Students will learn how information is transmitted, how errors in transmission are removed, how data frames are routed in a network, how transmission flow control is achieved, and what services are provided by standard TCP/IP networks from the application viewpoint. By the end of this course, students should know understand how data communications operate and should be able to design a basic computer network. Contact: Professor: Raymond P. 3 Course Conduct: Grades: Attendance: Withdrawal: Homework: Grades will be assigned as follows: Examinations and formal reports 80% Homework 20% Lecture attendance will be required unless absence is excused. Students are expected to contact the professor regarding any absence and to obtain any missing notes from classroom colleagues. Students are assumed to be registered for the course unless/until the professor is notified otherwise. The date of such notification will be taken as the last date of class attendance. Assigned homework problems and reports must be submitted on time. Students may consult with each other on homework assignments, but submitted work must be individual unless otherwise indicated. Common efforts must be acknowledged where appropriate. Note: Quality of associated writing may affect homework grades. Design/Project Reports: Students may work together in teams but must submit their own written reports, even if data and graphs are identical, unless otherwise indicated. Reference to common work must be made where appropriate. Examinations: Students are expected to complete examinations without consulting any other student(s). Students are specifically reminded of the Widener University Student Handbook section on Academic Policy Procedures and Regulations.
4 Course Goals: (1) Students should understand the goals and limitations of data communication networks in their historical and societal context. (2) Students should understand the topology of typical network designs and should be able to propose meaningful structures for basic data networks. (3) Students should understand the physical and electrical characteristics of data communication networks and be able to perform basic measurements necessary to observe their electrical operation. (4) Students should understand how data frames are assembled and transmitted in a network and how transmission errors are detected and corrected. (5) Students should understand how data frames are routed to their network destinations in a typical network using Internet Protocol (IP). (6) Students should understand how end-to-end data transport is controlled by the Transport Control Protocol (TCP). (7) Students should understand the services provided to the user by the application layer. (8) Students should be able to design and analyze a basic digital communication network. (9) Students should develop an understanding of the effect of rapid technological progress on contemporary network designs and operations.
5 Student Outcomes: The Electrical Engineering program has a set of defined Program Educational Outcomes (PEO) that apply to this course.
