STUDENT SENATE OF CHABOT COLLEGE SPONSORED SCHOLARSHIPS Students may apply for more than one scholarship but may only receive one SSCC scholarship. Scholarship checks will be made out to the recipients but sent to the Financial Aid or Admissions and Records office for pick up. If you have received a Student Senate sponsored scholarship before, preference will be given to new applicants. 2 Endowed and Community Based Scholarships OSHER SCHOLARSHIPS - $1,000 EACH Must be a Chabot College student, with 24 degree applicable units by the beginning of the Fall 2014 semester. Must be eligible to receive the Board of Governors (BOG) Fee Waiver for the Must have applied for a FAFSA or the CA Dream Act application for the school year and demonstrate financial need. Please visit to apply for financial aid if you have not already done so. Student must meet Financial Aid Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) standards, with minimum 2.00 cumulative GPA Must be enrolled in at least 6 units during all terms in which the award remains active. Disbursement of award will take place at the beginning of the semester when enrollment status and SAP are reviewed. Award is non-transferable (can only be used for enrollment while at Chabot College). Awards will be adjusted based on enrolled status: Full-time (12 or more units per term) = up to $500/semester. Three-quarter-time ( units per term) = up to $375/semester. Half-time ( units per term) = up to $250/semester Disbursement of award will take place at the beginning of the semester when enrollment status and SAP are reviewed. FRESH & NATURAL $500 This scholarship is to recognize two students who will be transferring to a 4-year college, who have exhibited leadership and a commitment to volunteerism in college or community activities. A $500 check will be sent to the institution the student is transferring to, to be credited to the student s financial account. Applicants must be a student in good standing, have a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.0, completed 12 units or more at Chabot College and completed all steps under Scholarship Application. 3. A complete list of your extracurricular activities, and estimated service hours for each extracurricular activity, or a resume 4. Please submit a typed personal statement of at least 700 words, but no longer than 1,000 words. BOOK STORE SCHOLARSHIP: - $500 & $500 STORE CREDIT This scholarship is to recognize 20 continuing student, who have exhibited leadership and a commitment to volunteerism in college or community activities. Applicants must be a student in good standing, have a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.0, completed 12 units or more at Chabot College 5. 3 MARYLOU CISNEROS MEMORIAL VETERANS SCHOLARSHIP $500 Applicant minimum requirements: This scholarship was created to honor the memory of MaryLou Cisneros, Chabot College Veterans Specialist. The purpose of the fund is to help a veteran or active member from a branch of the United States Armed Forces continue their educational pursuits. This scholarship application will be distributed with the Chabot College ASCC Scholarship packet in the Spring and will adhere to their deadline dates and criteria for submission. The $500 scholarship will be awarded at the Chabot College Annual scholarship Awards Ceremony in May. Honorably discharged veteran or active member of the U.S. Armed Forces Minimum GPA of 2.50 Currently enrolled in at least 6 units at Chabot College at the time of the application Completed at least 12 units at Chabot College Have never received this award in the past Items to include with scholarship packet: 1. Application through the Chabot College scholarship packet 2. Two letters of recommendation (typed or word processed) 3. Essay highlighting career goals and extracurricular/community activities MELINDA MATSUDA SCHOLARSHIPS EOPS AWARD(S) - $ EACH The purpose of this scholarship is to recognize two EOPS students who are first generation college students who have overcome life s obstacles to accomplish their educational goals. Applicants must be current EOPS students in good standing, have a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 2.5 or better, completed 12 units or more at Chabot College and completed all steps in application process. One scholarship will be given to a student who is graduating and/or transferring and another to a continuing student. Provide one letter of recommendation written by an instructor, counselor, Chabot staff, clergy, supervisor or mentor. Melinda Matsuda Award Essay Questions: 1. How has EOPS and/or CARE helped you achieve your educational goals? 2. What obstacles have you had to overcome to reach your goal(s)? 3. Please list any extracurricular and/or community service activities. 4. What can you add about yourself that would assist the committee in choosing you for this scholarship? STRIVING BLACK BROTHERS COALITION AWARD(S) $ The purpose of this scholarship is to recognize two Striving Black Brothers who have overcome the odds to accomplish their educational goals. Applicants must be current SBBC students in good standing, have a Fall semester grade point average (GPA) of 2.5 or better, completed 12 units or more at Chabot College and completed all steps in application process. One scholarship will be given to a student who is graduating and/or transferring and another to a continuing student. Provide one letter of recommendation written by an instructor, counselor, Chabot staff, clergy, supervisor or mentor. SBBC Award Essay Questions: 1. How has Striving Black Brothers helped you achieve your educational goals? 2. What obstacles have you had to overcome to reach your goal(s)? 3. 4 ZERMEÑO FAMILY SCHOLARSHIP- $500 The purpose of this scholarship is to recognize a Latina student who is committed to the community, to education and to family. This scholarship remembers Maria del Rocío Zermeño Cárdenas, who went from a ten-year old poor Mexican immigrant in 1964, to one of the Women of the Year in Salinas, California in She was the sister of J. Francisco Zermeño C., profesor de español en Chabot College. The Zermeño family believes in and maintains a true commitment to community, education and family. For transferring students, a $500 check will be sent to the institution the student is transferring to, to be credited to the student s financial account. Continuing Chabot Students will receive a $250 Chabot College Bookstore gift card for textbook purchases at the Bookstore and $250 credit to your Chabot account. (If you have a BOG fee waiver you will receive a check instead of a credit to your account.) Applicants must be a PUENTE participant in good standing, have a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 or better, completed 12 units or more at Chabot College and completed all steps under Procedures for Application. Zermeño Family Scholarship Essay Questions: 1. How does your experience in high school and at Chabot College reflect a personal interest in community, education and family? 2. In your opinion, how are community, education and family related? 3. How are community, education and family related to your personal and professional goals? 4. How would you help a Latina student be successful? CHABOT COLLEGE CLASSIFIED SENATE SCHOLARSHIP AWARD $500 This award, in this amount of $500, is to acknowledge the work and contribution made by student assistants at Chabot College. Only currently working student assistants may apply. Criteria requirements: Minimum of 2.5 GPA Currently working as student assistant on campus Two reference letters; one from the person for whom you work, one from a person of your choice. Chabot College Classified Senate Scholarship Additional Essay: 1. What working at Chabot College means to me, and what I have learned from this work experience. CHICANO-LATINO EDUCATION ASSOCIATION (CLEA) SCHOLARSHIP $300 & The Chicano/Latino Education Association (CLEA) of the Chabot-Las Positas Community College District is pleased to announce the availability of the 2014/2015 scholarship for continuing and or transfer students. The scholarship is funded through fundraising efforts by CLEA. For the 2014/2015 academic year, CLEA will be awarding three $300 scholarships to continuing students and one $500 scholarship to a transferring student. Requirements 1) The scholarship application will be evaluated on the following criteria, in order of importance: a) Financial Need b) Scholastic Record c) Two completed essays d) Community involvement 2) Applicants must be entering and or continuing students at Chabot College in Hayward, California or Las Positas College in Livermore. 3) Community college and transfer scholarship recipients must take at least six units/credits for the fall semester/quarter of 2014/2015. This scholarship is to recognize 2 students, who have exhibited leadership and a commitment to volunteerism in college or community activities. Applicants must be a student in good standing, have a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.0, completed 12 units or more at Chabot College. 7.
