Using IP Networks for voice and video: benefits and challenges Peter Cox CEO UM Labs Ltd October 2010
About UM Labs UK Based company Founded 2008 by Peter Cox and other cofounders of Borderware Technologies Developers of the SIP Security Controller, providing service enablement and security for SIP network interconnections
Introducing VoIP Voice over IP provides: Voice telephony Video conferencing Instant Messaging Presence Over an IP Network Lays the foundation for Unified Messaging and Unified Communication
VoIP Protocols
Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) SIP has won the standards race, used by: All major telephony vendors (Avaya, Cisco, Siemens and others) SIP Trunk providers Telcos (Germany and Netherlands have announced place to replace ISDN with SIP) Skype (link to SIP networks via Skype for SIP)
How does SIP Differ from other telephony services Service presentation: SIP delivered over any IP connection Single connection to corporate PBX can support any number of calls More flexible, faster service delivery, easier capacity upgrades, better for variable demand SIP can deliver service anywhere... Standard PBX IP PBX Primary rate ISDN (30 channels) Basic rate ISDN (2 channels) IP link, shared or dedicated any number of channels
SIP Trunk Services SIP trunks deliver VoIP services over IP links Any IP link can be used DSL High capacity fibre Ethernet to premises MPLS Replace standard ISDN Calls routed over IP to trunk provider Calls dialled as normal Any country, any area code Trunk Provider IP Link PSTN Other trunk providers IP PBX
SIP and remote connections SIP delivers telephony (and video, IM, presence etc) to anywhere with an IP connection Home workers Mobile workers SIP delivers service to a range of devices Hardware SIP phones Softphones on laptops Mobile devices, Nokia, iphone, ipad Common service delivery to remote and office based users Mobile user (global roaming) Home Worker IP PBX Roaming User
SIP Benefits Flexibility Easy to add capacity (ideal for seasonal fluctuations) Easy to handle moves and changes Disaster recovery Geographical independence, you can have a number anywhere Remote Services Remote users, home workers, mobile users Other services Links to skype Cost SIP trunk call rates lower than telco rates skype:um-labs.com VoIP on mobile networks or via WiFi saves on cellular network roaming charges
Challenges: Why is SIP not used by everyone (yet!) New technology, but adoption rates are growing Interoperabilty, SIP is a standard with many options Service delivery, SIP protocols are complex, Firewalls are a barrier Security, VoIP exposes phone systems to new risks
Interoperability SIP s complexity means it has not reached the plug and play status of Interoperability issues affect: PBX to SIP trunk links Interoffice links (different PBX vendors) Remote user links Problems range from does not work to service limitations
Interoperability example: Impact BBDO Avaya PBX Dubai 3Com PBX Abu Dhabi Dubai users can call any Abu Dhabi extension Abu Dhabi users can call only one extension in Dubai
Service Delivery SIP is not directly compatible with Network address translating gateways All firewalls, many WiFi hot spots and DSL routers implement NAT SIP calls use dynamic ports (2 for each call, for media carried by RTP) Allowing SIP through a standard firewall can compromise its security Phone PBX Firewall SIP RTP RTP SIP
Security VoIP systems are exposed to two groups of threats Standard IP Security Threats, common to all IP applications Application specific threats, toll fraud, call hijacking, VoIP spam and others Attackers are scanning the Internet for active VoIP systems Downloadable application available
Brute Force Sequential Scan Thu Jan 14 06:49: bytes received from :5205 via udp task[13300] REGISTER SIP/2.0 Via: SIP/2.0/UDP :5205;branch=z9hG4bK ;rport Content-Length: 0 From: "6631"<sip:6631@ >; tag= Accept: application/sdp User-Agent: friendly-scanner To: "6631"<sip:6631@ > Contact: sip:6631@ CSeq: 1 REGISTER Call-ID: Max-Forwards: 70
Threats have a high potential cost VoIP toll fraud attack racks up a $82K bill in two days A recent report from the Australian press relates the story of a Perth company where hackers made 11,000 calls via the company s VoIP running up a bill of AU$ 120,000 ($82,500). This figure ranks this incident among the most expensive of documented toll-fraud attacks. INVITE of death, does this spell doom for VoIP? The last couple of weeks have seen two significant VoIP vulnerability reports. The second vulnerability, with the comparatively mundane name of SIP Digest authentication relay attack, is technically much more complex. An attacker could use this technique to make calls via a commercial service provider at the victim s expense.
Further Information on VoIP Security Threats
Overcoming the challenges and gaining the benefits The UM Labs SIP Security Controller is designed to: Protect SIP networks from attack, both generic IP threats and VoIP specific threats Allow SIP into your network without compromising data security Overcome interoperability challenges Simplify the connection of remote users Provide additional services, including call encryption for remote and mobile users
Deploying the SIP Security Controller SIP Security Controller protects SIP network interconnects Avoids routing SIP through a standard firewall Single controller will protect Trunk connections Remote office connections Remote and roaming users (with optional call encryption) Home Worker Mobile user (global roaming) Roaming User SIP Security Controller Trunk Provider Avaya ACM
Case Study: nfon, hosted PBX nfon AG provide hosted PBX services from their Munich Data Centre Target market is German corporate users Phones deployed in user premises, linked to remote PBX (via DSL links) Call encryption to protect privacy Retail outlet nfon Data Centre Secure, Encrypted VoIP SIP Security Controller Branch Office PBX & Phones
Case Study: Office Interconnect Avaya PBX Dubai SIP Security Controller 3Com PBX Abu Dhabi SIP Security Controller SIP Security controllers solve the Interoperability problem, user now has bi-directional calls from all extensions Add additional security
Case Study: Call Centre with high availability UM Labs secure SIP trunk connections for a mobile operator call centre Full redundancy with SIP Security controller cluster and Ethernet cross connects Trunk Provider Router Router SIP Security Controller SIP Security Controller Avaya ACM/ Session Manager Avaya ACM/ Session Manager
Case Study: Cell phone call encryption UM Labs has developed secure VoIP clients for Symbian (Noikia) and iphone handsets Enables encrypted calls over EDGE and 3G data channels and via WiFi Avoids risk of local network operator monitoring calls Targeted at Government, Defence, Finance and other sensitive sectors Cell-phone user (global roaming) Encrypted Calls Over fixed and mobile networks Head Office SIP Security Controller Roaming User PBX & Phones
Summary SIP based VoIP systems offer significant benefits Flexibility New services Cost savings To gain these benefits must first overcome the challenges Service enablement and interoperability Security A SIP Security Controller from UM Labs provides a simple solution to the challenges
