medcor has developed protocols, software, and operating methods that are the best practices. SATISFIED CUSTOMERS Medcor s client renewal exceeds 98%. Clients report sustained reductions in workers compensation claims and costs. Clients calculate high ROIs. Injured workers report high levels of satisfaction. TRANSPARENCY & INDEPENDENCE Medcor s services are transparent, portable, and free from conflicts of interest. Medcor does not share any revenue with provider networks or benefit from referrals (unlike TPAs who provide triage and generate revenue from claims). This independence ensures Medcor s incentives are aligned with clients goals. This independence also allows Medcor to work cooperatively with any designated networks.
